The reverse is true, too. I dated someone who would get incredibly wound up at the absolute injustice of Britney Spears's conservatorship. And like, yeah, not awesome, but these are celebrities, investing oneself in this stuff seems to be invariably, personally toxic.

Also, weird voyeur reality TV. I didn't break up with my last relationship because she really liked Intervention, but I probably should've realized it was a bigger red flag a lot sooner

Koichi Sakamoto, who worked as a second unit stunt director on Power Rangers in the 2000s, went back to Japan and went totally nuts with it in the 2010s and started doing really great fight choreo on Rider and Ultraman. Kamen Rider Fourze and Ultraman Geed are really good shows in general that also have Sakamoto directing the action throughout and it's really ambitious, fun, and characterful.

Ultraman in general has been really good for a while with the exception of the most recent series, Trigger. Ultraman Z is just excellent television and everyone should watch it. It has free official subs on YouTube!

I had sort of the reverse when I started watching Sentai after PR. PR sort of conditioned me to expect out of suit fighting too which Sentai doesn't really do. Not even to knock around the villain's mooks a little.

Both interesting points! I didn't know that Sentai or Kamen Rider was a thing when I was willing to give a random Power Rangers episode a shot honestly.

I didn't realize I was watching anime at the time at all, watching three episodes of Pokemon a day. If it was on Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon or Disney Channel, I assumed it was a cartoon. Anything animated was just assumed to be a cartoon.

"Johnny Depp is an actor I like who is in movies I like" is about where the critical thinking stops when it comes to this trial

The bigger-picture takeaway for me is the loss of any pretense of new individual creators approaching content as something they made out of their own interest and not a vein of ore to be tapped because it's there.

Like even five years ago it was individuals trying to pull the curtain off of content mills and hoping to support people who actually cared about what they created. Now it seems to be "if you can beat 'em, join 'em" and starting with bait content from the start.

(and yes, this is the fault of platforms for giving an unlevel playing field to unsustainable levels of content needed to live on)

sex negativity and all isn't new but it is kinda wild to see multiple takes of 'if someone at any point has bad sex it means the writer literally supports it'.

Like, I just got off Tiktok watching multiple fetuses say the creator of Naruto is a creep because he 'sexualized Naruto' by aging him up and having him get married and have a kid with his wife, ergo making you think that he had sex, ergo sexualizing a child' and I just kinda don't even know what I'm doing any more

I mean, yea, all this is just stupid people being stupid, none of these perverts can actually DO anything but just ~the discourse~ is exhausting.

Plus it leads to genuinely hosed up stuff like the whole 'leather at Pride is literal grooming' which is just a bunch of GSA baby queers genuinely repeating Pat Robertson level hatespeech but somehow thinking it's woke.

There's been rumblings the sudden arrival of "everything is oversexualized" meme dump right before Pride month has the same intentions as last year's "keep kink out of pride" meme dump; a coincidental jump in prudishness that will also just as suddenly vanish.

Nah, this is kind of a constant in fandoms. There's a lot of people who aren't comfortable with sexuality, and/or people who want a reason to say that someone who likes a show/character/pairing they dislike is actually morally bad.

I think I saw it in the round of discourse last week, but it's also extra tiring because they're being sore winners. Congrats. For various reasons, movies and the majority of TV shows are pretty sexless now. I haven't watched either but I guess you have Euphoria and Bridgerton? But there aren't really any psychosexual thrillers, passionate romances, not a lot of horny comedies, etc. And people are still complaining and acting like it's Skinemax 24/7.

People still point to the scene in Taxi Driver where Martin Scorsese plays a character who says the n-word as proof that he's racist even though he a.) didn't write the movie and b.) was only in that scene as a last minute replacement for an actor who couldn't make the shoot

Whenever this topic comes up in discussion (not specifically here, just in general), it makes me think that we're going backwards somehow. In the last sixty-some years, there's been pushback against the conservative attitudes regarding sex in media. It's like, "We did it! We made sex and nudity acceptable to show in film because uptight conservatives thought it was bad! Now let's resolve to never actually do it, because we also find it bad!" I just don't get it. :psyduck:

It's just generations with different attitudes and lives. Previously, the patriarchal issues were heavily based around "Women need to be chaste so they will make good wives"

Now, it's more "Women need to be hot and sexually available to my boner" so the people who grew up with the benefit of a culture where the former war has largely been won are much more troubled by the latter one, because it's more relevant to their lives.

(I expect it's probably also a side effect of a lot more people being online and in contact with one another- more people who have had bad experiences with sexuality or otherwise want nothing to do with it have the ability to yell about it and actually be heard.)

I also think that there's a difference between the fandom discussions- which seems to be what most people are talking about- and what media companies decide to make. The lack of sex stuff in mass media (at least in my view) probably has more to do with conservative foreign markets than what a bunch of sex-negative fans are saying.

For younger folks I can kinda understand it.

You're leaving your teens, your world is expanding rapidly and your brain is firing off with all that energy seeing connections that are new to you but you don't have that experience/self-awareness to give your own ideas a good critical evaluation. I'm sure most people, myself included, have had that phase in their life.

And some people will never get past that.
