Chapter 76: 7/9: Lawyer Up (New)

This update contains content from Part 66 of the original LP.

Hello everyone. I’m about to graduate, so I’m of course spending my time working on this instead of studying for my final exam, writing my term paper, or finishing my final portfolio!

Anon: dunno what they want. NO

Early Morning

Anon: Phantom Thievess YAAAS!
Anon: I knew it!!!
Anon: A new hero is born!
Anon: YES! gently caress the mafia
Anon: NO poo poo??? hahaha

People are saying it was foretold by a calling card…
Oh, I know about that! I saw them in Shibuya!
That Phantom Thieves forum is super active.
There’s a forum!? What’s it called? I wanna see!

Music: Beneath the Mask (Instrumental Version)

(Nonchalant Guy) Did you catch the news report this morning about the mafia boss getting busted? Apparently, someone scattered calling cards all across Shibuya just before his arrest. Remember the Kamoshida scandal? They say the same thing happened, that someone left a calling card. Madarame too, if I’m not mistaken.
Do you think it’s the Phantom Thieves? If so, I’m impressed. I can’t believe they actually steal hearts!

Music: Disquiet

And yet he simply turned himself in—even confessed all his crimes. The Phantom Thieves…

Makoto, the law is a system the powerful use to protect what’s theirs. Under that definition, changing the heart of a powerful person is absolutely a crime because it threatens the established framework of power. You know this.
You’re sounding very critical of your own career…
The legal system is a disgustingly corrupt and morally bankrupt institution… and I’m headed straight to the top, baby!
Right… I was just wondering, considering all the people they help…
No! Bad! Don’t make me get the spray bottle again!

*sigh*

…drat it!

If this goes on much longer, it’ll interfere with my genius plan to install a megalomaniacal, murderous psychopath into the office of Prime Minister and then blackmail him, becoming his only remaining obstacle! It was foolproof, but these #Millennials are gonna gently caress it all up!

Early Morning → Morning

Music: So Boring

It sounds like some of our students had been victimized by them, so we can breathe easy for now. I’m thankful to the police for arresting the perp, even though they’re just doing their job.

Yeah, exactly! They didn’t do poo poo!

By the way, “perp” is police slang. You might have heard the stars in police procedurals say it. It’s short for “perpetrator.”

This is such a funny quirk of translation. I assume the slang was a bit more esoteric in the original Japanese, but they had to force it into this in English, which a child could figure out.

Speaking of stars… Can you answer this question, Hamiru-san?

Do you know what that shape is?

This is such a confusingly phrased question.

That’s correct.

Maaku gains Knowledge +1.

By the way, there are rumors that the Phantom Thieves took down the perp this time—Kaneshiro. I remember their name with that bit on Madarame as well as the incident in May. Is this a new urban legend? Anyway, please prepare for your tests starting Wednesday, and don’t be distracted by rumors like that.

You brought them up!

Looks like we succeeded in changing Kaneshiro’s heart! A lot of people are talking about the Phantom Thieves too!

Morning → After School

Music: Alright

Hell yeah, we took down Kaneshiro! Everyone’s been talkin’ about it since the police announcement!
Unfortunately, it seems that the police are claiming all the credit for the arrest…
Fuckin’ cops. We did the fun part, we should get the adulation.
You mean the *hard* part, right?
Ann, we swooped in on an ongoing investigation, basically beat the guy up until he confessed his crimes, then peaced out, leaving someone else holding the bag. I’m pretty sure I just described the fun part of being a cop. It wasn’t very difficult, either.
Right…
It is pretty awesome that we’ve left the cops with all the boring paperwork to do and none of the action. Almost brings a tear to my eye. Good work, team.
…Anyway…

Everything’s coming up #Millennials!

This is quite the turnaround. All of a sudden, people are expressing their long-standing belief in us.

Well, that’s simply impossible given how unpopular we were just a few days ago. The masses are clearly fickle and eager to save face. Hope that doesn’t come back around to bite us!
Good thing Makoto told us to post the calling card all around Shibuya. We got a ton of attention that way.
It was pretty smart of her. Where is our amazing Miss President anyway?

Uh-oh! My phone is suddenly ringing! I hope this isn’t Makoto extremely-conveniently calling at the exact moment she came up in conversation, because that would be loving terrifying!

AH JESUS
Is that her? Speak of the devil!
Oh, did I surprise you? Sorry. I sneezed and figured someone was talking about me, as seen in every anime ever made.
Why are you calling?

I’ve been called into a meeting with the principal.

She’s ratting us out, guys.
poo poo, I knew it!

There’s no need to worry though.

Wait, false alarm.
Huh!? Oh, uh… just kidding?

More importantly, there is a special on TV about the Phantom Thieves!
Huh? What did it say!?
They were talking all about our calling cards.
For real!?

They did also mention reports of as shady character going around posting them in high-traffic areas…. You might want to stay inconspicuous for a while, Ryuji.
Dammit…

Anyway, my apologies about today. I’ll have to see you all another time. *hangs up*

A TV special? How fortuitous… However, I hope this attention doesn’t cause the police to take notice.
Little late for that, buddy. We just killstole a notorious mafia boss out from under their noses.

It’ll be fine! No way they’d find out about that weird other world!

Yeah man, relax. The only way we’d be at risk would be if, say, the authorities already knew about the Metaverse. And the only way that would happen would be because, I don’t know, they’re in league with the black mask, the only other person we know of with access to it. But that would be craaaaaaaaaaaazy. So crazy, in fact, that we should just forget I even brought it up. Here, I’ll start. …… Hello, pleasure to meet you. I can’t seem to remember my name, but I’m sure we’ll all get along.
Ugh, is he broken again?
*sigh* I’m on it. *slaps Maaku*
Salutojn. Ĉu vi scias, kie estas la plej proksima fervoja stacidomo? Mia vango doloras.
I think he’s stuck.
Try kicking him in the groin.
I’m not doing that in public, people’d think it’s a fetish thing. Just ignore him, maybe he’ll snap out of it.
To get back on topic, I am worried about the other Metaverse user. Both Madarame and Kaneshiro mentioned him, so it would be unwise to write it off as a lie or coincidence…
Mi nur diris, ke ĉesu zorgi pri ĝi! Vi infanoj estas tiel nervozaj.
I agree, it’s concerning…
We’ll be fine, guys. Not like we have any idea what to do about it even if he wasn’t full of poo poo, after all.
Dankon. Vidu, li ricevas ĝin. Malstreĉiĝu.
…Gesundheit.

Anyways, in your face, Akechi! Now whaddya wanna do about our next target!?

It’s too early to think about that, numbskull.

Still, people might expect a lot from our next move considering how excited they’re getting.
We can’t just pick any old schmo now.

Mi scivolas, ĉu la bezono elekti pli grandajn homojn apartigos nin de niaj originalaj idealoj por ĉi tiu klopodo.

There is no need to hurry though. Counting Kamoshida, we’ve claimed three consecutive victories, right?

Parolu por vi mem.

We should just lay low and wait for all this excitement to blow over.

Let’s have another celebration, then!
Good idea! Let’s make it a welcomin’ party for Miss President, too! Ooh, and we can fund it by sellin’ that briefcase!
So… we’re not going to lay low, then?
I guess you don’t want to come, then?
I didn’t say that!

Hahaha, that’s the spirit. Well, I’m gonna let Makoto know!

Oh…
What’s wrong?
(on speaker) Hello? I hope you remember we have finals next week. Yusuke and Morgana excluded, of course.

Ne justa. Ankaŭ la kato devus studi.
Uh… *ahem*

If you wish not to stand out, you had best not get bad grades, okay? That is something I simply would not be able to overlook as student council president!

Just behave and study for now. We can have fun after finals… Understood?
Vi ne estas amuza.
Oh, I see I wasn’t hallucinating a moment ago. Is everything okay down there?
Define “okay.”
It’s all good… I think.
Dude’s brain is just a mystery. One time I asked him a question and he just stood there silently starin’ straight ahead for a long, long time, like whoever was in charge upstairs went to the bathroom or something.
Wait, I never heard about this! What did you do? Was it all right?
Yeah, after like ten minutes I was about to go get someone, but then he just said somethin’ really profound and continued the conversation without missing a beat.
Weird.
—and that’s how I spent my summer vacation.
Whoa, he’s back. You okay, man? You were speaking in tongues.
Oh, yeah. Apparently, my Personas sometimes fill my brain with random information and I can struggle to parse it all. I guess having like a dozen demons born from various disparate cultural myths hanging out in your head is bad for your brain or something! Weird!
So *that’s* how he always knows the answer when the teacher calls on him…
Anyway, studying bites. This sucks. Let’s just blow Makoto off.
I am still on the phone.

Let’s all just agree that whatever the gently caress I was doing with that scene completely got away from me and turned into an overindulgent mess, okay? I am under no pretensions about anything that just happened, I debated deleting all of that poo poo but I spent like two hours writing it.

Music: Disquiet

I believe in what I wrote…

“Phantom Thieves rule, haters can suck a fat one.”

Have you figured out who they are?

No, I was pretty objectively terrible at the whole “espionage” thing. That said, I have been thoroughly seduced by their roguish charms. They have the right of it, I believe. So, I’m unilaterally ending this investigation.

But that’s impossible!

Impossible? By what evidence do you make that claim? Might I take a look at it?
*sigh* It’s such a shame… I was just thinking, “Wow, Makoto’s so reliable, I probably don’t even need to blackmail her by dangling her college recommendation over her head any more, she’ll help me out here.” Looks like I was wrong about that…

There will be no need for that. I intend on getting into a good college by my own merit.

Though I suppose having a famous prosecutor for a sister probably won’t *hurt* my chances, now will it? *Some* nepotism is fine, I guess.

Kobayakawa pulls out his phone.

This had better be good.

About that…

Enough games. Is the investigation proceeding?

Yes, I am making progress. However, I have stumbled upon some difficulties… Still, why would someone as important as you be interested in a petty case like this?

…Jesus loving christ, these idiots can’t handle the simplest of tasks… *sigh* How unfortunate that you seem to have given up on the meager task we have assigned to you. In case it wasn’t clear, I mean that it’s unfortunate for *you*.

N-No! That’s not what I meant! I will investigate with all the resources available to me.

You’re a high school principal. What loving resources!? God, I told them this was a stupid plan… Ugh. Just find them. Don’t let us down again.

Of course… Um, I should be able to let you know relatively soon. Yes, I will bring good news… Well then, thank you for your—
*hangs up*

After School → Evening

Music: Days of Sisters

Hi, Sis. You look tired… Is everything okay?

Makoto, don’t tell me I look “tired.” I endure enough weird sexism at work, I don’t need more at home. Though yes, it was a rough day. Anyway, what about you and your studies?
I’ve been keeping on top of things, of course. Though I’m starting to wonder what the point of all of it is.
…Hm?
This just seems like a never-ending treadmill, where even if I succeed at a good college, I’m going to be thrust into a competitive and misogynistic society.

Hell yeah, Makoto! Get on that r/antiwork bullshit! I’m not even joking, that whips rear end!

That’s what life is. You suffer hard until you’re the best in the world at suffering, and then you get to make other people suffer. To think otherwise is childish.
*turning to TV* …Anyway, seems like this man confessed after the Phantom Thieves sent him a calling card.
The police can’t figure out why he did it. It was completely out of nowhere. It’s really like his personality completely changed… but that’s impossible.
Does it matter? The police caught him, after all.
I was on track to be promoted, but this confession has ruined things. I can’t take credit for any of it now. Of course, a *child* wouldn’t understand something like that. *leaves*
*calling after her* Hey, are we ever going to talk about you calling me a useless parasite a few weeks ago? No? Okay…

Sis really has changed, only thinking about her promotion…

But… I’ll be okay. …I finally found a place where I belong.

Music: Beneath the Mask

That doesn’t mean you can just slack off with summer on the horizon, got it?

It is only natural that people are surprised. Even the police were struggling to catch him.
Yeah. By the way, you said you were called in by the principal? Did something happen?

The principal wanted to know what was going on with my investigation into the Phantom Thieves. Oh, by the way, I was actually surveilling Maaku before I joined the team.
>Never woulda guessed.

Don’t worry. I didn’t mention a word about any of you. I essentially told him I was unable to find any information.

>Hope that doesn’t blow back onto you.
I’ll be fine, don’t worry.

I’ve graduated from my role as the exemplary honor student. From now on, I’m going to be more honest with myself. It’s quite a refreshing feeling.
What’re you gonna do now? Wanna stay with the Phantom Thieves?

That was my intention… Unless you guys didn’t want me to?
>I was actually planning on kicking you out, but it’s too awkward in the moment so we’ll table that for now.

It’d actually be a big problem if you didn’t stick with us.
We should allow her to join us. It would be greatly convenient.
Well then, I hope I can continue getting along with all of you.

This new teammate of ours is pretty promising! We’ll be able to do even more now!

Many people are surprised that such a major criminal was suddenly arrested.

“…Because the cops are worse than useless!”

Police are also reasserting their stance that the “Phantom Thieves” weren’t involved in the arrest.

“…Because the cops are worse than useless!”

However, some outlets are reporting otherwise.
The police should just be honest. Why play dumb?

They’re cops, Morgana.

Maaku gains Kindness +3.

Side note: I recorded everything before this (everything since finishing Kaneshiro’s Palace, anyway) in mid-November, 2021. I recorded everything after this in… late March, 2022. It is currently May 3rd. I’m going very, very slow.

We should be able to relax there, at least. That incident last time won’t happen again. I’m about to head there myself. Would you like to join me?

Oh hey, Akechi wants to hang out. I’m sure he won’t try to murder us (yet), even if he is presumably incredibly pissed we’re wrecking his master plan. First, though, we have some reactions of the public to mine for those precious brain chemicals we so crave.

Hey-looo, lil cricket. I mean, shee… cicada. What’re your summer… summer memoriesh?

Chip chjrp! Girsh! Oh. Oh, I fergot! I should really find a… a wives. Wife. Mother! Faaatheer! I’m shooory! I can’t make you a grandkid jush by mysheeeeeelf!

Chirp chirp chirp! Shummer’s too short… Life… ish too shooort…

(Innocent Grade Schooler) They steal people’s hearts, right? You think they can steal the tests for our summer classes?
No, dummy. If they steal anything, they’ll steal the hearts of our teachers and parents. They’ll make ‘em cry on TV and say they’re sorry because they made us study too much.

In honor of the Phantom Thieves, I give you… “Sometimes Blues”!

My heart hides behind tears
Will you steal it
Steal it away in eternal night
Hey, is it possible to change
And make the debut of my new
Self
The Phantom Thieves
Are the greatest

Thank you so much. How was my performance?

Haha, happy to hear! The blues is all well and good, but I need to live a rock n’ roll life like the Phantom Thieves!

??????

Naw, bro—I’ll just flex my connections like a boss!

Okay, so this is a weird mistake or glitch or whatever that I don’t think was in the original game. The devs just seem to have somehow… forgotten to place Reserved College Student in the world here. He’s nowhere to be found, but he’s still talking. Strange.

A lot of business executives appear to be nervous about his arrest.
(Earnest Office Worker) I didn’t know he was such a big deal… Bravo to the Phantom Thieves.
We shouldn’t celebrate them just yet… They still remain suspicious.

(Sullen Office Worker) He appeared in court on his own, didn’t he? That doesn’t make any sense.
Maybe, behind the scenes, he made a deal with the police or something.
Ahhh, okay, I can buy that. The police can’t really be trusted either.

Too true.

How do I put it…
(Cat) *sad meow*
Stuff like forced smiles and sensing the mood? There’s just still so much for me to learn!

(Rural Young Man) This place ain’t safe! There’s those creepy phantom thieves or whatever runnin’ wild. What if they snatch ya up in the dead of night? C’mon, let’s go back home.
I said drop it already! I’m so sick of hearing about the country!

Yeah, things quieted down after Kaneshiro’s arrest. Those Phantom Thieves actually did it. Stealing hearts sounds crazy, but you know what? It makes this game of life more interesting.

Since the Phantom Thieves dealt with Kaneshiro, the city suddenly got real quiet. Tch, it doesn’t feel like Shibuya if there’s not any danger in the air.

Heh heh. Hey, I work at night. If you got a job for me, just leave a letter in that trash bin. If there’s any annoying trash you want taken out, I’ll dispose of it for ya. Hahaha!

(Fishy Hawker) No way, my parents are scumbag gambling addicts! And as their son, I’m a natural scumbag too!

This guy kind of rules.

You’ve got other worries! People are saying the Phantom Thieves do better work than the police!
Hrmph, what a rotten bastard… I’ll get you one of these days.

(Julian) Hey, careful with how you say things! You’ve got such a dirty mind, you know that?
Look who’s talking! Lusting after a boy at least 20 years younger than you!
Oh, lay off! I can’t help it! Besides, I’m not really me if I’m not in love with somebody, right?

I was positive they didn’t end up changing these optional lines for the Royal localization, and sure enough, they didn’t. Ugh.

(Show-Biz Veteran) People are wising up now that Kaneshiro’s behind bars. That just means we gotta go after those poor, naïve country bumpkins! Bring ‘em in, even if you gotta do it by force—got it?

Ouch, no need to roast me.

A-Anyway, please be careful…

…Hey, you all right there? You look even drunker than usual…
(Sake Reporter) *hiccup* How can I not drink on a glorious day like this!? I’m gonna be published! Published, my good man! They’re gonna make a book outta all the articles I’ve been writin’! It’s comin’ out next year!
Well, isn’t that something? Congrats! I’m happy for ya!
So today’s an early celebration! Keep the drinks comin’!

And now, I can’t even count on Niijima-kun’s cooperation any more…

I’m glad I found the principal here because you get to listen to Richard Epcar fake-drunkenly yell the line “I’M SURROUNDED BY IDIOTS!”

(Charismatic Manager) Why? What happened?
Well, I wanted to look for a place in Kichijoji, so I called a realtor… but there ain’t a single apartment with a bathroom bigger than a closet for under 40k a month!
You know that’s not just Kichijoji, right? You won’t find an apartment for under 40k anywhere in Tokyo. If you want to live your ideal life, you need a way to pay for it.

SILENCE, CAPITALIST

Do you have some time right now?

All right, Akechi time.

There was a place I wanted to visit with you, but what do you think? It’s a special place for me. I’m hoping you’ll like it too…

Sure, sounds like a date.
…I think you’re using that word incorrectly.
No, I think I know what it means. What, you turning me down?
…Anyway…

Great. It’s actually really close… Just follow me. I’ll take you there.

Music: What’s Going On?

It’s not quite an apology for that little incident back at the café, but rest assured we’re safe here. I’m a regular. It’s nice to take some time off when we can, don’t you think?

It’s just a jazz club. You get to hear some great performers here.

Is it safe to assume you’ve visited places like this before?

Seeing this event allows us to visit this jazz club for realsies whenever we want.

You don’t have any soft drinks you actively dislike, yes?

Akechi orders some drinks using the classic gesture of raising two fingers. Or was it three? Last time I got that bit of etiquette wrong people died, I should really try to remember.

We have a special performance today, so I hope you enjoy it.

A woman walks up to the microphone behind Maaku.

Music: No More What Ifs (Listen to this)

The music here is clearly diegetic, or “in-universe,” which is a neat touch. Also neat: this song is sung by the same woman who sings all of Persona 5’s vocal tracks, Lyn. Considering that the woman singing this song in-game doesn’t look all that unlike Lyn (which I am judging primarily off like, hair colour because everyone here looks anime), I think it’s fair to say that this is actually supposed to be her. Nifty.

You think they take song requests? I want to see if they know anything from Mingus.

Work and obligations take me to quite a few restaurants and cafés, but this place is a little more special to me. I guess you could call it my go-to place. Do you have anywhere like that?

It’s really convenient!

You live there? I’m… not sure that counts as a go-to place if you don’t actually have to go anywhere.

I live alone myself, but I rarely have the time to cook my own meals…

I usually come here when I need some time to really think on my own. So chatting with you here is really quite refreshing. You know, you’re the first person I’ve ever brought here…

I’m not sure they could make this gayer if they tried.

Jesus christ!

Oh hey, this seems incredibly useful, even if it’s not going to activate very often!

Music: Alright (Elp Version)

Wasn’t the music today wonderful? Live bands always have this certain power to their music. Certainly the point of jazz is all those jam sessions. A sea of improvisation, both complex and organic… As each player incorporates their own flavors, a natural melody is born from chaos. There’s something about that strange, erratic synchronicity… It’s a euphoria like when I manage to solve a case.

Akechi’s lucky he’s so pretty, because that was really pretentious.

I thought I’d have more luck if I brought someone who I know can keep up with me intellectually. Jazz is a deep and complex style. I’d love for us to sit down and really talk about it sometime. Ah, I should let you go… Somehow I always end up talking more than usual when it’s with you. Expect another invitation soon. For now, please excuse me.

Music: Interrogation Room

This new ally you gained was Makoto!?

Sae slams the table twice. She’s really mad at it.

Wait, poo poo, I wasn’t supposed to say that. Just ignore that bit. I was, uh… lying.

Just tell me the truth!
>You already know the truth.

Hell yeah, nailed it! Hey, did you like that line? I’ve been practicing that one.

Makoto…

…Was Makoto also running from the police when you were arrested!?
>Ask her yourself.

2 for 2! God, I’m so loving cool right now.

Now that I think about it… she did start talking a lot about the investigation from summer onward… *gasp*

Yeah, we actually told her to chill a bit with that because you two weren’t on great terms and your natural grouchiness seemed like it could easily give way to suspicion, but she was very proactive about trying to lean on you for intel.
Then... that time she said Dad would have agreed with the Phantom Thieves and I yelled at her and called her useless... Was she already working with you?
Lemme think... Hm... Based on that time Ann called her useless and she overreacted in the extreme... No, that was before.
Oh...

Makoto aside, you mentioned one other important detail. Did Kaneshiro really say there was someone using the Metaverse besides the Phantom Thieves?

Yep. Honestly, I’m only about 40% lucid at the moment, so I’m not even sure I’m capable of telling a good lie right now.

Those words could just be taken as you shifting blame to this other person, you know.

I mean, yes, I am blaming them. But also, it’s the truth.

……

You could be lying…
Again, no, not really.
…But it doesn’t really make sense for you to make up such a ridiculously implausible story simply to shift the blame, does it? And this tale, however fantastical, is so far entirely congruent with the facts of the case…

There are two possibilities: either you’ve simply been trying to confuse me with your lies… Or everything you’ve stated is true.

You’ve figured out that either I’m lying or I’m telling the truth? Wow, great work. We’ve been in here for like two hours. Though to be fair, a lot of that was you questioning me about random poo poo you found in my bag. Like, no, the stick of gum I had in my pocket was not actually a small quantity of C-4 explosive I received from a disgraced military contractor who I had to teach how to love again. Well, some of that didn’t happen, anyway.
Fine, I’ll believe you. Or at least, I’ll believe that you’re not *totally* full of poo poo. I’ll decide what’s true or false myself.
That’s good. Let’s start over, then. Hi, Maaku Hamiru. Nice to meet you.
I’ll keep an open mind, but you need to tell me nothing but the whole truth, okay. That sound like a fair deal?

I’ve made a deal with Sae Niijima…

You wouldn't let yourself be captured without some secret escape plan, would you? No, you must have a plan, or someone on the inside at least, to help you get out of this. Tell me who you're planning to use to escape justice!
Sae.
Oh, uh... Sorry.

Music: The Spirit

And we’re finally at the point where we unlock the Judgement arcana. Well, sort of. We still can’t actually reap the benefits for quite a while.

Music: Interrogation Room

Actually, I should rephrase that: they targeted your group first, didn’t they?

If what you’ve told me is true, then this “Nav” thing you’ve mentioned wouldn’t have worked in this case. How did you target them? Tell me everything.

Yeah, to tell you the truth, we actually totally cheated on this one…

…I just realized I have to go watch more of the P5 anime now. gently caress.

That sounds like a dropped 0 because 40k yen is $300, which is fantastic for a major urban area even if it's a closet. Maybe they meant 400k yen/month?

In the first 2 games having a persona did affect the owner, somewhat. A weird creepy teen grows up to be a successful salesman because he has Mara as a persona and it somehow makes him charismatic, apparently. His former classmate works at the same place and does significantly worse because his death tarot persona makes him scary.

This is such a funny quirk of translation. I assume the slang was a bit more esoteric in the original Japanese, but they had to force it into this in English, which a child could figure out.

Yeah, she says it's 'hoshi', police slang for 'yougisha' (suspect), they're completely different words. I presume hoshi is from the word for want/desire which conjugates as various things that begin with hoshi.

"Star" is also hoshi, which makes that segue less of a stretch than it was in English.

Chapter 77: Side Story 4: Still Going (ugh)

Well, we’re back here again. Gonna go through the Thieves’ Den a bit and then post some notes on the anime. *sigh* Let’s just get to it, okay?

Music: No More What Ifs (Instrumental Version)

Did I wish to see him fall? Did I wish for him to confess his crimes? I have yet to come to an answer, even now.
Do you really need one? Sometimes, it’s just not that easy.
Lady Ann is right. Nothing good can come of forcing your feelings.
I see. That’s very prudent. Ann… Morgana… Thank you.

Let’s get some new items in here.

She’s was [sic] a frickin’ genius figurin’ out that vault door thing.
She wrapped her head around all that cognition stuff so quickly, too. She really is the brains of the Phantom Thieves.
For real! We sure as hell weren’t gonna fill that role ourselves.
I know, right?
…Wait, isn’t that kind of sad?

I’m glad you appreciate my splendor, Makoto!
Keep the praise coming! In front of Lady Ann, if possible.
Yeah, yeah… I’ll keep that in mind.

He even had a little pose for it.
How long did you practice that routine, Morgana?
Don’t be ridiculous! It’s not like I spent time preparing!
So you just came up with it on the spot? That’s kinda weird too, isn’t it?

:lmao:

……
Meow?
Ugh, don’t play dumb with me!
Let’s just give him this one.

I have to be thankful to her. To Johanna. She helped me break free of those chains and rode by my side.
…I suppose it’s a little strange to be thanking a piece of my own heart, though.
I totally get you, though. I feel the same way about my own.
Someday, I’d like to tell her… Thank you for fighting with me.

Lady Ann on TV…!? The views would go through the roof!
But… If she gets super popular, she’ll end up in the crosshairs of more than a few unsavory characters…
Not to worry, Lady Ann! I’ll protect you!
The hell are you talkin’ about, man?
Well, if that happens, I’ll be sure to hire you as my bodyguard.

And that’s enough of that for now, time for ANIME:

    Episode 9

  • Man, the pacing continues to be utterly delirious. This is just basic editing problems relating to timing between cuts.
  • I know this episode is called “Operation maid watch,” so obviously it’s gonna deal with Kawakami (eeurgh), but are we seriously wasting time on “I have all these dirty Mementos clothes, if only someone could wash them for me”?
  • Okay, lol, making the cat watch the machine is kinda funny
  • Didn’t need any of this scene of Ann bathing!
  • NEWSPAPER CLUB MEMBER
  • Oh, and it’s Yumeko!
  • Haru too! Look at all these fun little easter eggs! I’m too easy to please!
  • Get out of here, Mishima! You don’t want none of this poo poo!
  • Coming off his roles in JJBA and Trails of Cold Steel, Sean Chiplock is kind of a weird pick for Mishima to me, I’m realizing.
  • ”Operation Maidwatch!” “THAT’S EPIC”
  • Watching this with several months between each batch has caused me to forget any previous scenes with Ren and Takemi. Turns out this is a bad way to watch this show!
  • Is this entire episode going to be miscellaneous Confidant poo poo?
  • Ren, why are you embarrassed, you were the one who was most into this a minute ago
  • Michelle Ruff’s “Becky” voice is weirding me out for some reason
  • Oh, yep, it’s getting really “sultry” now, I hate this
  • Kawakami, you’re looking directly at his face, come on, you should recognize him by now
  • There’s already plenty of eye candy here, show, you don’t need to cut to a POV shot of Ren staring at her boobs
  • Chouno is just Amanda Winn Lee doing her Shadow Yukiko voice
  • Oh, we’re just doing Ryuji’s Confidant now, I guess that is the whole rest of this episode
  • Ren calling Kawakami for maid poo poo to get information on the track team is, admittedly, pretty clever on the part of the writers, but it kind of loses something from having Ryuji volunteer that information himself. Does make the story more efficient, I’ll give it that.
  • Yamauchi is blatantly Kirk Thornton (the SIU Director). I am cursed with voice actor knowledge.
  • Okay, honestly? This has been one of the better episodes, mostly because it’s been willing to rewrite and rework stuff pretty thoroughly to suit the narrative.
  • Not happy with the “Ryuji gets beaten up” joke, but it is pretty funny that they put footage of Kawakami listening with a smile over it. Maybe not in the way they intended.
  • M A S S A G E S
  • Very good joke that they follow up the “massages” line with Kawakami waiting for laundry.

    Episode 10

  • Early Hifumi!
  • ”I DIDN’T DO IT” Lmao, goddammit Mishima
  • Oh, they’re putting the pancakes scene after the interview, weird
  • Yeah, I’m definitely watching this in the worst possible way, because when Ann said that Akechi and Ren had already met I had completely forgotten that scene (it was from episode 5).
  • Wait, poo poo, but Ann wasn’t there for that scene!
  • Akechi, make eye contact, you’re being rude
  • Robbie Daymond sounds really animated in the pancakes scene in a way Akechi never was in the game. It’s just a bit of weird direction but it comes across as almost flirty, which, hey, I guess maybe they do understand something here.
  • Lmao that the first voice on Makoto’s recording is Ann instead of Ryuji in this version, that amuses me for some reason
  • I’m just now realizing that they haven’t seeded Kaneshiro’s blackmail stuff at all in this. It’s all completely out of nowhere.
  • We’re also skipping all the actual investigation work here so there’s really no reason to take any of it seriously as a viewer.
  • The karaoke joke actually kind of works in this version.
  • Did it… seriously not occur to you guys that the boss would have a Palace? What were you even trying to do if you didn’t think he had one?
  • Morgana, just because he’s wearing his school bag like a backpack does not make it a backpack
  • All right, hell yeah, jumping right into the roving homosexual nonsense, let’s just rip this band-aid off quick
  • Seems like they also changed those guys to be ever-so-slightly less offensive in this (edit: uh, maybe spoke too soon on that one).
  • No, nuh-uh, I refuse to believe Ohya would leave Crossroads early. That’s a slanderous lie.
  • LALA!
  • ”Hey! Are you old enough?” “I, uh, *soft muttering*” Okay, that got a genuine laugh out of me.
  • ”The syndicate here in Shibuya”? You’re in Shinjuku! How drunk are you!?

    Episode 11

  • Papa Niijima is voiced by Richard Epcar, and it’s super weird because he’s also, you know, the principal.
  • And one of the cops talking about her father’s death immediately afterwards is Kaneshiro! And the other ones are Yusuke and Iwai!
  • Way more venom from Elizabeth Maxwell for this scene where Sae yells at Makoto. At least this time she claims she didn’t mean it, I guess! And actually bothers to leave the room!
  • ”From where [did you fall]?” Gee, Ren, take two loving guesses, you already know about the flying bank
  • Oh wow, this scene in Kaneshiro’s club where his goons almost sexually assault Makoto is very upsetting!
  • Kaneshiro seems like he’s hard to draw well, I feel for the animators, but also, lmao, he looks like poo poo approximately 50% of the time.

  • This shot, on the other hand, rules:

  • Kaneshiro stuffs money directly into the boobs of this woman with Morgana’s voice actress
  • This bit of Makoto’s POV listening to Morgana meowing rules
  • Makoto’s VA straight-up says the wrong name referring to Ann here, “Tamaki-san.”
  • Still really hate these voice filters on the Shadows
  • I like the Johanna voice more in the anime honestly
  • Goddammit, the bike is CG!
  • I kinda missed these bad fight scenes, I say as poorly-drawn shadows leap at our protagonists, causing Ann to backflip away to where the camera is waiting to leer at her rear end.
  • And yet more rear end in Makoto’s naming scene! Bad show! Bad!

    Episode 12

  • Oh, we’re doing the Makoto Confidant unlock stuff here… but don’t you guys have more important poo poo to be doing right now?
  • Xander Mobus just does not sound like even a fictional high school student to me, I’m sorry, Ben Platt rear end over here
  • This is definitely supposed to be the end of the first “set” of episodes, as evidenced by the way this one is being staged to emphasize the characters and their meager arcs as they infiltrate Kaneshiro’s Palace.
  • Lol, origin story for the CRT
  • They made Kaiji Tang do a Brooklyn accent for the goon who reads the calling card to Kaneshiro, this rules
  • This is a rough-looking episode even by this show’s standards:

  • I like that they actually have the Shadow rap, though
  • The Baton Pass part is cool, I guess, but all this circumstance just highlights that Kaneshiro is a rather weak villain to end this part of the story on. P4A Episode 12 this is not.
  • Decent remix of Life Will Change, though (wait, it’s the version from Dancing in Starlight, actually)
  • YEET
  • Can’t believe Yoshida hasn’t shown up yet, smh
  • Looked ahead at future episodes and the next batch is gonna be like five, uggggghhhhhh

Two things: First, I'm going to try to put out a real update this week, don't worry. Second, I edited the interrogation room scene in the last update to add some stuff I meant to put in there but forgot:

Lemme think... Hm... Based on that time Ann called her useless and she overreacted in the extreme... No, that was before.

Early Morning

Music: Beneath the Mask (Instrumental Version)

I know this routine. Time for the manual labor!

Early Morning → Daytime

I’m busy with my washing, though! You’re just standing there!

Not true. I’m busy answering this important phone call.

Sojiroooooo! This printer you bought me isn’t cute!
…I don’t know what that means. Just hold on, I’ll be right over.

*hangs up* *sighs*

Lock up for me if I don’t come back.

It’s like 10 in the morning, dude! How long are you going to be gone!?
Just quit complaining. It’s urgent.
Knowing you and those weird phone calls you’re constantly getting you never talk about, it’s probably women troubles.
What? Oh, uh… yeah, sure.
One day, you will have to teach me your ways.
Not today, though.

(TV Reporter) This case is said to be a result of the Phantom Thieves’ actions, but what do you think?
(Pundit) We don’t know their methods, but I believe they are a menace that will threaten this law-abiding country. This dangerous group tampers with people’s hearts. It’s no different from brainwashing.
(TV Reporter) I see. You’re absolutely correct.

Didn’t the Phantom Thieves punish that Madarame fellow? What an awful man… The Phantom Thieves must be good, then.

(Elderly Male Customer) That may be true, but…
(to Maaku) Don’t you think so too, deary? The Phantom Thieves aren’t doing anything wrong, are they?

Of course not! There ain’t no law that says the Phantom Thieves can’t change hearts! I dare you to find that law anywhere!
I was talking more in the broader philosophical sense of “right” and “wrong,” beyond the domain of “lawful” or “unlawful”…
What? Oh, yeah, that too.

Oh my, look at the time. We should probably head home.
Ah, you’re right. Thanks for the drink.

Music: Disquiet

But to think the Phantom Thieves would honestly attempt an absurd idea like social reform…

I know, right? Like, grow up. When I criticize the establishment, I’m just *saying* poo poo, I’m not actually going to *do* anything about it. And everyone knows that and is fine with it, because I’m a politician! These irritating Phantom Thieves don’t seem to understand how the world works. Unfortunately, they’re winning the public over.

...You’re absolutely right. I’m not pleased about the general public’s support of them either. There’s also the danger of the Metaverse being exposed with their continued actions…

If nothing else, it’s going to draw attention to the work we’re having that Akechi brat perform for us. People are going to link the two eventually… Speaking of Akechi, did he tell you how he plans to respond?

…Actually, there is one countermeasure he brought in that seems usable. It involves having the Phantom Thieves destroy themselves without our direct intervention…

Oh, that plan? I don’t know why you would say it doesn’t involve our “direct intervention,” it involves calling out the Phantom Thieves under a false identity, baiting them, then framing them for several murders. But that one was my idea, actually.

…Ah, I thought as much. I had a feeling that it was too brutal for it to be his own idea.

You really think this plan is beyond him? I know he’s just a brat, but something about him freaks me out…

Still, to think you’d go through such elaborate detail to crush them… Their actions must be that much of an eyesore for you. I sympathize with what you’re going through.

It’s true, thank you for that… whatever your name is.

Well then, we’ll clean this up quickly and put it behind us. Yes. A grand undertaking like social reform is beyond a group such as the Phantom Thieves. Only a select few are worthy of changing the world. And who better than the future Prime Minister… sir?

Haha, yeah, cute, I get it. You can quit massaging my ego now. Actually, you know what? Never mind, keep doing it.

Daytime → Evening

Music: Break it Down (Elp Version)

Bull. poo poo. I don’t hear any other sounds. Heh, I bet you’re at home, right?

Anyway, we’re right outside. We’re coming over for you-know-what!
What!? No! It’s Sunday! This is my Tora Time!

Music: Alright

No, we’re here to study for finals, idiot!

*sigh* Why am I here too?

What, you too good to study with us?
I fear there’s no way to say this without causing offense, so I’ll just be direct: I’m afraid that studying with you all would be… actively counterproductive.
Yeah, fair, we’re dumb.
I’m not even in the same grade as you, and Yusuke even attends a different school. I can’t imagine this will be all that productive a study session.
Just help, please.

*sigh* I couldn’t ask the last time I was here… But what is this place? The storekeeper doesn’t seem to be around...

edit from the future: I previously had a joke here about Makoto not having been here before because I forgot she comes here after stealing Kaneshiro's Treasure, laugh at my forgetfulness

I live here.
Huh!?

He’s got complicated circumstances… We can tell her about it, right? Actually, tell her yourself.

The rest of us are pretty much the same. Not quite as bad as him though, obviously. We all became Phantom Thieves because there’s stuff we just couldn’t put up with. What about you, Makoto? Is there someone you can’t forgive? Whose heart do you wanna change?
…Let’s just get to studying.
Ooh, a secret!

Studying blooooooows… What’s on TV?

(In the original version of this scene, Ryuji complains that he’ll never use English in the future. I just think that’s funny because there’s an untranslatable moment in the scene where the group arrives in Hawaii where he badly speaks English).

(TV Reporter) This case is said to be the result of the Phantom Thieves’ actions, but in actuality, is this true?

(on TV) Considering that a calling card was left, there’s no room for doubt. It’s not like you could just *fake* one of those, right? But the real question is the Phantom Thieves’ method. If they really did meddle with a suspect’s heart, the confession may well be fabricated.
Has there been any evidence of that?
Um… no, but… we can’t forget that while the Phantom Thieves may be exposing real injustices in society, doing so by extralegal means is a dangerous way to think.
Isn’t that the opposite of what you just said?
In conclusion, the Phantom Thieves are a land of contrasts and no different from the criminals they target. Thank you.

Music: Break it Down

Man, eff that guy. We’re not the bad ones here!
Just ignore him. People are starting to understand that we’re doing the right thing.
It might be time to start thinkin’ about a new target, too! The wind’s blowin’ in our direction! We can’t lose to anything right now!
Okay, that’s enough of a study brea—
Oh! We never settled on a celebration for after exams! There’s a fireworks festival coming up soon, isn’t there?
Sounds great! Let’s do it!
Fine. But study first, okay?

(recording) There’s a fireworks festival coming up soon, isn’t there?

Fine. But study first, okay?

Hehehe… ……

Music: Beneath the Mask

I’ll kill him. I’ll kill him. I’ll kill him. …That’s all it says. Rumor has it she’s talking about her boyfriend.

>Sounds dangerous. And not in a hot way.

Yeah, it seems like she’ll do something real bad someday, right? And, it gets even worse. As it turns out, she’s a Shujin student. You know a girl named Yumeko Mogami? She’s always up near the classrooms on the second floor… Please, you have to do something before things get worse!
Heheh! This is a good opportunity for us! Kaneshiro’s change of heart has probably opened up some deeper parts of Mementos. Let’s make some time and talk about it at the hideout

Yeah, all right, you fuckin’ creep.

Uhhh… No trouble, no sir!

Loud and clear.

Yeah, I could tell.

Noted.

Just before his arrest, “calling cards” with the suspect’s name were posted all over the area. Pictures of these were spread on the internet. Some claim these are proof that the “Phantom Thieves” exist.
Putting calling cards up all over town was really effective. Getting famous might keep us pretty busy.

Music: Break it Down (Elp Version)

You still got time to read. Let’s go a little further.

Ah, these stories are way too spooky for me. Don’t talk to me about any of them, okay?

3spooky5me

Although… you do seem a lot more dependable now that you’ve read them.

Maaku gains Guts +3.

Are they just choosing bad people to steal hearts from?
Maybe someone’s asking them to do it.
Oh yeah, don’t they have a forum or something?
What if you make a request on there and they actually follow through?

And that’s gonna do it for today, because I’m very sick at the moment and don’t have the energy to sit down and be funny!

Even leaving aside the Japanese legal system's love of confessions (voluntary or otherwise), in the cases the Phantom Thieves have been involved in so far it would be easy to corroborate it with other testimony and hard evidence. It'd be a bit like the narrator in the Tell-Tale Heart, driven mad by guilt, directs the cops who didn't even suspect them to tear up the floorboards and reveal the crime. I do think this does cause issues for the prosecution of Shido, where he can't bring a lot of hard evidence to his confession and his collaborators are powerful people who can make inconvenient facts/evidence disappear.

Arist
Feb 13, 2012

who, me?

Yeah, basically. Shido is well enough protected by his powerful followers and by actually having somewhat covered his tracks that he can't be nailed down even having confessed, which is sort of what you're looking for. Outside of that, the Phantom Thieves' confessions not actually being accepted wouldn't really make sense, because there's loads of hard evidence to back up the confessions.

I think if Okumura had lived, that might have been how that could have gone, though. Dude overworked his employees? Oh, perish the thought. That's sooooooo unusual. Like, they're not going to arrest him for wage theft (though they should), so I'm not sure what would actually have come of that.

kvx687

Soiled Meat
Wasn't Okumura involved in the conspiracy? I think he was connected enough to point the finger at Shido for the mental shutdown cases, which would have been a problem for them even if they didn't have the hard evidence to actually make it stick. Beyond that, I don't think he was actually expecting to go to jail for his actions, he was just hit by an attack of conscience and was going to quit his position as CEO.

It feels like Okumura is sort of played up as a quasi Elon Musk figure, a guy who's lauded as both a business genius and panned as a gigantic rear end in a top hat who naturally paints a target on his back. It is a bit of a running theme that society at large is chasing a bunch of distractions to avoid asking (and answering) hard questions about where it's going. It is easier to ignore the bruises on the students, volleyball is a tough sport and besides look at the trophies he's won! Madarame is an artistic genius, mastering a billion genres effortlessly! Big Bang Burgers is obviously the cause of all of Japan's problems with workforce boundaries, if you take out that smug rear end in a top hat Okumura clearly everything will be fine! It's not an endemic issue at large, which is why I'm voting for that bald guy who made a bunch of vague promises.

Also there’s no guarantee he was actually the top voted person on the Phan-site. Remember that Shido’s faction had a hacker (this is also the person who acts as Medjed if you fail Futaba’s palace) who was manipulating the polling under Mishima’s nose.

About to post the new update. It's probably silly to even mention, but I still feel the need to do so just in case: this update, which I recorded about two months ago, features the scene in Mishima's Rank 5 Confidant where he brings a model gun to the diner. Given... everything going on right now, this may feel a bit inappropriate. I have consciously avoided making any joking references to anything resembling recent events (and would have done so even if those tragedies had not happened, because that poo poo just categorically isn't funny), but I don't know if I can really get away with making jokes around a gun at all in the present moment, even if I avoided even joking about actually using it. Basically, I'm just saying that if you feel extra sensitive to the subject right now, maybe skip that part. It's right at the end, so you don't need to look for where to resume. I don't want to upset anyone and I tried to avoid doing so, but I always second-guess myself in times like these so I wanted to be sure so people can just enjoy the LP. Thanks.

Music: Beneath the Mask (Instrumental Version)

…I didn’t expect the Phantom Thieves would suppress a man that even the police had trouble with.

Really, I assumed they’d all just be useless, parasitic gloryhounds leeching off the positive attention from their previous exploits, too indolent to tie their shoes properly! But I digress!

The fact they have so much support online is worrisome. I’m in a bind since I previously denounced them. All the interviews these days ask me about that. …Still, can we really say the Phantom Thieves are on the side of justice with just this example?

Phantom Thieves… bad? Buh?????

I was originally investigating the mental shutdown incidents.

poo poo, I meant, “investigating,” not “instigating.”
You didn’t say “instigating.”
Anyway!

People change suddenly and cause strange accidents or horrible crimes… …Don’t you think it’s similar to the change of heart that the Phantom Thieves are doing?

Wait… huh. Yeah, you’re right, that *is* weird.

…… Now that I think about it, their actions mirror the mental shutdown cases, with the rate of victims. It’s impossible not to see a connection there…

I know—er, believe—that the Phantom Thieves didn’t do this, but… that’s weird! Please, tell me more about these mental shutdowns, I’m very intrigued now!

…Ah, sorry. I don’t want to make you late. I’ll see you again.

Wait, no, come back!

“Shibuya Crime Ring Reveals All!” The leader’s confession has led to the arrest of other key members. “Sudden Rampage? Highway Accident!” The driver’s death has been confirmed, taking the total count up to four. “Hotspots of Tokyo!” Come see the summer fireworks show on July 18th!
Thanks to Kaneshiro spilling the beans, that organization is falling like a house of cards.

Checkmate.

Hehehe… We’re getting more and more famous!

Early Morning → Morning

Music: So Boring

I know some of you rely on all-nighters, but I can’t recommend it. That really messes up your information retention. Oh, speaking of! Do you guys know the difference between short-term and long-term memory? The simple answer is that short-term memory’s more temporary. Contextual. But long-term memories stick with you. In the short-term, you’re working with a hard limit. You retain only… six, maybe seven pieces of information. But your brain’s capacity for long-term memory is huge. It might even be infinite, according to some theories.

That… sounds wrong.

Okay, so… Hamiru-kun! What do you think about all this?

Goddammit, what’s the point of befriending the teachers if they keep calling on me anyway?

Short-term memories only stick with you for seconds at a time. That said… How long do you think you can retain long-term memories?
So he wants to know how long you keep long-term memories, huh…? This is a tricky one.

Just by the way this question is being framed here, it’s clear that the expected answer is “Forever.” I’m not actually sure that answer is accurate, mind you, but that’s the one they want!

What is long-term memory, anyway?

Yeah, it was something like that! So anyway, you keep them for a long time. The question is, how long. Maruki mentioned something about the amount of memories you could store, right? Something like…

Still sounds like pseudoscience, sorry.

Yeah! If you have theoretically infinite space for them… then theoretically, you’d be able to retain them for…

Yeah. I think so too. …So that’s it. Long-term memories will never really fade away!

I could potentially go Google this and rant for several paragraphs, but… gently caress, I guess I’m about to go do that, huh? Fine, but only a quick little rant. I just graduated and I’m still doing homework, uggggghhhhh…

Okay, so as Makise Kurisu taught us, the memory capacity of a human brain is about 2.5 petabytes. One petabyte is 1,000 terabytes or 1,000,000 gigabytes, for the uninitiated. The human brain is truly a marvel… except for the bits where, you know, it just randomly deletes poo poo from itself. Your brain can’t get “full,” per se, because before that could ever possibly happen your brain just deletes unnecessary information. What qualifies as “unnecessary,” you ask? Half the poo poo I learned in college, apparently! *laugh track*

Part of this whole mess is that it’s not actually possible to properly “recall” events the way we imagine ourselves doing. There’s no way to perfectly capture an image in your mind and bring it back later. Instead, you recreate the pattern of firing neurons that occurred when you originally saw it. You’re literally recreating the image every time you remember it.

But infinite memories forever? Still seems wrong, doesn’t it? That’s only because it is. Even long-term memories will fade. But, of course, you didn’t need me to tell you that. It’s basic sense. Bit of an anticlimactic end to this spiel, though, but it’s sort of to be expected because brains are fuckin’ hard to understand.

That’s right! I’m impressed!

It’s not, we just went over this.

Basically, stuff encoded into your long-term memory never really goes away. Short-term memories become long-term memories through reiteration. It’d be great if you could encode all the test answers to long-term memory, huh? Ah well. Can’t always get what you want.

Not doing that reference, for one. Second, you’re a teacher, you probably shouldn’t be advocating for cheating, right?

Maaku gains Knowledge +1.

But at least you’ve got summer break once the exams are over! So do your best to study, okay?
Yeah, memories never really go away… That means I’ll remember my past eventually, right…?

Morning → Afternoon

Finals end on the 16th, so that should be good, right?
What are you talking about?
The fireworks festival.
You’re really quick to look up stuff like that…

>You should probably be paying attention. We have finals soon.

I’ll do that tomorrow.
Hey, we’re in the middle of class. Talk about those things later.

>Cop.
I said the same thing you did!

You! Pay attention! Is that how you listen when someone’s talking to you!?

God, this poo poo again!?

(Male Student) I can’t believe he dodged Ushimaru’s throw… Is he a ninja?
Tch… Well, whatever. Moving on.
Ooh, you’ve got the entire class’s attention! Your Charm has definitely increased.

Maaku gains Charm +2.

Afternoon → After School

Music: Break it Down

Heading home? It’s rare running into you at this hour.

It seems to be growing quite popular. I saw someone heading into the nurse’s office just as I was leaving the school… The teachers say he’s been well worth his time here, but I have a feeling there’s more to his popularity than just talent…

Uncharacteristically rude of you, Makoto. But yes, it is largely because he’s extremely hot.

Maybe I should find out for myself at some point…

Naturally, that’ll still happen when I get home. It’s part of my daily routine. …I appreciate your concern, but how about yourself?

*chuckle* I’m joking.

I need to buy some more test prep booklets on my way home. See you later.

Music: Break it Down (Elp Version)

*nod*
Same here—I don’t have club practice today. That reminds me, there’s something I wanted to report to you. Would now be a good time?

Thank you. Why don’t we find a seat somewhere?

Oh goddammit

WHAT

HUH

My father works at a TV station. Have you ever seen “Good Morning Japan”? My father’s the director.

Uh… wow.

I’ve been brought onto the show as a guest a number of times now. That’s how I ended up becoming acquainted with Yoshizawa-san.

He helped me out of a jam before, and now he’s been offering me guidance.
Helped you out of a jam, eh? I see…

It wasn’t much, you don’t need to make a big deal out of—Wait, you mean the guy who grabbed you, not the dude who stole your seat on the subway. Uhh… Yeah, that makes more sense.

So, what were you two up to?
Oh, right! I was just about to share some exciting news. It’s nothing to keep secret, so I may as well spill it now. About that summer competition I mentioned to you before?

Music: Alright

This only feels like the beginning to me, though.
Isn’t you club’s team considered to be quite prestigious? And you’re their representative? I must say, that’s extremely impressive.
Thank you! I’ll do my best to make everyone proud.
I’ll be cheering you on as well.

He’ll commit a murder in your honor, how sweet.

Ah, I have an idea—since all three of us are here, why don’t we go somewhere as a group? We can call it our little celebration for Yoshizawa-san’s success.
That would be wonderful! Does that work for you, Hamiru-senpai?
*nod*
That settles it. Would you mind if I chose the place? There’s a wonderful little café I know about…
Of course! Lead the way!

Is this just gonna be the place you took me that one time where we got harassed by your fans and then I outsmarted them by—
If you finish that sentence, I’ll slit your throat!

I have to prevent my body from getting too cold, since the meet’s coming up rather soon.

Good point. Well, some people say coffee can cool you off, even when hot, so I try to avoid that too.

I swear I saw you eating fried sweet bread on TV just the other day…
It’s all part of a marketing strategy. That sort of stunt is an easy crowd-pleaser.
You seem to have your own bases covered as well.

Presenting oneself in a favorable light is nothing surprising. More surprising is just how innocent you seem to be.
I’ve been wondering: how do you two know each other?
His social studies class visited the set of a TV show I appeared on.
Ah, that’s right. Second-years got to go to a TV station.
He and I exchanged our opinions during the shoot and his way of thinking intrigued me.
I can definitely see that! Hamiru-senpai’s take on things often helps me as well.
That reminds me, Yoshizawa-san. You had mentioned that he’s been providing you with some guidance.
Yes—like you said, his way of thinking is intriguing. I figured I could benefit from his input.

Getting distinct Jigsaw vibes from Akechi here.

Would you mind if I posed the same question to you that I first asked him?

So, my question was… What do you think of the Phantom Thieves, Yoshizawa-san?
The Phantom Thieves? You mean in the case that they do in fact exist, yes?

Music: Break it Down (Elp Version)

I suspect the Phantom Thieves’ existence isn’t going to be beneficial to society in the long run.
How so?
Well, for example, when someone’s faced with a problem to overcome, I believe they need to do it themselves. Getting help from others is totally fine, but in the end, it takes a person’s initiative to truly create lasting change. If society relied upon a safety net like the Phantom Thieves, I worry that people would stop making a conscious effort. Granted, this depeneds on how severe the problem is, and it’s inaccurate to apply generalizations to an entire population… But I believe a society where everyone simply leaves matters to the Phantom Thieves wouldn’t last for very long.
I see… So, in the sense of a person’s growth, their actions actually hinder it.

In fact, she’s so right that it kind of seems like she’s read the game script and knows the future, because that’s pretty much exactly what happens!

Ah, so you think you should let others come to their own conclusions on the matter.

Uh, something like that…

I didn’t meant to start an argument. I just can’t help myself sometimes. Let’s change the subject to something a bit lighter.

If I’m away from home too late, my parents will begin to worry.
Right, then let’s call it a day. Good luck on your competition.

Yes! Thank you!

After School → Evening

Music: Beneath the Mask

*sweating*
Man, you sure do sweat a lot.

No need to hide the fact. I own the place, remember? I can tell what goes on here just by looking at the tables.

(Middle-Aged Office Worker) That’s what I hear. The driver was acting funny or something. The vice president in our company might’ve been caught up in it. I’m sure it’s chaos in the office.
When are these weird accidents going to end? I don’t feel safe getting into my car anymore.

Good, gently caress cars. No, not like that!

Thanks for the coffee. I’ll just leave what I owe you here, Boss.

At 8 o’clock this morning, a car spun out of control in a highway accident that left four dead.

I haven’t even heard the end of this report yet and I’m already assuming this is Akechi’s fault.

The police intend to press charges for the deaths of the victims against the driver at fault. The man in question had no history of disease and was a driver for restaurant giant “Goodness Food.”

Sounds like it probably was, in fact, Akechi’s fault!

Traffic accidents are scary… You’d better drive safe.

With what license!?

Sweet, there’s curry ingredients.

Gonna make some curry?

No.

Well, not myself, mind you. We never got enough use out of Kawakami’s time-saving services in the original LP, so let’s make good on the promise of them.

I’m about to head home, but… Careful with the stove, all right?

Oh, wait, it’s you… I’m off today, but if you just want housekeeping, I don’t mind. It’s still work, so I’ll head over after I change. Hang on just a bit.

Really? It’s your day off. Jesus, this woman is overworked.

Hm… So, you just want me to make some curry, right?

(Thin-Voiced Woman) Well, I hear those guys are usually more interested in 2D girls…
(Deep-Voiced Woman) We’ll be fine! Once they lock eyes with a couple bombshells like us—
But I hear that guys like that won’t even give the time of day to anyone over twenty!

Hey, Sakai. What do you need this time? Wait… lemme remember… Soothing Soba, right?

Way ahead of you, my man.

I heard it’s a limited-time offer, but I have no idea where it’s being sold. Good thing I have you! You can find it for me, right?

Put that thing away! I don’t want to get arrested for cosplay crimes again!

So we can trade, yes? Yes!?

Come to think of it, I’ve never seeen chilled noodles in the winter… Are chilled noodles sold only during summer then? Even the packaging screams “Summer!”

Based on my manga knowledge, low temperatures mess with the buckwheat… or something.

Anyway, this is fine. Good work! Let’s trade again sometime!

Pretty good new sword for Yusuke, that one.

Let’s see what the deal is with this jazz club Akechi took us to. Why might we want to spend time here?

Places like this’ll help you relax. And talk about things that you’d usually find difficult to [sic?]. Hmm. As the leader of the Phantom Thieves, maybe you can invite one of the members here.

But we’ll still get drunk off the ambience, right? Right???

Hmm, looks like tonight’s cocktail is “Mightini.” “It’s so good that it’ll give you more stamina! Bring your stamina to the next level!” Sounds pretty good!

“Stamina” is generally code for HP in this game’s parlance, so anyone we take here tonight would experience HP gains.

Let’s quickly go into the various effects of the jazz club. First, you get a Confidant boost with the chosen party member, natch. Worth noting that this second tooltip here appears to be mistranslated, as the singer will only ever appear on weekdays. The special double effect cocktail is therefore just served whenever the singer appears.

Based on which day of the week you go to the club, you will be served a different cocktail:
  • Monday: Mightini. The party member will go up 1 level and their maximum HP will increase by 20.
  • Tuesday: Power Fizz. The party member will receive +1 Strength, Endurance, and Luck, and get a random bonus +1 to one of those attributes.
  • Wednesday: Soultini. The party member will go up 1 level and their maximum SP will increase by 10.
  • Thursday: Magic Fizz. The party member will receive +1 Magic, Agility, and Luck, and get a random +1 boost to one of those attributes.
  • Friday: Omni Fizz. The party member will receive +1 to all five attributes, as well as an increase of 10 maximum HP and 5 maximum SP.
  • Saturday: cycles through each of the other five cocktails.
  • Sunday: We’ll go into this later, but… holy poo poo. This is pretty much the entire reason we’ll be engaging with this mechanic, and the reason we’ve been blitzing Tora so quickly to free up our Sunday nights (also just because Tora rules).
Now, it seems like you would want as many double boosted Fridays as possible here, but due to the way the singer scheduling works, which is needlessly complicated (she appears on the first Monday of a month, then the second Tuesday and so on until the fifth Friday), she appears on Fridays the least throughout the game, so Wednesday might win out. Or, really, we could just ignore the stat boosts period because this game isn’t actually that hard!

The other thing I just learned from the random article I’m sourcing for this is that the stat boosts carry over into NG+, which seems… insane. Whatever!

We’re actually just going to balk at the cover charge and get the gently caress out of here! 3,000 yen for 20 HP!? What a rip-off!

Next thing we’ll do tonight is check out the secondhand clothes store.

We have eight pieces to sell, and we offload everything.

220 points should be more than enough!

We buy the Idaten Belt, which gives Auto-Masukukaja to its wearer, and one of the Clothing Grab Bags, which gives us four pieces of random used clothes. Sure, why not?

We equip everything we got onto our party.

*chuckle* As do I, of course.

Let’s spend time with Mishima tonight. For real. No more diversions this time.

Oh, right! You need to prepare for your next move, right? I’ve been doing the same, actually. Preparing for what, you ask? I could tell you, if you have the time.

You really wanna know, huh? I think you’ll like it! Anyway, let’s head over to the diner! It’s lame just standing around here.

Moon Rank 5: Part 84

Music: My Homie

What activities?
…Still keeping up the charade, huh?
Exactly. Fuckin’ ixnay, dude.
Well, whatever. I already know how it’s been. The Phan-Site has been crazy lately thanks to you! But first, what do you see on the table before you?
Well, I see you’ve got a book on security techniques, and if I look ever-so-slightly to my right, I notice—Oh! poo poo! That’s a gun!

It cost me a lot of money…

…I’m sure it did. What is happening right now?
I heard they had to shut down production because people kept mistaking it for the real thing.
Not only is that *not* an explanation, it honestly makes it worse. You do realize that’s worse, right?
You don’t need to freak out. A military buff in the Phandom suggested I get it. I thought, you know, I’m the sole admin of the Phan-Site, so I might need the protection.
God… fine, sure, that’s… some logic, I guess… Can you at least take it off the table before someone sees it?
Enough about the model gun! I wanted to talk to you about targets. We need to go after big, flashy people, right?
Something about the way you’re using “flashy” is upsetting me, and I’m not too sure about this “we” business, but sure, yes. If I was hypothetically a Phantom Thief, that would be accurate.
Well, just leave it to me! I’ll get all the info we need, even if it means putting myself at risk!
There’s that “we” again… Also, please don’t do that.

Mishima seems extra motivated…

I’ll say!

By the way, um… do I look any different to you?

I’m going to be polite and not answer that.

People keep telling me it seems like I’ve changed recently. I guess I can’t hide my newfound confidence, huh? My true worth will finally—

Akiyama-kun…

Music: Suspicion

(Akiyama) Long time no see, zero. Y’know, we’ve been sitting just over there the whole time, but we didn’t even notice you sitting here!
(Short-Haired High Schooler) You’re exactly the same as you were back in middle school, Mishima.
(Thin-Browed High Schooler) Yeah. Once a zero, always a zero.
Y-Yeah, haha…
You haven’t changed your cell number, have you?
Huh? N-No, I haven’t…
Then why didn’t you come to our hangout? All our ex-classmates were there, y’know! Oh, wait… Nobody even remembered you existed! Can’t invite a guy you can’t remember, right?
R-Right, ahaha…

Uh, is that a gun on the table?
No way that nerd has a gun. It’s probably just a toy Megatron or something.

C’mon guys, let’s go.

It’s not what it looks like… Okay? You know that one guy in every class who ends up being the butt of all the jokes? That guy was me…

Mishima, I’m sorry, but that’s exactly what that looked like.
But not any more. I’ve changed. I can help the Phantom Thieves…

I’m not going to be that boring guy anymore…! ……

Sorry. It’s getting late, though. Let’s head home.

See you later.

Music: Break it Down (Elp Version)

Just so you know, I’m going to work even harder. Not just in managing the Phan-Site, but also help make [sic] the Phantom Thieves household names! I’m gonna do everything in my power, so you can just sit back and relax!

What…? N-No, not really…

Okay, I better go. But we’ll talk again soon, okay?

Music: Beneath the Mask (Instrumental Version)

We only get one curry because it’s Kawakami making it instead of us, but still, saved some time.

All right. I’ll see you later.

Chapter 80: 7/12: Student Counsel President (New)

Sixth birthday in a row spent Let’s Playing Persona 5! And here’s to six more! AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH

Anon: Can I make a request here?

Early Morning

Music: Beneath the Mask (Instrumental Version)

(Vegetable-Loving Male Student) A summer festival, huh… How can anyone eat so much fatty food when it’s so hot out…
Man, you just don’t get it. It’s BECAUSE it’s hot out that we eat all that meat. Come on, let’s go check it out. I’ll treat you to a skewer.
A summer festival, huh… You think they’ll have any A5 beef there? Well, you should worry about finals first. Once those are over, it’ll be summer vacation, so stay focused!

(Lighthearted Guy) Yeah, they’ve really taken off since the whole Kamoshida thing. The legend of the Phantom Thieves started at OUR school! We’re practically one of them!
And who can’t relate to what they’re doing? Punishing corrupt adults up to no good—the police should take notes.

Early Morning → Morning

Music: So Boring

Behind Kamoshida’s arrest are the “Phantom Thieves,” the mysterious group that changes people’s hearts. If I recall, there were similar rumors back during that business with Kamoshida-kun. Help the weak and crush the strong… Truly a modern legend of the gentleman thief. In the long history of humans, the gentleman thief has been seen briefly during times of turmoil. Now then, please look at this picture. Hamiru-kun.

He did something during the Sengoku period that had him and his family boiled to death.

Oden wouldn’t be oden if it wasn’t boiled!

Do you know what he did?

That’s correct. Ishikawa Goemen is Japan’s most famous thief… He’s very popular, and some called him a gentleman thief. By the way, the Goemon bath comes from his name.

Goemon’s exploits have been documented in many forms of media, like kabuki and novels.

Maaku gains Knowledge +1.

However, it’s not actually clear whether or not Goemon was indeed a gentleman thief. Rebellion against Hideyoshi, whose campaign had failed; propaganda by the government to sully his name… The gentleman thief Goemon may be no more than an illusion made by varying motivations. In actuality, most heroes and gentleman thieves throughout history are something like that.
Let’s make sure people don’t think we’re just an illusion. But before that, you need to study for the exams that are starting tomorrow.

Morning → After School

Music: Ideal and the Real

I know the phrase “counseling session” can make some people nervous, but don’t be. Considering you’re the student council president, I’d rather they didn’t force you to come here at all, actually.
Well, I was advised to come, but I still chose to do it on my own.
Oh, good! Glad to hear it.
But please, there’s no need to be concerned about my being here. Feel free to discuss anything with me.

Heh, you’re sounding more like the counselor in here than I am.

Oh, not at all—in fact, quite the opposite. I’m actually a bit of a mess, and I always have to turn to others for help.
Well you sure had me fooled. Even still, getting help isn’t a bad thing at all. In fact, it’s wonderful that you have a support system.
Indeed… Especially lately. I feel like I can’t do anything right by myself nowadays.

I’ve come to understand all too well that it’s a bad idea taking on more of a burden than one should.
You really do seem like someone with a mature sense of responsibility. However, that may be why people around you—especially the adults who should be protecting you—rely on you so much.
Adults… who should be protecting me?

Ah… You live alone with your older sister. I see.

Honestly, it only felt like the norm to me.

…Do you still remember them? Your parents.
Yes. Not as much about my mother admittedly, but my father, without a doubt.

“A bit”?

Is that so… And are you doing okay now? Is your support system adequate?
It’s not as if I have a team of employees or anything, but I do have people that I’m able to rely upon well. Of course, I’d never think of them as replacements for my father or my sister. No one could replace either of them.

No one can ever be replaced… yet we need to keep pushing towards our future. Should anything come up that you want help with, I’ll be there to support you… Though my skills are pretty limited.

Aww, how nice for Makoto.

Music: Tokyo Daylight

I’d be pretty sad if the leader of the Phantom Thieves got bad grades.

It looks like they saved me again. I guess I’ll become a fan of the Phantom Thieves, after all.
(Energetic Student) I hope Akechi-kun isn’t too shocked from all the backlash he’s been getting online… I’ll still believe in Akechi-kun, though! I mean, he’s so handsome! Like, ridiculously handsome!

I mean… fair.

Now it’s safer to go to Shibuya.
(Foodie Girl) Speaking of which, the Melon Pan sold at Yon-Germain Bakery is on fire too! It’s so delicious, the flavor’ll bring you back to life! Or at least from the brink of death.
Whoa, that good? It’s just bread, but I guess I shouldn’t underestimate it…

That’s the spirit!

I’ve seen it in Shibuya before too! It’s like, totally cool.
I hope they keep it up. I’ve been rooting for them this whole time!
Aren’t they incredible? I hear they’re really gaining momentum.
By the way, this is a drat good drawing. Is Hamiru a Phanboy?
I think our popularity’s rising! We’re really starting to get famous!

I suppose I’ll ask you this too, just in case. Who do you think will be their next target?

Oh… Okay. Sorry, I probably shouldn’t have asked you out of the blue like that.

Maaku, don’t be so rude! You came up to her, not the other way around!

Well, if they want a bigger target, maybe the government? That’d be really interesting. I have no idea what they’ll do next. I’m a bit excited, but it’s also kind of scary.

Maybe laying it on a little thick there, Maaku…

I see… So rather than acting right away, they’re carefully observing society for now? It might also be that the criminals have been scared into hiding by the Phantom Thieves.

She says she knit her boyfriend a scarf, which made him super happy. Maybe that’s you, Ikesugi-kun?
(Handsome Student) Ah, stop it… That scarf freaked me out, so I threw it away. That’s only a coincidence.
Maybe you should ask that genius detective Akechi-kun to get to the bottom of this? Juuust kidding.

Oh, wait… When I marry him, I’ll be Yumeko Ikesugi… *giggle* I’ll post online about anyone who gets in my way. And they’ll bleed! It’ll be a blood storm!

Storm of blood, born from blood of our fallen brothers…

(Energetic First-Year) People are all about them right now. I totally voted “YES” in that online poll!
Yeah, I think Akechi-kun might’ve jumped the gun a little by saying they’re dangerous.
They should team up and take out Tokyo’s trash together!

You’ll get your wish eventually! Sort of!

Heh… Who would have known that Kaneshiro had that up his sleeve…? I can hear the people’s cries for a hero to fight evil… But for now, let me rest a bit… Heh.

Smashing the mafia in one night was a difficult feat, even for someone like me. I can hear the people’s cries for a hero to fight evil… But for now, let me rest a bit… Heh.

Heroes like them must get all the girls. Maybe I’ll quit basketball to join the Phantom Thieves.
(Intense Soccer Player) The Phantom Thieves are just a fad! You’re not seriously thinking of quitting the team, are you!?
I just don’t think it’s gonna work out. There aren’t that many talented people I can get to join our team.

Thank you, but the Phantom Thieves are not accepting applicants at this time.

(Kind Faculty Member) Be careful not to spread weird rumors. Students should concentrate on studying, anyway.
Oh, crap! It’s almost finals! I don’t want to fail and have to take remedial classes.

Sounds like you’re screwed if you’re only thinking about it the day before.

I wonder if the Phantom Thieves can steal test questions. Hahaha! Nah, that’d be impossible!

I’ve just been focusing on our team lately, but it’s about time I get some studying done.
(Female Volleyball Player) I decide to go to a cram school. We can’t afford to waste any time playing around…

(Refined Male Student) I’ll pass. Finals are soon, and summer’s a good time to overtake my competition and reach the top.
Gentle Male Student) Taking entrance exams sucks. It doesn’t help that the teachers say they know who’ll pass and fail.
One cannot rest on his laurels if he wishes to stay at the top. We must always strive and work hard.

“Final exam schedule: July 13th-16th. Results will be posted on July 19th.” “Aim for the Olympics!” “High hopes for Yoshizawa’s performance!”

(Bothered Student) Hey! It’s almost summer break! I’m going to spend it by going out and having as much fun as I can!

He’s been talking about Egypt and stuff… But is he really working on deals with people overseas?
(Young-Looking Woman) Is it because of Medjed? That thing on the internet, right?
Yeah, that! He was getting frustrated about being stuck at work since he can’t take his computer home anymore.

It’s a little hackneyed (pun intended) that people instantly start bringing up Medjed now that the Kaneshiro “arc” is done. Seed this stuff in the writing little better, folks!

(Veteran Station Attendant) Yes, that’s good. Though I’m afraid something awful’s happened.
Oh… A jumper?
Yes. I overheard the police. Seems he was fired from his job and didn’t know what to do… Something about his client list getting leaked, so he was let go. The world can be rough sometimes.

I see! So you’re relieved… for the moment. However, he still seems to be expressing some discontent about how long the arrest took! And that concludes our on-the-spot coverage.

I see. So you think it isn’t over yet, hm? It appears that today’s youth are growing impatient with the lax police investigation procedures! And that concludes our on-the-spot coverage.

I see. No comment then, hm? He is so pessimistic about the country’s future that he sees no point in sharing his opinion! And that concludes our on-the-spot coverage.

*grunt* This too is thanks to the power of the Sun God and his blessing of the Phantom Thieves.
Um, I don’t mean to dispute you, Sun God, but I thought your power was weak during the rainy season?
Th-The power of the Sun God cuts through the darkness! Heal your battle wounds, my apostles…

(Veteran Pick-Up Artist) I’m the romantic phantom thief, here to steak your heart… The Love Thief of Pounding Hearts!
Love Thief… of Pounding Hearts…? Isn’t that a bit corny?
Idiot, that’s the point! Just give it a try!

I completely support the Phantom Thieves now. Hopefully they bring more bad apples to justice!
(Modest Housewife) I can only imagine what the police are doing. They haven’t seemed very reliable.
I agree. Although, I’m sure they’re reevaluating how they handle crime prevention.

The police? Prevent crime? That’d be a first.

We get our Psi card. I choose not to ask for him to make another card because I don’t have any good ones for him to duplicate at the moment, unfortunately.

Everyone runs away as soon as they see my face, but I’m not really sure why… Hey, can I ask you something? Do you think it’s possible that someone’s personality could change overnight…? No, sorry. Never mind…

Haha… I don’t think I’ve done anything that would make people run away like that. Hey, can I ask you something? Do you think it’s possible that someone’s personality could change overnight…? No, sorry. Never mind…

(Stylish Male Student) Don’t trust the cops. The real calling card was posted online!
I guess it doesn’t really matter who did it, as long as they’re getting rid of the bad guys.
You’re so nonchalant, as usual…

(Sad Old Man) What are the police doing, letting those fishy Phantom Thieves steal their thunder!?
He was still arrested in the very end. It all worked out, didn’t it?
Come on… Can you really trust someone who hides their face like that!?

The description is right, you really are a sad old man!

(Radio Announcer) Mr. Kaneshiro has been taken into custody for questioning. The investigation is ongoing.
Looks like the police are finally doing their job. Well, another crook like him will come along sooner or later. That’s just the way it is.

(Gentle-Looking Mother) Hmm… I’m not sure. It seems like they only fight the bad guys.
(Lazy Dog) Woof! Woof!
Kotaro says he likes them!
Oh, really? They must be the good guys then.

Yeah, I’m not doing too shabby. People really fall for these “too-good-to-be-true” stories. Just butter ‘em up a little, and it’s a cinch. There are so many gullible people everywhere!

The thugs in Shibuya are mostly gone, so maybe I’ll wait around there to pick up some fares.
(Taxi Driver) Those “Phantom Thieves” got rid of the bad guys, right? What are they supposed to be, superheroes?
One of my fares, he was pretty young, said they’re more dependable than the police.

“Kept ranting about catching some fellow named ‘Dobu,’ as well.”

Hahaha, maybe. It’s embarrassing for the police, having someone do their job for them.

It’s up to you to protect what’s really important. You can’t take risks in these dangerous times. But what can you do to protect yourself? Don’t worry—our security systems are the answer! Please contact our company for installation services!

(Serious-Looking Lawyer) And thanks to the internet, now everyone knows the police were just full of talk.
Now that the police have lost face, the mass media will swing over to the Phantom Thieves. Phantom Thieves, huh? Looks like things’ll get pretty busy for us soon.

(Kichijoji-Native Girl) Just ace the next one! Wanna go study somewhere?
Oh, let’s go to the pancake shop near the station! There should be plenty of seats on a weekday.
I can already tell there’s gonna be no studying… Not that I care. Kichijoji gets featured on TV a lot, but it’s really a lot of chain stores that get crowded on the weekends.

(Doting Father) Hahaha, isn’t it great? Nothing else like it in the summer!
Can we go somewhere together this summer? …Oh, never mind. Thanks, Dad!

I want to take some cute pictures of you!
(Bobbed-Hair Girl) But, Mommy, you already took lots of pictures. I wanna go hooome…
(Mild-Mannered Dad) I have to agree with Mami. I’m beat after walking all over Kichijoji… I’m sure all your mom friends will still be green with envy once they see the pictures you took.
Shush! Just do as I say! We’re almost done! My reputation is at stake here. I have to be the coolest mom on social media!

Oh, I hate this!

It might just be a whim of youth, but there are times when naïve justice is called for.
(Stocky Man) At first I thought it was a bunch of kids pulling pranks, but now I’m impressed. I wonder what they’re going to do next. In fact… I wish they’d bring a change of heart to someone I know.
Even you think of stuff like that? Mind if I ask whose heart?
Huh? Oh… It’s my wife. She’s scary! The woman’s a fiend, I tell ya! Haha!

Take my wife’s heart… Please!

Music: Butterfly Kiss

I don’t want you collapsing when you take my medicine. So, what are you here for today?

Now that Takemi has some Takemedic-All-Zs, we’re going to buy a few, just in case we’re ever caught without Mediarama. Also, three Relax Gels, because we were running low on those.

But we’re really here for a clinical trial, so let’s get to it. I’m not afraid of the sick juice!

I’ve been really busy lately with all my new patients, but… What the heck? Oh, everything’s set up already.

Oh, that old lady from earlier forgot something… I wonder if she’s still outside…

Death Rank 6: Part 37

Music: Alright (Elp Version)

…It was right in front of me, so…
Oh my! You’re a shy one, aren’t you?
I-I’m not shy.
My neighbor speaks highly of you. She says your medicines are better than those at the big hospitals.

I don’t trust Big Doctor! I want some shady lowlife to sell me homeopathic remedies! And also brain pills! But thanks anyway, dearie. It’s nice having a good town doctor around here. See you soon.

What’s the matter, resenting your sudden popularity? Well, too bad. This is my revenge for the abominable cough syrup.
Ever since that girl and her dad showed up, they’ve been talking to anyone who’ll listen about how amazing I am. I’ve started getting a ton more patients… and with that, a lot of crazy requests. I had to give an endoscopy to a cat… and I even had a police unit rush in and ask me to defuse a bomb…
Those don’t sound like your field of expertise…
Yeah, that’s what I said!
But, come on. You must be enjoying the adulation on some level, right?
…All I want is to complete my drug. I’m the Plague. That’s all I’m suited to be.
Really? Because honestly, it suits you.
Huh?

…Well, you’re entitled to your opinion.

I think it’s a little late for me to try to be a “town doctor,” though…

Oh yeah, about those clinical trials… With so many new patients, it’s taking longer to analyze the data, so I’ll need to catch up.

What are you getting at?
…Just that the medicine’s going to be a bit… stronger this time.
Ah, poo poo!

Oh, by the way… that girl who came in seems to be making a full recovery. Hopefully she can return to school soon… It’d be a load off my mind.
*barely contained grinning*
For that look on your face, you’re getting a double dose today.

I feel like cooperating in that shady clinical trial has increased my Guts

Maaku gains Guts +1.

Okay, thanks for your hard work.

I know it was probably a lot to handle. Considering I doubled the dosage and halved the activation time… But we’re so close. We’re right at the end of all this—I can feel it. I’ll need you to stick around just a little bit longer. I hope you can handle it.

If you’re that excited about it, maybe I’ll just give you a dose of everything and see how you hold up. Well, I’ve got some catching up to do. I have to process today’s data as quickly as possible.

After School → Evening

Music: Beneath the Mask

Guess I should head home…

Oh boy, more crosswords!

Music: Everyday Days

That was probably the easiest one so far.

Oh, wow… Even I couldn’t figure that one out.

Oh, shut up. I can’t tell if you’re patronizing me or if you’re really just that dumb.

Maaku gains Knowledge +1.

Music: Beneath the Mask

Kaneshiro has admitted that he gave orders to his subordinates to carry out crimes.

That fiend!

However, countless people fell victim to his scams. Investigating every single scam will take time.
Oh, he really scammed a lot of people. I guess we’ll just leave the rest to the police.

We need a Fortune Persona for hanging out with Chihaya tonight, but we don’t have one on hand (nor have we ever obtained one through negotiation or Fusion). To the Velvet Room!

Music: Aria of the Soul

We make Clotho from Anzu and Setanta.

Spin and spin, the thread of fate… I am the mask which can see your past…

Clotho is the youngest of the three Fates, also known as the Moirae Sisters, who control the metaphorical “threads” of life of every mortal. Clotho is the one who spins the thread, while her older sisters Lachesis and Atropos measure and cut it, respectively. You might remember them as those old ladies from Hercules. Even the gods are technically mortal, so even they fear the powers of the sisters. Clotho, as the one who spun each thread, is able to make major decisions about each person’s life, such as when they are born.

While I’m here, I’m also going to use the Electric Chair to make some goodies, such as this Prayer Ring to get a Kouha-granting accessory from Nigi Mitama.

Also, this new weapon for Morgana from Pisaca.

Rude, but fair.

Hm…? There was a woman last time too… Wait… is that…? A-Anyway, please be careful… Well then, what would you like to do today…?

I’ve been waiting for you! Let’s do the verification test already! I will surely figure out your trick!

Oh, I was just about to do a reading for a client, so please stay and watch…

Fortune Rank 2: Part 69

Music: What’s Going On?

Hello there, Mifune-sensei. I can’t wait for today’s session. Your last prediction was practically perfect. By the way, um… who is this boy?

I’m her parole officer, here to make sure she doesn’t scam anyone else.
Ignore him. This is just my… apprentice. Yeah, something like that.
Apprentice? I hope you know some magic tricks you can teach me, because I want nothing to do with learning this brand of chicanery.
Silence!
Whatever, lady. At least when I steal from people I don’t leave them thinking I did them a favor. Wait, *do* I do that? I need to think about this…
Again, just ignore him.
I’m not sure what he’s muttering about, but it’s nice to see he’s okay with working for a woman. In my line of work, that’s unheard of. One of my male coworkers just stole all the credit for a project I poured my soul into… And my boss said it was just the natural order of things for a woman like me.

How terrible!

That’s why I’m thinking about leaving and starting my own business. I’ve been planning this for some time, but I’ve been worried about finding a foothold in the market…

In that case, let’s ask the tarot! Show us the truth, O divine power…

I’ve seen it all. The cards are in reverse… Your business is doomed to failure.
Is there anything I can do!?
I’m sorry, but no. It is inescapable.
*ahem*
Apprentice! What are your thoughts? Surely changing such a meager fate as this is child’s play for you!
I am technically a child, but okay.
This woman’s male-dominated work environment is crushing her, and her business is doomed to fail! What say you!?
I guess it’s hopeless…
Nah, that’s stupid.
Huh?
Just do it. But, uh, try succeeding instead of failing.
But… this fate is inescapable! She cannot possibly—
I believe in you, total stranger.
You’re right! I can do it! I’ll tear the industry down and build a new one on top!
I mean, if we’re tearing something down maybe it should be, like, capitalism, instead of just trying to make yourself the best hashtag girlboss—
I will be the oppressor! I will be the boot! Bow down before me, peasants!
Oh, nope, she’s not listening.
See you later! I have Pinkertons to hire!

The cards will surely back me up on this. I don’t even need to read them to know that. But I’ll check just in ca--

How!? You did it again! You changed her fate!
Is that bad? Sorry, I didn’t mean to.
Have you been deceiving me? Are you actually psychic? Did you use your powers to change the order of the cards?
Lady, I can’t even get you to give me a refund.

Yes… That has to be it. That’s the only way this could happen… Fate cannot be changed. Fate is absolute… That is how it must be.

Fate can be changed. Fortune-telling is bullshit, and also determinism can eat my rear end.
But if you’re right… then how can I keep selling Holy Stones…?
Please stop selling those things.

…A-Anyway! You’ve changed the flow of destiny twice now, both times coming before my very eyes…

This verification has been most helpful!

I can sense Chihaya’s intense motivation…

You’ll come back again soon, right? Promise me!

I’ll think about coming over the next time I want to feel morally superior.

Well, that’s enough for today. Good night!

Music: Break it Down (Elp Version)

So I’m going to get right to my question! You’re currently standing right in front of your house, correct!?

If everyone could reverse their fate as easily as flipping a table, life would be easy!

Okay, talk to you later.
