The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy getting a haircut who asks to borrow the barbershop's shotgun and then drives to the school, defies the police ordering him not to go in, and shoots the bad guy

Has anyone figured out where the armed guard was that day? I know they initially said it started with a shootout and then the story changed to "the SRO wasn't there". But they didn't really specify where the SRO was.

The last version of the story I read was that the SRO was offsite but drove there when the call came in and drove past the shooter crouching behind some cars to harass some teacher instead. Doesn't say what they did after that, probably stood around outside with the other cops.

Uvalde schools have their own police department, and the Uvalde School District Police Chief is being blamed for the delay in police actually doing anything. the police chief was elected to the city council and apparently has declined to take that seat on the city council.

I think someone mentioned earlier in this thread that more children are killed by firearms than police, but it was from questionable source. But looking at the CDC data, it's not even close. Waaaay more kids are killed by guns than police. And this is lovely CDC data that's impeded by a lot of dumb pro gun laws that prevent research into firearm impact on health. It's probably undercounting the child deaths.

This country has a terminal case of gunbrain and carbrain. 2020 was the first year that firearms killed more kids than cars. Maybe car deaths will overtake firearm deaths as more oversized pickup and SUVs enter the market.

Don't worry, we'll fix it by letting COVID kill more kids than guns. Problem solved.

I imagine any country with gun violence has more kids than cops die from guns, because there are way more kids than cops and cops will do anything to avoid being in personal danger.

I saw someone on reddit say that first responders running into the WTC on 9/11 but cops refusing to run into a school to save children showed just how far the social contract has deteriorated over the last 20 years, and I think that there's some truth to that, but also I feel like firefighters aren't nearly as big of cowards as cops are

but the social contract has been dying since the 80's. Conservatives talk all about how colleges are socialist indoctrination centers but I clearly remember taking an ethics class which talked about how doing everything in the way that most benefited you was a legitimate ethical system, and just lol, lmao

I know that a lot of fire response ends up being roadside gore, but firefighters at a core level are trained to run into lethal situations using gear they know to be insufficient in some cases and time limited in others, with a goal of protecting people and more or less ignoring property. in some cases these are volunteers, professionally the median income is 50k

cops are trained to run into situations that are mostly not that dangerous but in their heads are always almost lethal, using gear they know can maim or kill anyone they encounter, with a goal of protecting capital and more or less ignoring people. these are all professional jobs with relatively light training and a $67k median income

feels like one of these models is more likely to attract samaritans and the other is more likely to attract greedy fucks hungry for power

maybe we need volunteer police forces which are generally unarmed. or, you know, no cops.

In 2020, 4,357 children died to firearms of about 70 million kids in the US.
In the same year, 50 cops died to firearms of about 700,000 cops in the US.
That comes out to around 6 deaths per 100,000 kids vs. about 7 deaths per 100,000 cops.

You're right. I give my prior statement 2 pinocchios for implying being a child in the US is more dangerous than being a cop.

That rate is insane but the crazy thing about it is that since cops shoot each other by accident at a prodigious rate, seems to imply that cops are about as competent with firearms as a 6 year old who literally thinks a gun is a toy.

but is the US really just gonna blow this one off too? yes obviously

It sucks that the only information we're going to get is from security cameras because the cops are just incessantly lying about everything.
