I’m about to graduate, so I’m of course spending my time working on this instead of studying for my final exam, writing my term paper, or finishing my final portfolio!  Anon: dunno what they want. By the way, there are rumors that the Phantom Thieves took down the perp this time—Kaneshiro. I remember their name with that bit on Madarame as well as the incident in May. Looks like we succeeded in changing Kaneshiro’s heart! A lot of people are talking about the Phantom Thieves too! Morning → After School Music: Alright   Hell yeah, we took down Kaneshiro! Everyone’s been talkin’ about it since the police announcement! Unfortunately, it seems that the police are claiming all the credit for the arrest… Fuckin’ cops. Ann, we swooped in on an ongoing investigation, basically beat the guy up until he confessed his crimes, then peaced out, leaving someone else holding the bag. I’m pretty sure I just described the fun part of being a cop. It wasn’t very difficult, either. Right… It is pretty awesome that we’ve left the cops with all the boring paperwork to do and none of the action. Almost brings a tear to my eye. Good work, team. …Anyway… Everything’s coming up #Millennials! This is quite the turnaround. All of a sudden, people are expressing their long-standing belief in us. Well, that’s simply impossible given how unpopular we were just a few days ago. The masses are clearly fickle and eager to save face. Hope that doesn’t come back around to bite us! Also neat: this song is sung by the same woman who sings all of Persona 5’s vocal tracks, Lyn. Considering that the woman singing this song in-game doesn’t look all that unlike Lyn (which I am judging primarily off like, hair colour because everyone here looks anime), I think it’s fair to say that this is actually supposed to be her. Nifty.  You think they take song requests? I want to see if they know anything from Mingus.   Work and obligations take me to quite a few restaurants and cafés, but this place is a little more special to me. I guess you could call it my go-to place. Do you have anywhere like that? Honestly, I’m only about 40% lucid at the moment, so I’m not even sure I’m capable of telling a good lie right now. Those words could just be taken as you shifting blame to this other person, you know. I mean, yes, I am blaming them. But also, it’s the truth. …… You could be lying… Again, no, not really. …But it doesn’t really make sense for you to make up such a ridiculously implausible story simply to shift the blame, does it? And this tale, however fantastical, is so far entirely congruent with the facts of the case… There are two possibilities: either you’ve simply been trying to confuse me with your lies… Or everything you’ve stated is true. You’ve figured out that either I’m lying or I’m telling the truth? Wow, great work. We’ve been in here for like two hours. A weird creepy teen grows up to be a successful salesman because he has Mara as a persona and it somehow makes him charismatic, apparently. Even leaving aside the Japanese legal system's love of confessions (voluntary or otherwise), in the cases the Phantom Thieves have been involved in so far it would be easy to corroborate it with other testimony and hard evidence. It'd be a bit like the narrator in the Tell-Tale Heart, driven mad by guilt, directs the cops who didn't even suspect them to tear up the floorboards and reveal the crime. I do think this does cause issues for the prosecution of Shido, where he can't bring a lot of hard evidence to his confession and his collaborators are powerful people who can make inconvenient facts/evidence disappear.

Yeah, basically. Shido is well enough protected by his powerful followers and by actually having somewhat covered his tracks that he can't be nailed down even having confessed, which is sort of what you're looking for. Outside of that, the Phantom Thieves' confessions not actually being accepted wouldn't really make sense, because there's loads of hard evidence to back up the confessions. I think if Okumura had lived, that might have been how that could have gone, though. Dude overworked his employees? Oh, perish the thought. That's sooooooo unusual. Like, they're not going to arrest him for wage theft (though they should), so I'm not sure what would actually have come of that.

Wasn't Okumura involved in the conspiracy? I think he was connected enough to point the finger at Shido for the mental shutdown cases, which would have been a problem for them even if they didn't have the hard evidence to actually make it stick. Beyond that, I don't think he was actually expecting to go to jail for his actions, he was just hit by an attack of conscience and was going to quit his position as CEO.

It feels like Okumura is sort of played up as a quasi Elon Musk figure, a guy who's lauded as both a business genius and panned as a gigantic rear end in a top hat who naturally paints a target on his back. It is a bit of a running theme that society at large is chasing a bunch of distractions to avoid asking (and answering) hard questions about where it's going. It is easier to ignore the bruises on the students, volleyball is a tough sport and besides look at the trophies he's won! Madarame is an artistic genius, mastering a billion genres effortlessly! Big Bang Burgers is obviously the cause of all of Japan's problems with workforce boundaries, if you take out that smug rear end in a top hat Okumura clearly everything will be fine! It's not an endemic issue at large, which is why I'm voting for that bald guy who made a bunch of vague promises.

About to post the new update. It's probably silly to even mention, but I still feel the need to do so just in case: this update, which I recorded about two months ago, features the scene in Mishima's Rank 5 Confidant where he brings a model gun to the diner. Given... everything going on right now, this may feel a bit inappropriate. I have consciously avoided making any joking references to anything resembling recent events (and would have done so even if those tragedies had not happened, because that poo poo just categorically isn't funny), but I don't know if I can really get away with making jokes around a gun at all in the present moment, even if I avoided even joking about actually using it. Basically, I'm just saying that if you feel extra sensitive to the subject right now, maybe skip that part. It's right at the end, so you don't need to look for where to resume. I don't want to upset anyone and I tried to avoid doing so, but I always second-guess myself in times like these so I wanted to be sure so people can just enjoy the LP. Thanks.
