2045 is the one on netflix? I didn't get more than one episode in because the setting was cyborgs in the desert which made no sense for what was essentially a city noir vibe.

E: GitS was about what it means to be human in a world where humans are basically (and litterally! OOO SYMBOLISM) machines in the hive that is a city.

He's not even that. He's a literal child in an adult's body who got into fascism by reading a bunch of 1930s pulp adventures to escape from his awful, awful life and deciding he wanted to be Conan the Barbarian. Kudelia is a lib ally, even if she's unusually self-aware about her powerlessness and sympathetic to the real rebels.

gundam 00 is up on the gundam yt, and man its still pretty good remembering all the stuff i liked before S2 ruined any joy i had of the show. Graham Aker top tier Char clone, and protag rival. Allelujah Haptism, and Lockon Stratos are some of the best gundam show names u will find.

S2 of GITS 2045 was really dumb. There are no cool stand-alone episodes like in S1, and the post-human plot is so messy. At least the final episode introduces some interesting ideas; if only the rest of the show had actually done a better job of setting that up it might have been kind of cool. However, I don't see that the baddies plan in any way addresses actual material concerns.

So people just walk around in the real world but living at least half inside their own personal fantasy. How are resources divided in the real world? Who feeds people? If half the country is dreaming that they are the prime minister, who actually makes decisions that affect the real world?

How do people meaningfully interact with one another? It seems to me doublethink would have to work very hard to keep peoples personal fantasies from being in conflict with another, so much so that cooperating on a complex project would be practically impossible.

It looked for a little while like they were implying that people would just literally live dream lives in boxes that saw to their needs, similar to the one Makoto wakes up in, a pretty famous philosophical concept, but then they abandon that in the very next sentence and I think the implication is that they were just shelters from the smart gas. Good thing they thought of preparing 3 million of those since the AE used gas and not a nuke of their own.

I don’t know much about it other than the scene where the huge robot slowly flies up with it leg straight out then just cuts the rockets and falls to smash said leg directly on a monster. which to be fair is a solid sell on the show being good

finally got around to watching My Dress Up Darling and wasn’t expecting it to go as hard as it does at all, and I think now it’s my favorite anime of the whole year.

the attention to detail in its illustration & animation is insane, and it serves the intent of showing real love for all of its subjects. I can’t even recall any other show with a more sincere love for all of its characters and subjects than this one. there’s no hint of resentment or ironic detachment, it’s achingly earnest. a love letter to art, craft, fandom, and everything beautiful, funny & awkward about adolescent romance.

this show loves everything down to each square millimeter, to the point where you almost feel like it loves the audience too.

I think I actually posted that screenshot in an old anime thread. It was from a show called Senjuushi (The Thousand Noble Musketeers) which was not exactly a good show. That image is the highlight of the whole thing.
The premise is pretty much Touken Ranbu but instead of historical swords being brought to life as boys it's old guns but minus the large budget and quality of Touken Ranbu.

Yes. The one major caveat is that there's a lot of extremely horny teen stuff, but it's taken seriously enough that it works to heighten the romance. It doesn't feel exploitative, it's how teenagers feel. There's a real depth underneath the surface relationships that almost feels like a universal romance. No detail is too minute to not be treated with care, in the foreground & background, on characters and clothes, in urban or lush environments. Everything is beautiful. The show loves everything.

The other caveat is I was high while watching it, so i was probably feeling it a lot deeper than your normal viewing experience. I dunno. It reminded me a lot of my friends and why I love them.

I've also been watching To Your Eternity, and this is the hardest poo poo I've ever had to sit through. Every 3 episodes is the new most emotionally devastating moment ever. I had to see who is the sadist that wrote this and - of course - it's the same woman who did A Silent Voice. Of course it is.

Haven't watched it, but the source material is pretty good. It has a kind of weird emotional arc.

i enjoyed the first little arc or two but felt it jumped the trauma shark and started feeling pretty poorly paced. it became sort of a one note show. shapeshifter makes friend, friend dies or suffer traumatically, shapeshifter internalizes this experience and can transform into them like it’s a video game

I did feel like it was getting a little repetitive, but then it hooked me back in by coming out of left field with the trip to libertarian island.

Yeah that whole arc was great. The show really does border on trauma porn sometimes but I think generally it falls more on the sincere pathos side of the scale. Also I read spoilers about what happens further down in the manga and oh boy does it go to some wild places
