The Intellivision is my first ever console, so a part of me dies inside when I see this attempt to bring it back and butcher it this badly.

Ask me about my STD collection!
I had a friend on the block about four decades ago who had a Colecovision. I have never heard of the Intellivision but I looked it up and apparently they were pretty much the same thing except the Intellivision could display more colors per line simultaneously, or something like that.

I don't know, that sounds like it would be impressive because in my child's mind that Smurfs game on my dude's Colecovision was better than anything I'd seen on the Atari 2600.

Glad I caught this thread, this is amazing.

Yeah the original target was $149, then Tommy repeatedly guaranteed it would never go above $199. Mysteriously that turned into $249, and now it's $289 to $339. So they removed one controller and raised the price. No one outside of the Tommy cult would ever give the Amico a second look even at $199, but this is beyond stupid.

Other consoles in the same price range: basic Switch is $299, Lite version is $199, and OLED model is $349. An Xbox Series S is $299. The PS5 digital edition is more at $399. Obviously the only comparison is the price, since those consoles are way more modern, powerful, and have huge libraries.

The Qualcomm mainboard in the Amico only costs $38. That extra $250 is for the privilege of playing browser games and mobile games with a weird controller.

So in the past month, Intellivision has lost a Software Engineer, the Senior Hardware Engineer, a Quality Assurance Analyst, and a Quality Assurance Specialist. I wonder if they are abandoning ship before it's too late or if their paychecks have started bouncing.

Also, if you like Fake Tommy on the CUPodcast, apparently it's Retro Bird who does the character. Check out his channel and give him some views.

Why am I so suprised if it is indeed Retro Bird who's doing the Tommy phone calls? Probably because it's a way different persona than his own youtube channel. I haven't delved deep into it but I did like what I did see, as I had stumbled across it while looking for inspiration(?) To curb/sell my own retro collection. There's quite a rash of "why I stopped/sold my collection" vids on youtube, mostly from a lot of smaller and lesser known channels.

I noticed those too. As someone who used to frequent retro game stores a ton, they have a different vibe these days. With the ballooning prices, it's just not worth it anymore. I picked a perfect time to go all in on Everdrives and ODEs.

Yeah, I don't know if it's just the high prices or if there's something more to this apparent collective exodus from the hobby. Personally I hit my original collecting goal, to experience all the games I'd missed as a child, and it happened to coincide with a great seller's market so it's time to scale back.

And even if it's due to game companies realizing they can make a quick buck I am glad they're making rereleases of beloved old games or finally bringing poo poo to the west so it's accessible to the average person. Too bad the Amiico/Intellivision over estimated its appeal and missed the mark on this and what people like about physical games to boot.

This is refreshing to see if only because I want to believe Jeff has been keeping some of this in him for a while...like a decade and a half maybe and now it feels like it's okay for someone to point out that it's kinda hosed up for a person to review games that they themselves worked on or had major input on in some capacity. Even if (from what I can remember) he started those reviews with a disclaimer it still felt like maybe there was such a conflict of interest that you just...shouldn't review those specific games at all?

So why is Tommy Tallarico so revered by some people? I get that he was fun to watch on old Reviews on the Run and Judgement Day episodes and he did a lot of cool stuff with music and sound effects.

I have heard rumors that he can be toxic online and attack people who dare disagree with him.

Its a shame that this console will never see the light of day. It sounded promising but it sounds like it failing to deliver.

Detective No. 27
Jun 7, 2006

I think there's the nostalgia of seeing him on TV, having him be responsible for some soundtracks they loved back in the day. He's famous enough in the gaming community to be a notable person, but not famous or wealthy enough to have been able to turn heads when he announced he's working on a system. If, say, Hideo Kojima were to randomly tweet "Kojima Studios is working on a new game system. Details in 2023." and then go silent, people would go nuts. (It being viable or necessary would be a different conversation. Point is, it would generate hype and conversation.) Tommy Tallarico on the other hand, needed to approach ANYONE who would listen to him and he didn't discriminate. Youtube, Twitter, Reddit. He'd give interviews and be open to communicate with any youtuber with a community. I think the less experienced and more easily influenced ones really got starstruck. There's shades of Trump and Elon Musk in Tallarico. Like, a super watered down version of those guys.

I apparently forgot about this thread for a few months and I come back to... many more cars smashed into the pileup.

Personal favorite is Tommy's dad's note that sounded like an annoucement that he was loving dead, not that he needed to be bailed out of jail or given leniency or whatever.

Some more of the higher ups at INTV have been quitting in the last few weeks, like the Director of Global Logistics and the Vice President of Customer Experience.

Looking at all those titles reinforces how many superfluous execs they employed and how much investor money they wasted on directors and vice presidents who collected paychecks doing nothing for 2+ years.

It looks like Tommy's strategy is to hope this debacle fades away and the only "announcement" of the end will be a bankruptcy filing with the IRS.

VGC: Intellivision is trying to save the Amico by severely cutting staff and licensing out its IP

quote:

Intellivision has confirmed it’s been taking drastic measures to keep its troubled Amico console alive.

In an email sent to those who have pre-ordered the console directly from Intellivision, CEO Phil Adam lists a number of steps the company is taking in an attempt to reach the finish line and launch the system.

Most notably, Adam notes: “We have dramatically reined in operating costs, which unfortunately required a significant reduction in staff.

“Our resources are focused on engineering and testing to ensure we have a quality system, as we cannot succeed by producing anything less.”

Adam also states that Intellivision is licensing out its legacy IP to developers who want to release games on other platforms, claiming such licensing deals “will help fund [the] continued development of Amico”.

“A broader distribution of Intellivision classic IP will also help raise awareness of Intellivision while not directly competing with Amico because of Amico’s unique controllers and family-focused gaming adaptations,” Adam says.

Further trouble for the company has come in the number of customers attempting to cancel their pre-orders and have their initial payments refunded.

“We are slowly processing refund requests,” Adam says. “The public’s uncertainty of our status in the last few months have understandably led to an influx of pre-order refund requests.

“Because of reduced staff and financing requirements for continued operation, our responses to and processing of these requests has been delayed. Rest assured that our intention is to honor all refund requests.

“We will allocate a portion of all new funding and staff time to winding down the refund queue, while our primary focus is funding and completing a quality product ready for manufacturing.”

For now, Adam says Intellivision is still pressing ahead with plans to eventually release the console, stating that the company has started a test production run of consoles “that includes every aspect of the product including packaging”.

“It is critically important to show to our current/future investors, partners, and customers that we have built a sound platform that delivers on the in-home family experience, which requires our immediate focus on value engineering and hardening of the platform,” he says.

Huh, why is it that whenever I see the phrase "our intention to honor all refund requests", it means maybe 5 people get full refunds, and the rest get maybe 10% of what they paid, if that?
