Mentally unwell people are statistically much more likely to inflict violence upon themselves than others, and therapy is obviously useless if a potential shooter is never diagnosed. Neither choice would have done poo poo-all to prevent this shooting, but framing the discussion in terms of two options sure does help deflect attention away from actual solutions.
