Paraphrasing what I said in the cursed thread: :goonsay: warning

tl;dr-- I don't recommend it but if you're of a certain age and already have the means, it's a drat curious artifact. Insanely dark.

Basically it's everything about the Millennial Nostalgia Marketing Engine that gave rise to some of the most mediocre Marvel movies ever in the last few years, Ready Player One, and anything Lord and Miller ever touched.... but gone on such autopilot and with such little oversight that it accidentally ends up one of the darkest things Disney has ever made by a wide margin.

Like on the surface level it's a generic 21 Jump Street-alike along with being a lowkey official Roger Rabbit sequel, and all the performers are seasoned pros so it works in all the important ways. Mulaney and Samberg are funny enough, the plot knows what it's about and doesn't overcomplicate, the references are an appropriate mix of deep cuts and self-awareness, there's no real pretentiousness to it, and because Larry Fong is the Director of Photography everything is frighteningly good-looking. Really the worst thing you can say about it superficially is that the fact that it's the Rescue Rangers is kind-of arbitrary and while there's references galore it's a very pragmatic use of the property. If nothing else it's way better than Ready Player One and Space Jam 2, so like, it's a win there?

But the more you know about the style of movie, all its influences, and even what the actors were doing during production, the more the metatext just kind-of makes the whole thing hideously hideously dark in a way I don't even think the movie understands. You've already seen all the stupid Ugly Sonic stuff getting thrown around online because Disney is loving determined to use every part of that carcass, but like... that's just the surface level of weird metatextual incest on display.

The whole thing feels like the "darker, more twisted" version of the script we normally hear about after release, that accidentally got made because COVID threw production timetables out of whack and this was clearly easy to make on the quick with limited actors and sets during quarantine.

And maybe it won't read that way to you, but like if you can catch an older Bobby Driscoll-looking Peter Pan with the voice of Bojack Horseman exuding the evils of ripping off Disney IP drawing a clear and explicit analogy that says doing so is as bad as human trafficking while Samberg does tired reruns of rejected Brooklyn 99 bits and Mulaney does his nice guy schtick that he likely filmed while at the height of his coke/rehab stage... in a movie where the backdrop is an explicit sequel to Roger Rabbit's "Hollywood is a gaudy desert nightmare" aesthetic full of desperate has-beens who refuse to move on from the past except in the most superficial ways... Like yeah it's dark-dark in a way that casually reveals every adolescent attempt to be dark and mature like Dune or The Batman as an absolute loving poser. It is an immensely honest and bracing dark mirror of everything going on with the entertainment circuit circa 2018-2022 and it's a bit of a hard watch as a result.

That doesn't make it bad, it's just like... this is a movie that's banking on audiences who "know" to love it, and the more you know the more twisted it becomes. It's never awful but it is going to be a drat curious artifact of these times.

Very weird for me that mulaney is in my news feed twice today, one for being in a movie where people are mad because a bug married a rat, the other for doing a standup where he invited Dave Chapelle to do his opening act where the latter threw a ton of transphobia at the audience then gets a hug from the former

I'm mildly confused about this Rescue Rangers thing because in the original series wasn't the fly just, like, the mascot? At least I don't remember him being able to talk.

I don't give a poo poo what they do with the IP or whatever, but that's just a really weird choice.

The Chappelle set was extremely awkward. He rambled about Chris Rock for a few minutes, made the only joke transphobes have (something about being afraid that someone had a knife which identified as a gun), tried it again slightly reworded to even less engagement from the crowd, talked about some teenage twins in the audience masturbating, then told a few softball stories about how much he loves Ohio (I assume to try to win the crowd back). No one was really sure whether Mulaney or Netflix (which is in charge of the tour) invited him onstage, but the hug is a disappointing implication that Mulaney was cool with it.

He couldn’t be an IoSM because everyone’s phones were in those stupid locked bags.
