The station I work for on the side, when we do stream-only games, we cut from 3+ cameras down to 2, and literally don't even have replays anymore because the only non-talent staff is 1 director and the 2 camera ops.

It's absolutely loving maddening. I have literally on calls said "boy, imagine if we had replay to show you what just happened!"

He’s been flirting with satellite radio for years and years. CBS paid him a lot of money to stick around on terrestrial radio. He’s got a pretty big, loyal listener base and is largely the only thing CBS sports radio has going on besides live sports.

Yeah, my guess is that Rome still has one of the biggest followings and does well enough on the ad buys and syndication.

Exactly, not to mention that ESPN and Fox both have a ton of affiliates that they could use his show on. Also TV, CBS Sports has nothing else, and if they weren't paying him he'd be on a show screaming at someone else in a minute.

yeah their coverage has been pretty good. they are much more committed to the studio stuff being good than just "here's Mike Milbury for two minutes" and then a bunch of commercials

Let's talk Football.
The black widow one sounds cool. I know nothing about her but I remember seeing her on ESPN all the time. The ravens one, when they inevitably gloss over the Ray Lewis stuff will suck.

Jeanette Lee's story is pretty great and she's actually a genuinely nice person to boot (or at least had a reputation as such in the pro/hustling circuits). Knowing how long she fought some horrific back issues in a game where that's pretty critical to playing well and still accomplished so much should make for a pretty compelling episode.

Oh drat, she was our favorite among my college friends who’d stay up late and watch ESPN: the Ocho on the regular. None of us knew poo poo all about the sports we were watching, even pool, which most of us allegedly knew how to play. But she seemed so cool and unflappable that anytime there was pool on, we’d be yelling down the hall for everyone in the dorm to come watch.

This sounds super interesting, literally everything I know about the pool circuit/industry/whatever is from The Hustler and that one episode of Fresh Prince so it’ll be cool to get some actual info on it

Emergency confection port.

Someone sent me this article about Thom Brennaman since his heated gaming moment and... huh. He really does seem committed to getting better? I had no idea.

https://www.outsports.com/2022/3/22/22989588/thom-brennaman-gay-slur-lgbtq-mlb-baseball-tv-hire

quote:

The people gathered on Messer’s porch talked openly for about two hours about their lives as LGBTQ people in and around the Cincinnati area.

“I could tell he was very taken by the conversation,” Messer said. “And it wasn’t like he was just nodding his head. There was zero disingenuousness in his interactions.”

One of the people there was Lynn Hailey, a retired communications professional in the Cincinnati area and, yes, a Reds fan.

“I could tell Thom was nervous,” said Hailey. “I think he probably hadn’t sat with a group of eight LGBTQ people in the community like that before. That day he was really in pain. It was an honest and painful conversation.”

Brennaman’s blind spots at the time crept up that afternoon. When he stood behind his “love everyone” Christian faith in the conversation, it hit the wrong tone for one attendee.

“He kept talking about his faith, how [his language] was a betrayal of his faith, and a betrayal of himself as a Christian man,” said Reggie Harris, elected to the Cincinnati City Council last year. “To a gay person, for someone to invoke their Christian faith doesn’t exactly bring me comfort.”

Brennaman hadn’t thought much of it at the time. There was a minister at the meeting, and other attendees talked about being Christian themselves.

One of the lessons Brennaman has learned over the last 18 months is some history about the at-times problematic relationship the church has had with the LGBTQ community.

“I understand there have been a lot of outspoken Christian pastors, priests and reverends, who have been highly critical of people being gay,” Brennaman said. “I understand that.”

Still, Brennaman mostly listened for that two hours on Messer’s porch. He heard about parents rejecting their children when they came out. He heard about bullying and Cincinnati’s history of homophobia – a history some of the very people on that porch, like Messer, had helped change.

“He certainly did more listening than talking, and he got an earful,” said Evan Millward, a reporter at WCPO-9, the ABC affiliate in the area. “Everyone went around and shared their stories, and some were more painful than others.”
