it is genuinely funny to me that this thread's talking about alchemy being bad because of how ridiculous and 'nonsense' it is while the arena thread simultaneously is talking about alchemy being bad because it's not doing anything weird and feels too much like stuff you could just print in paper

good news! for the next set they've both changed up the rarities so that there are fewer rares/mythics to make it easier on wildcards & they're doing a draft event where a common is replaced with one of the alchemy cards (of any rarity) so people can get them without spending wildcards (regular SNC draft will still exist)

They want to change around cards to test out the concept of a format where changing cards often is the norm. Fine. Doing that while nickel and diming your customers to the max is just weird.

i legit think a loving lot about game design and why choices are being made the way they are in games, and i almost definitely should post less about it when people really obviously don't give a poo poo, but i feel like sometimes people get caught up in just saying poo poo without knowing what the deal is and i feel like talking about it can help (especially when stuff like 'they're actively working to make acquiring alchemy cards better' could've easily gotten missed)

Played against a deck that played a bunch of hideouts and then splendid reclamation + galvanic iteration to ramp to like 14 mana on turn 6. But then it didn't do anything and died. Cool concept though!

The way alchemy sets up players to be ripped off if they paid money for cards sucks a lot and this opportunity to maybe randomly draw an alchemy card only reduces that grift a little and folks here are not going to accept that as an actual fix. You're welcome to argue otherwise and I think the thread should be less hostile in general to that, but I think your expectation that people heavily invested should be unemotional about it isn't realistic.

i have no idea where you got 'i think people should be unemotional' + i'm speaking to people uninvested in alchemy who aren't really paying attention to anything but what they felt about it from the top. i also don't think this is a big fix in any way and would've rather they just make alchemy cards only commons/uncommons now that we know that they don't care about card rarity in their experiments with adding them to limited

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I stand by my analysis in that thread, it bangs.

There is a difference between 'Alchemy sucks as a format because it doesn't do enough flashy stuff' and 'Alchemy fails to have an audience because it doesn't do enough flashy stuff'. There are many grognards who say they would never have anything to do with digital-only cards because they don't feel, on an emotional level, that's what Magic should be about. I'm the same way! I don't like the idea of digital-only cards and would prefer to avoid them even though I haven't played paper for years, and probably never will again. Is that rational? No, but that doesn't mean it isn't a valid reason for my behaviour.

So what I'm trying to say is, why should Alchemy even try to appeal to people like me? They may as well go hog wild on crazy Hearthstone poo poo - and as I said in the other thread, a lot of Hearthstone's poo poo is actually really good - and try to appeal to the people who actually do like that sort of thing and wouldn't mind seeing it in MTGA. And honestly, I would feel better about it as well, since I could then say 'I'm not interested in this, but can see why people are.' As opposed to the current situation of 'I'm not interested in this and can't understand why anyone would be.'

It would seem I was not the only one who saw your post as defending alchemy or its legitimacy, and at least a few folks may see alchemy as reflecting wizard's intentions for the future of Arena, in which they are heavily invested. Never playing the format is a vote against that concept. I guess.

Anyway, whatever, I'm more interested in cutting down on the "gently caress you's" in the thread generally, than I am in coming to your defense, specifically.

yeah don't get me wrong I think it's still pretty far off from good but acknowledging a problem and doing something is always a better sign than doing nothing at all and pretending things are fine

making a true to paper extended format on arena and making alchemy cards easier to acquire are both things I didn't expect to see happen this year (if at all)

Iirc arena chat somewhat dominates paper chat, just like how theres a seperate commander thread bc too many dang people play commander instead of 60 card formats

I mean none of that matters bc people post about arena and commander in here anyway but i guess if you want alchy specific decks or commander specific decks the threads are there to contain that?
