The movie is explicitly... inspired by the former, but by acting as an Elseworlds hagiography of actual historical figures, it also serves as the latter. I was gonna use the term Hindutva, but that's only based on the cultural markers that I would ignorantly characterize as "Indian"

The only Zahler film I have seen is Bone Tomahawk and I don’t understand how anyone could watch it and have a reaction other than “Wow, that was really loving racist. This is definitely a writer/director I should never pay any attention to ever again.” I feel leery about some actors I like and respect for even agreeing to be in it.

precision posted:people do not always agree with every character they write. do you really "not understand" that or are you just exaggerating for effect I am not even referring to a single character, I’m talking about the movie as a whole, the entire loving premise. A bunch of white guys in the old west who go save a white woman from savage subhuman indigenous dwellers, but it’s okay because there’s one native person who shows up for literally 10 seconds to say “yeah, they’re monsters not like us”, and that makes the entire movie focusing on how these white men are taming the west against these savage monsters totally not racist. gently caress all the way off with that poo poo. There’s also been multiple posts in this very thread about how the politics Zahler puts into his character’s mouths align with his personal beliefs!

People don't "necessarily" agree with the characters they "write" or believe "the situations" they create are "real" or that "words and" ideas have meaning or when "the" premise of a movie is horrific cannibal native americans that happen to fit racial stereotypes that it "indicates" they "kind of agree" with those stereotypes.

I thought the premise for Bone Tomahawk was great, and I stole it for a D&D adventure. I made them gnolls and just had them take over an isolated outpost (a Keep On the Borderlands, if you will) instead of a damsel in distress situation. To be honest I didn't think it was some kind of slam on Native Americans any more than Deliverance's feral hillbillies were a slam on rural whites, but times change I guess. Social media has basically made everyone into an evangelical mindset (I include myself, but I'm trying to fight it - and I've given up most social media). It's a pretty wild thing to live through.

every now and then YouTube will recommend me the kind of video i used to enjoy and i will recoil in horror and wonder how i ever could stand it something like "someone talking about Tumblr drama for 2 hours" or the aforementioned Sarah Zed. people who are so deep in the media that you suspect it's kind of all they ever think about? and you know, it's funny when i say that and someone inevitablly replies with some kind of "lmao you're just old" thing, but... nah that ain't it hoss. like i said, i used to understand and enjoy all this stupid poo poo too, even as recently as like, last year. trust me when i say that when you stop paying attention to it, the whole world changes. something i've had to come to terms with, that i wish more people would, is that "whatever you think about all day, is what the universe seems to you to be composed of"

I don't think Deliverance was racist against white southerners per se but I do think it has some less than flattering things to say about hillbillies, and I don't think white southerners are really oppressed on the level of indigenous Americans. edit fwiw I enjoyed Bone Tomahawk fine and excused it as a sort of intentional schlock angle, and took that line about "these aren't Indians, these are monsters" in good faith. It was when the director started making other movies that all had this real hard right angle and also the movie about cool literal nazis hunting down minorities that I reevaluated it

Brocktoon posted:I can't comment on movies I haven't seen. This will sound like a fake question but I am honestly interested in your reply: do you think there is or can be any value in works of art whose worldview you don't agree with? Really think about it. Or to put it another way, is there a difference between art appreciation and the personal enjoyment of art? Does all willing consumption of art amount to an endorsement of it? These are imo profound questions that I wrestle with, well into my 5th decade. I'm suspicious of anyone with a facile answer to these questions. But that's me, and maybe I'm wrong.
