As someone who has been consuming way too much manga/anime for way too long, there has definitely been a major change over the years in how many badass women and girls are depicted in shonen stuff. Probably generally corresponding to Japan getting more conservative around gender stuff.

There's also a really noticeable difference in things like sexualization- back in the 80s and 90s fanservice consisted of incidental stuff that didn't necessarily distract from the action, whereas now it's expected to grab the audience's face and cram it in some girl's tits/rear end in the middle of an important scene, to make sure you don't forget that tits and rear end exist.

The whole thing literally is just companies catering directly to the shittiest members of the audience because they want those guys to go out and buy merchandise of their waifus.

Anime/manga were never a bastion of high art, mind you, but they've become extremely focused on a particular demographic with a particular set of attitudes over the past couple of decades, where there was slightly more variety and less "Gotta make sure the lads' boners stay up!" before then.

Kono Healer Mendokusai, literally This Healer’s a Handful, localized as Don’t Hurt Me, My Healer!

It’s about a magical healer who’s mostly just kind of mean and the straight man adventurer she’s kind of mean to

my posts are as bad the Current Releases review of Gone Girl

Its pretty wild to say that shonen jump as a platform can’t be expected to have its series feature strong female characters and wanting SJ comics to have better female representation is a useless venture, given that shonen jump is currently publishing a series about a teen girl learning rakugo to spite the man who ruined her fathers dreams, witha very well written main character, and it consistently places in the top half of the rankings

Really loved what I've read of that series so far and agree that it's something that should and can change but I also think the point made that posting about the problem instead of reading something better or writing letters to Shueisha is little more than chasing one's own tail is a valid one.

Next time you make a post like this I suggest also giving examples.

For example, I hear that Keep your Hands off Eizouken!, SSSS Dynazenon and Odd Taxi are shows that I have heard are great but I haven't watched them myself. I would recommend Shadow's House and Way of the House Husband as well as Aggretsuko as things that I have actually seen with my own eyes (the first two I'm just reading the manga of though)

A few recs:
Wave, Listen To Me!: A woman gets into the world of late night local radio after meeting a producer by chance at a bar, expounding at length about her awful ex, and drunkenly giving him permission to broadcast the tirade. Adventures including purported evil spirits, cults, and a massive earthquake ensue. I'd rather recommend the manga, but the anime is on Funimation.

Golden Kamuy: in the early 1900s, A young Ainu woman who has a conflicted relationship with her culture's traditions teams up with a scarred veteran to hunt for a hidden trove of gold that had been gathered by the Ainu people to buy land where they can live without being encroached upon by the Japanese government. Part It's A Mad Mad Mad World ensemble comedy, part exploration of the tensions in pre-imperial Japan, part "what if all the wildest serial killers teamed up to fight the troops who are also serial killers", part softcore gay pornography(I mean this as a compliment, the guys are gorgeous). The manga recently ended, the anime is ongoing, but the anime is the lesser experience.

Teppu: sadly short lived MMA series about a girl who has been effortlessly great at everything in her life meeting a girl who has had to work terrifyingly hard to become as good as she is and immediately despising her. Eyepatch wolf recommended it a while back.

It's fine.
Don't worry about it.
Golden Kamuy has fantastic wildlife drawings, and tasty things made out of their meat. It's a strange, charming, and sad black comedy-drama-adventure. Also lots of very horrific violence, like one of the first chapters a man's face gets clawed off by a bear, for example.

It's also um... got some I think well-intentioned but also pretty iffy writing choices involving the gay characters and one trans character it features. Like I still enjoy it as a comic but it must be said the one trans character is a deliberate combination of Buffalo Bill and Hannibal Lecter. Most of the cast are war criminals, mass murderers, traumatized war veterans, or at the very least scummy thieves, so it doesn't stick out aaaaas much as it might otherwise, but it's sure a thing that holds me back from suggesting the manga or anime the most without reservations.

As far as good animes to watch... The Aquatope on white sand is sweet. Mob Psycho 100 is great to catch up on because the third and final part is coming out soon. Tokyo Revengers is a fun kinda violent time-travel thriller thing. To Your Eternity is intensely sad and pretty. March comes in like a lion is a sad slice of life thing. Osumatsu-san is hilarious. Those are all the recently-watched things in my Crunchroll queue I've finished or seen enough of to feel comfortable recc-ing besides super obvious choices.

That character was based on Ed Gein IIRC. Theres doubt on if Gein was trans or not. Of course all this happened 70 years ago so things change.

She would eat human body parts and at one point she even does the "FfFfFfFfFf" tongue sound out of the "Fava beans and a nice Chianti" scene while thinking of eating someone again. So the Hannibal influence is pretty obvious.

She consumed young women under the assumption it would help her feminize, and that the body part she ate would rejuvenate that part of her body. They don't straight up say she's trans, but she was AMAB and in the present of the story she's always referred to as "she" and everyone is accepting of that. It's definitely not an Ed Gein scenario. The guy who crafts outfits and furniture out tanned human skin he looted is the closer Gein analog.

You could argue about whether or not the Buffalo Bill influence is there since technically Silence of the Lambs does emphasize he's not trans and all, but we all know how well that worked out.

My gf and I are watching Spy x Family right now and we're absolutely loving it, despite her not caring much for shounen anime and me being neutral to it unless it's just that good.

We've mostly been on a slice-of-life kick lately though since she doesn't tend to like shows that are too heavy on plot or darker topics. We did watch through all of the Fruits Basket remake, though, a few months back and we both loved it-- it's my favorite thing we've watched so far this year by a pretty large margin.

Someone a while back mentioned Sailor Moon and Utena-- we watched all of Sailor Moon last year and I loved almost every bit of it (the SuperS arc had such a horrible pace and the first part of R was really pointless), and as I've watched Utena and Penguindrum and stuff, I could tell almost right away which episodes of Sailor Moon Kunihiko Ikuhara had a hand in directing. It was a fun little side bonus.

Now I want to rewatch Utena and Penguindrum.

The real fantasy it's presenting is that engaging in the ritual of the family unit, even if all participants are aware just how artificial and contingent on a set of unsustainable material conditions what they're doing is, can actually create positive growth in people and allow them to understand each other and themselves, and that's why it's such a refreshing and compelling show.
