A certain kind of comedy is basically a sermon (lookin at you Nanette) and apparently this has convinced Dave Chappelle he's a priest

ok not really but I do think this is an ego thing, it is with all older famous comedians who suddenly find that there is a limit to what they're allowed to say and estimate this to be the greatest injustice of all time

It's more like, people need to be reminded how limited their powers is to make something popular, when it has Hollywood, and huge marketing machines behind it.

But nobody has really studied how big the internet entertainment machine is. My folks saw a commercial for that DnD cartoon based on Critical Role.
And I will not be surprised if in 3 years they are telling me about Dungeons and Dragons while watching a live play of DnD.

(Note, I accidentally stopped watching tv/radio and film in 2003 and to my family I basically plead stupidity to any and all pop culture. It's actually really helpful because you see how popular stuff with people who are not plugged in. Especially when they explain it to you. )

Eh, there are certain people whose careers you could reliably say were "made" by self-identified Tumblr queers; these are generally much smaller and humbler careers along the lines of the Homestuck guy or the McElroy brothers. John Mulaney is not one of these people.

Yea yea yea. John Mulaney's fame is not because of tumblr. Maybe internet as a whole? Maybe the internet help him to be the voice of Spiderman? But he probably would have gotten something else.

John Mulaney may have gotten to do a pilot of a TV show which didn't get picked up because it sucked; the McElroys got an entire (short) season of TV made! On a small streaming network which immediately went out of business and whose name I have forgotten. That's what internet-only fame gets you

He started his career as being a writer for SNL. I'm sure that the internet helped promote him in some way, but being in that type of space gives you so much more access than the internet.

The general theme of comedian speech being sacrosanct and beyond any critical examination is still there though; the degree is different but with that in the background I'm not really too surprised he ended up being sympathetic to Chappelle

Right, that was it. I think they had the mbmbam show, the Cyanide & Happiness show, and Harmonquest as their flagships

Of those, only Harmonquest had any real institutional notoriety behind it but actually watching it was a lot like a mediocre podcast with animation stapled on top of it; I didn't get the sense Harmon really gave poo poo one about it as a project

e: check this poo poo out https://nypost.com/2001/11/09/krolls-firm-on-a-roll-in-hunt-for-terrorist/

quote:

Some investors are getting a buzz from the posse of private sleuths eyeing the money trail of Osama bin Laden and his cohorts.

Kroll Inc., the security firm known as Wall Street’s private eye, is on the inside track to get more retainers to help President Bush’s attack on the money stream of international terrorists.

Kroll already has worked on government retainer to delve into the finances of Saddam Hussein, which has provided a rich data base about bad guys with bucks.

The government and Kroll had no comment on how many private operators are involved in the global initiative on terrorist financing.

Among Kroll’s investigators and forensic accountants are former operatives of the CIA and FBI who are familiar with Mideast and terror groups.

Even the NYPD’s top cops, such as former commissioner William Bratton, are beating the eco-political bushes for skullduggery.

Investors went on a buying spree yesterday for Kroll shares on rumors of its growing role in the money-trail crackdown.

The company, whose chairman is Jules Kroll, has seen its shares jump 227 percent since the Sept. 11 terrorist attack.

Kroll shares rose another 32 cents to 16.42 on volume of 451 million shares, more than double the usual volume.

Some of the buying was also related to yesterday’s inaugural trading of Kroll’s put and call options on the Philadelphia Stock Exchange.

Kroll’s new CEO, Michael Cherkasky, has been on the talk-show circuit in recent weeks, giving the chilling ins and outs of the terrorist business.

Cherkasky, a former head prosecutor for the Manhattan District Attorney, was the role model for “Law and Order” star Sam Waterson’s portrayal of his prosecutor character.

Cherkasky has been at the helm of Kroll for six months as it reorganizes from a disastrous merger two years ago with armored car maker O’Gara-Hess.

Kroll shed non-core assets, changed its name back to Kroll Inc. and focused its operations on specialized skills such as finding hidden assets, a growing concern among governments and corporations.

Kroll is adding about 100 new specialists to its 1,500-member payroll in the coming months to handle new projects, the company said. It declined to discuss the projects.

Sure, I'm just explaining why people might have build up that image of him. Or at least why something that should obviously tell you that's not him might not have mattered, because the people who came to identify themselves as his fanbase did not care about the thing that showed him for who he was back then. If he had made a point about how you weren't allowed to make a joke about the queers I feel like he might not have cultivated that fanbase.
