I’m sure they could get away with doing nothing by citing public duty doctrine. Their union would probably easily win that case.

About time at least 1 cop responds the correct way.

For those unaware, in active shooter situations it is better to stack the bodies of assaulters than to give the shooter 1 second unmolested.

I don't think so; Colorado not having its own law mandating enforcement behavior is why it got kicked to the federal level in the first place.

I totally get that there's not really a legal will to enact laws like this at any level but something not being constitutionally enforced doesn't mean that enforcement can't exist. It just means that you can't seek help from constitutional verbiage in the event that you have an issue with what the state is doing.

Like cole pointed out, the police unions are the actual obstacle here. States and localities are clearly able to decide what their own law enforcement officers are required to do but you can see what happens when they try to do something the unions aren't a fan of.

Which is why I’m wondering why the local cops apparently decided to sit back after initially mixing it up with the shooter; what were they doing? Waiting for SWAT? Probably closer to 20. I feel like that was one of the main learned lessons from Columbine. Hell you could see that approach being used in France during various terrorist attacks, especially that supermarket one where they just dumped 100 rounds in the guy, who absolutely deserved it mind you.

Granted that was GIGN and not Hick County PD.

Columbine was the catalyst. Before then, the general thinking was to treat active shooters as terrorist/hostage incidents. Maintain a perimeter, wait for specialists and negotiators. Before that, the idea of an active shooter wasn't fleshed out. They were viewed as isolated incidents of the mentally ill, like Whitman in Austin. No one had really posited the idea that kids were the target as opposed to an accessory.

Within a few years, the thinking had changed, and SOP was wait outside, get a group, then move in. Realizing this wasn't saving lives, it changed again to buddy teams. As soon as you have a buddy, you hit the objective. Too much time on target. The paper standard (which all of this is) became you get on the objective, and you do everything in your power to draw his attention and affection.

All of this is thought exercise in execution- you cannot make a man go in. You can't make him hold his end of the social contract. And if dead kids aren't enough to spur action, I have recommendations for other career fields.

I know that I'm abnormal and mentally ill, but I don't understand how you as an adult human being could sit outside while it goes down. You think you are loving afraid? YOU signed for the job. You can quit and go home. Those loving kids were trying to color in the lines. They don't get to quit. They don't get to go home because YOU are scared. I don't understand how that FL cop that did nothing hasn't pulled a Kobain lobotomy. You don't get to be afraid, you son of Bitch. You forfeit that luxury when you strapped up.

This poo poo gets to me at a deep, unspoken level. Those kids are dead because everyone failed them.

I don't know how well this is understood, but there is a disease of cowardice and self-service in the psyche of much of America's police forces. They tell each other things like "Better to be tried by 12 than carried by six". They believe whole heartedly that they are the single most important part of society, and without them everything would immediately fall apart. They tell the people they are supposedly charged with protecting "you don't sign my paychecks". They try to pass this off as jokes, but they are fully internalized philosophies. Policing in America is fundamentally broken, and we are all at risk for it.

The idea is just so foreign to me. I don't understand how you can live with yourself as that type of person. I know I'm a totally different beast, but loving KIDS. My therapist said children are a special trigger for me, tho.
I'd go in with a loving brick- anything to buy those kids a half loving second to get away.

(I spoke with my therapist once about going into CPS/Social Work. "Absolutely not. You will end up in prison. You will do fine for a year or so, burn out and snap. There is no way you should consider those fields. Maybe daycare, or Preschool teacher.")

It's been established in the Supreme Court that basically you can't ever put a cop in a position where they're legally obligated to take any degree of risk to their life. Forget the exact case name. Plus the other older case in DC where the cops just let two women get raped over and over and the Supreme Court ruled cops don't have to do anything ever anyway. Somehow cops or courts putting people in impossible situations like the innocent person the supreme court just sent back to death row this week or the young man cops shot for drawing a gun while executing a no knock warrant on the wrong house is okay though.
