this

if you’re serious about an EV right now and you don’t have $200,000 and you don’t literally work for Rivian and you’re not interested in making all of the QoL tradeoffs that come with owning a LEAF and you got spooked off of the Bolt thanks to the recall and you can afford the cost of an “average” new car then your best option by far is probably a Tesla Model 3 (or a Y if you’re weird and into ugly things)

it’s still the benchmark, it’s still the easiest one to get, it’s still the one not subject to dealer bullshit

so that’s what everybody here has done. A lot of the people who were considering other cars or holding out either ended up getting Teslas or decided to wait it out with gas. A lot of the people who had Mach Es and LEAFs and i3s and Bolts replaced them with Teslas.

So now this thread is kind of a Tesla owner circlejerk lounge for the moment and it turns out that nobody else in AI likes those spaces

Correct. They’re just subject to quarterly price increases and no tax credit. Totally different.

Listen, you want an EV it’s actually pretty easy. First off, look up some google spreadsheet of an insane online dude tracking VINs of the factory. Once you see your particular choice coming to your area, hound every dealer for months. Find which one won’t gently caress you on markups and add-ons. You can skip the VIN part and just hound dealers looking for sales that went awry. Then do the trade-in dance only to say gently caress it and go with carvana. Then get your car. Maybe. Who the gently caress knows. The market isn’t real and nothing makes sense anymore.

First owner review of the Lightning: https://www.f150lightningforum.com/2022/06/01/initial-driving-impressions-lightning-lariat-owner/

quote:

Ok, we have over 500 miles under our belts with our Lariat and are starting to get the feel for this machine. We’re seeing avg mi/kWh in the 1.8-2.2 on highway (avg speed of 70 mph) and 2.8-3.4 in town (speeds varying 25-50 mph).

Love, LOVE the hands free “Blue Cruise,” but still need to play with it a bit more. I like that it truly is hands free so long as you’re looking ahead. I like that it accelerates when changing lanes instead of hesitating like auto pilot does on Tesla. I like that it doesn’t try to maintain the middle of an unmarked/unlined merge lane. I didn’t experience the jockeying that @oneguynick experienced…so no nausea here 🤞🏼.

This thing is POWERFUL! I took some friends for a test drive yesterday and even I, as a former Model 3 owner, was BLOWN AWAY by the torque! It continues to pull hard well beyond posted speed limits (which, I, of course didn’t exceed 😇). Case I point: one of my favorite tricks in the Model 3 was to stomp on the “go” pedal at 40/45 mph and hear the gasps for air from my occupants. Never once did I hear tire squeal from it. The Lightning, on the other hand, spins the fronts when I attempt that. BE FOREWARNED—make sure to keep both hands on the wheel; the torque steer threw me for a loop when I was one-handing it. I predict lots of crashes if people aren’t mindful of the power this thing has. Oh, and this was all in “Normal” mode, too 😂🤣😆

In preparation for the rides yesterday, I took it to a touchfree car wash to clean off some of the bugs and mess from our first trip over the weekend. The “mega power frunk” stayed nice and dry inside, but the interior fenders were splashed/wet. I don’t think it’ll be a concern, but as a handyman, I intend to keep tools up there on the daily. (See pics)

Finally, it’s going to take some getting used to if you’re coming from Tesla. (We traded our Model 3 in and are no longer Tesla owners). And this is just one use case *with a brand new truck*. I accept my husband and I are early adopters and trust this will get better with time.

We left our cottage in SW MI with enough projected range to get to a DC Fast charger along our route (roughly 50% battery or 139 miles of projected range). When entering I-94, the navigation had us stopping at an EA Charger in Evergreen Park IL with a delta of 20 or so miles. Sunday was a very windy day and we were driving SW into SW winds—massive headwind. While we got 2.2 mi/kWh going up to the cottage on Saturday, our efficiency was shrinking to 1.6/1.8 during this leg of the journey. As we started driving home, the projected range and destination delta began shrinking significantly.

Here’s where I missed our Model 3. We’d normally top up at a supercharger before hitting the road (our cottage doesn’t even have grounded outlets so charging wasn’t happening there). The supercharger network made traveling so simple in a Tesla. We do lots of road-trips each year and have taken our Model 3 to all of them since purchasing in 2018.

As we were nearing the Indiana state line, the nav system began redirecting us 34 miles in another redirection to a DC Fast Charger along I-80 (we were traveling along I-94). We were basically in a DC Fast Charger dead zone. First, we hopped on PlugShare to see what nearby chargers existed. We found a Chargepoint charger at the next exit and headed that way. Upon arrival, we watched a Mach-E plug into the only CCS at that station. He planned on being there for 20 minutes. Impatience got the better of us so we decided to head to the next nearest “fast charger” which brought us to a travel stop on I-80 East (yes, opposite from our destination). After 38 minutes, we only mustered 62 miles and plugged in our route home, which still took us farther East to a DC Fast Charger in South Bend. They’re, we used 62 or 63 kWh of our 250 kWh balance from the Blue Oval network and did a plug and charge. Tty minutes later we added 142 miles which was plenty to get us home. What’s typically a 2.5 hour ride, turned into a 4.5+ hour trek home.

I admit I was frustrated. Was it the sunburn? Was I hangry? Did I contemplate pulling over and listing on carsandbids.com? Yes. It’s just the trade-off of being an early adopter in a vehicle that’s still getting used to us.

Did they add lane changing to BC? Pretty sure they haven't which means this is just ACC sensing there's no longer a car in front of you and accelerating.

I bet the Lightning is the same as the Mach, in that Ford doesn't have a chill mode, you still get full power even in whisper mode, so it wouldn't make a difference that he was in normal mode. I'm also not sure "has less effective traction control" is really a positive but if you like tire squeal I guess it could be.

BlueCruise has the unfortunate issue that it ping pongs along the lane lines. You can tell it is compensating with going too far and then back. At highway speeds, it can be slight nausea-inducing. I have read a few reviews of the tech on other autos Ford produces, and no one mentioned it, so I am not sure if it is something wrong with my truck or if no one else has compared it to other platforms.

It doesn't have auto lane change.

But this is a behavior the regular Ford ACC has (on my F-150 and older Fusion). As soon as you hit the left turn signal to pass the car will accelerate. Even if you are not clear of the vehicle in front of you yet.

Per my owner's manual:

quote:

Note: When you are following a vehicle and you switch on a turn signal lamp, adaptive cruise control may provide a small, temporary acceleration to help you pass.

It's a nice feature.

Maybe? It did fine on a trip from Portland to Seattle and back which is the longest drive we’ve taken since we got it, but that’s interstate all the way. Haven’t tried it on a two lane highway so maybe it’s worse there.

That’s what I was looking at prior to the recall. I really liked it. Only negative about it was the max charging rate but that never would have been a real issue for me since I wasn’t planning on using it for super long drives (since I rarely do those in the first place)

GATOS Y VATOS
Aug 22, 2002

Yeah I'd probably be taking ~4 trips from San Francisco to SoCal a year, so adding an hour or two so to make semi-frequent stops really doesn't bother me. The main reason I'd want an EUV over an 2EV honestly is the sunroof option, but at the same time apparently it's a known problem that the seal on it has been known to peel back at highway speeds. :/

This is pretty much a sign that this MY Bolt is going to be the last one since they are moving to the Ultimum batteries for future cars.

edit: official info from the horse's mouth

One time when I was driving the Vanagon, I T-boned somebody turning left across a 4-lane divided highway. Failure to yield. With their head so close to our grill, the driver is lucky to have lived, even though they'll never walk again. I immediately went out and bought a car with side curtain airbags because of that, sold the wrecked bus to some bus enthusiast from Colorado.

We had the same insurance agent, which made things so much easier. The driver told our insurance agent that we were speeding. The insurance agent presented us with this accusation, and I asked them to check what kind of car we were driving. We both had a good laugh: I was lucky if I could get that thing up to 50.

With a 82kWh battery and range of "over 200 miles", I imagine the Buzz is going to be on the similar end of EV acceleration as the Vanagon was for a petrol car.
