cars = freedom

that is why i'm paying off my third purely bureaucratic license suspension motherFUCKERS. obviously every issue should involve the courts and the DMV and they must not talk to each other

I just have to survive the summer in Florida and then I go carless in Philly.

SEPTA is alright. I like the trolleys. It's always struggled with funding. It seemed like the pinnacle of public transportation after growing up in Texas, where there is none.

Even though Philly has little to no bike infrastructure, it has a lot of bicyclists. Also a ton of martial arts gyms. Most of the city was fairly safe to ride through and I didn't fear brutal car death as I do in the south. I think it's because people tend to drive slower on narrower city streets with street parking.

Three warnings on biking in Philly.
#1. Get a U-lock. Bike theft is common. Thieves will cut through chains. I think you can register your bike serial number with the police.
#2. Don't ride next to parked cars. You'll be doored by a driver leaving their vehicle.
#3. Trolley tracks are the perfect size for a bicycle tire to be jammed in. Be very careful about riding parallel to those tracks. Always cross them perpendicularly.

Got a chance to ride out for a sail to a local island this morning. It was a total blast but also about as exhausting as you would think. Pulling that boat up a hill is no joke. That said, the trailer design worked out really well and modest hills were strenuous but doable. I just had to be mindful about route planning.

I definitely attracted a lot of attention on the road and at the marina and at least one person was filming so it might end up on a boat ramp fails compilation. A number of folks came up to chat which was a great opportunity to put in their mind the possibilities that exists for car alternatives. I have been know to seek attention so the stares and comment were pretty fun.

The next phase is going to involve a folding bike that I can put in the boat and somehow integrating the trailer into the boat or figuring out how to stow the trailer.

A ton of cars right now have a shitload of negative equity on them, too. The average car loan length has shot up enormously over the last decade (it's nearly 6 years now; to be clear, that's the *average*, most common loan lengths are 72 and 84 months), and the average payment has shot up over the last few years. It's a bubble that probably should've popped awhile ago, but if we go into recession, it's probably going to poo poo the bed.

yeah but no if about it, we're diving head-first into a major depression. i think most would agree we've been in a low-grade recession since 2007 (for the average person) with certain amounts of insane financier-speculative liquidity flowing in to paper over it, and now its time for the depression to hit as even the speculative liquidity dries up.

There's at least one of these online car sellers which is owned and operated by a fortune 500 company that doesn't give a poo poo about VC, they're going to be fine assuming inflation gets under control soon. If it doesn't then lol

Combination of 1. ferries typically don't travel very far 2. not many people use them 3. all it takes is a couple sinkings to juice the numbers.

Not included on that chart (as it was 2014) but that Korean ferry sinking took out a few hundred people.

If you look at the list of maritime disasters in the 21st century the ferry sinkings can have thousands of people die. If you're trapped inside the ferry when it goes down then there isn't much that you will be able to do, and even if you aren't the ferry isn't going to go down in good weather 9/10 times. Plus I bet that the ferry sinking will probably pull you under anyway
