I was surprised to see this was so expensive because my (non-record collecting) wife randomly decided to pick it up at Barnes & Noble one day a few years ago. It seems like it gets repressed occasionally but it’s picked up immediately by scalpers? Fun hobby.

What attitude problem?
I would also like a non-absurd price for Fever to Tell. The pandemic made FOMO go even crazier for the modern record listener. I’ll see stupid prices on discogs for standard releases by Taylor Swift or Nirvana that are just out of print for a few months as the pressing plants get backed up and people are pay 1.5 to 2 times what the standard retail would be once they come back in the meantime. It’s dumb.

Speaking of dumb scalping, RSD part 2: electric boogaloo is this month isn't it? I think its exactly on my mom's birthday so I won't be going anyways. Also exactly on Paul McCartney's birthday if my Beatles trivia is correct.

I found a copy at one of my local stores a month or two back. I think it was $23. Obviously not an original…those were over $100 10+ years ago

my local shop had some of those for $27. I figured it was a bootleg but bought it anyway. It was warped and the first few minutes of each side skipped badly. record store guy opened the other copies and found they were all mispressed. so buyer beware. I did hear a legit version was coming out this year, but it's Cake so who knows?

It's in almost perfect condition, though, with only two blown lamps. And it came with the wood case and even the original box, manual, and FM antenna. So overall yeah it was a lot but honestly I could probably sell it for more if I wanted to.

Not that I'd want to. We were using a Harmon Kardon from the early 2000s that was fine, but this thing absolutely kicks and I can't imaging buying a new receiver ever again.

I' ve seen how much those go for and you absolutely got a deal. And that poo poo's only going up.

The turntable repair shop finally got my dad’s old B&O Beogram 2400 on the bench to look at. Needs some extensive work because of spindle and dust cover issues. I should be looking at between $120 - $180 depending on final labor hours. He has to make his own parts, but that fabrication is included in the labor with no charge for materials. The guy said the cartridge looks to be in really good condition. I asked if he could actually test it over the weekend to confirm. If it’s good, I might go through with the repair.

My other option is to see if the owner (wasn’t in today) would be interested in purchasing with intent to resale on site, or to use for parts. Their general charge is $30 get something on the bench for an initial diagnosis. I can see through their viewable notes that the guy already spent an hour on it. I can get a new Fluance RT-82 for $300. If I get a reasonable offer, I might go that route. Then I don’t have drive 45 mins to pick it up.

Now I get the weekend to ponder where my cutoff is…

That seems like a hell of a deal for vintage gear repair. I think most people here would say to get that thing fixed. Sounds like you’ve got a competent shop on your hands at least.

For the record, I spent nearly as much getting a Sony PS-LX2 more or less made worse (thanks a heap, shop). Then I bought an Audio Technica elsewhere and haven’t looked back. So I get where you’re coming from.

I used to be a court reporter and we were virtually only allowed to use Marantz PMD recorders. Years after I had been recording to MP3.

I lucked into a huge donation at the Goodwill the other day, almost all old stuff but mostly in really good condition and all at a dollar so I went ahead and just grabbed some because of the cover art alone, or a couple that I actually don't care for that much but can't forget.

Also, a whole shopping cart full of dollar records in beautiful condition. Some of these I wouldn't have gotten if they were $2 but for $1 I can buy a fricking Frank Sinatra in very good condition. Once again, lots of stuff I consider virtually frame-able.

Dammit I was gonna buy that moog album at one point but gave up wading through discogs for a decent copy. There is a whole subgenre of Wendy Carlos wannabes and cash ins: I have the albums Nashville Gold and Happy Moog myself, as well as the Martin Denny RSD one. Seems to also have been a thing of just letting a pianist loose on a moog and hoping it's sellable if you consider Dick Hyman part of this as well.
