On Gamepass. Combination of grid-tactics (ie FE Heroes) with deckbuilding, with art by the Dicey Dungeons artist.

Got this on Gamepass. Pretty cute and fun, even though I'm not a big FE / tactics guy. Carlton (the robot arm buddy) is an adorable little psycho.

haha normally I'd be the first to defend something like this, calling out something derivative of something derivative feels silly to me, and there's convergence in general when making sprites at a certain perspective and self imposed resolution... but this whole package looks like something designed to be mistaken for Stardew. Plus you think if you're making a not-Stardew, first thing you'd improve and make your own would be the UI. Doesn't help that their character art, which is doing it's own thing I guess, doesn't look great but worse, doesn't match anything else. If I just saw that image in a farm game thread I would've thought it was a stardew mod with out-of-place character replacements.

It ends up looking different from Stardew when you’re playing it I think, mostly in that stuff is uglier. Eg the trees and stuff are definitely in a different and not as good style :)

All that said it’s a pretty fun coop game and I would definitely recommend it. The loop is pretty different from Stardew. It’s more like a little baby overcooked when you run the tavern combined with a bunch of different crafting trees for you to work your way up. Eventually the running of the tavern becomes partially automated and you focus more and more on crafting and higher level management stuff.

I'll be the negative guy and say I'm really not enjoying it compared to older versions. There is something very "paint-by-numbers" about it. The open world is pretty but very empty, and something about it just doesn't work, although I don't know what. It's maybe that the enemies are so obvious in their locations that it creates bland gameplay. Sure, you can try stealthily getting up close to everyone and taking them out silently, but why bother when the AI is so mind numbingly dumb that you can just pick them off from 100 meters away. I think maybe in the prior games there was a sense of the enemy doing something, whereas in this one they just stand around and wait for me to shoot them.

The open world is definitely a big issue though - there are wide open spaces of nothing happening, with optional objectives that seem to be bizarrely empty of actual risk. In the 1st mission one of the optional objectives is to destroy 4 AA guns, but these guns are entirely unmanned and unguarded - I just walked in and blew them up without so much as a single enemy bothering themselves.

Finally (maybe controversially?) there is a really weird, non-lethal aspect that's been added, in which you're granted extra XP for not killing Nazis. The game seems to go rather out of its way to give you all sorts of non-lethal rounds to avoid...killing Nazis...

Basically i'm glad it's on xbox game pass - i'd give it a pass otherwise.

That's weird, on my playthrough there were 3 or 4 guys at each one

Fishing Paradiso

https://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/256857804/movie480_vp9.webm

quote:

Bad news: you’re dead. Good news: at least you made it into Heaven!

When you first awaken in the afterlife, you find yourself on a tiny deserted island in the middle of the ocean. No pearly gates, no choir of angels to greet you—just a couple of palm trees and an annoying little bird to keep you company. For a place called Heaven, it sure doesn’t feel much like paradise. There’s no shelter to protect you from the elements, nor even any food to eat. In fact, the only thing here at all seems to be an old fishing rod lying down by the shore. Looks like you’re gonna have to learn how to fish.

Thankfully, you won’t have to go it alone for long, as you’ll soon be given access to your very own boat, as well as a fancy little doodad called a “skyPhone.” With this, you can plan out fishing expeditions, upgrade your gear, and take on requests from the various denizens of the afterlife. By fulfilling their wishes, you’ll grow closer to each of these friendly souls, and eventually, gain access to new fishing spots and even more interesting types of fish, with each step bringing you closer to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the legendary God Fish...

Fishing Paradiso is a narrative-driven adventure game designed to be both therapeutic and engaging with its relaxing gameplay and RPG-style progression systems. The more you fish, the more the game opens up with new environments to explore, new story objectives, and new characters to meet and befriend. With over 100 different types of fish to catch, not to mention dozens of upgrades to unlock, furniture to collect, there’s never been a better time to set sail and see for yourself what surprises paradise has in store!

Seems like a cute little fishing RPG. Has a pretty substantial demo if you want to check it out. Only question in my mind is how long the full game is, but I enjoyed the demo.

Note: the demo refers to the protagonist as he/him but the developers said in the Steam forums that the gender was supposed to be ambiguous and it is a mistranslation from the Japanese; they say they've fixed that in the full game.

I got almost 500 hours into Stardew and hundreds more in Terraria, but my jesus am I ever sick of retro styled graphics. I know they cant go full modern graphics due to the indie nature of most of these studios (or one man shows like Stardew), but I will continue to yearn for the unlikely day when passionate creators have the resources to make something that even approaches AAA levels. And when you look at the aforementioned examples, surely they've earned enough from those titles to be able to make something more modern? I guess they have no desire to. Stay 2D if you must, but give me crystal clear sprites and backgrounds at least.

Are there any good Zelda clones out there on Steam? I have Oceanhorn, which I believe is a mobile port and its a serviceable adventure on the cheap. Then I picked up Shalnor Legends, which was horse poo poo.

I signed up for the Leap playtest, but still on the lookout for a proper fast paced multiplayer FPS.

You got it in the last sentence. I'm quite sure that ConcernedApe and Toby Fox and Re-Logic have the money to do games that aren't retro-styled, but all three of them like old games. Some people want to create modern graphics, but some people want to create games that look like the ones they played as children, or that comment on the games they played as children. There are plenty of indie studios that do more representational games: "Firewatch", "Heaven's Vault", for two. (And goddamnit, both those studios got bought and their next game discontinued.)

Your preference is cool and good; where I disagree is that people who do retro games can't afford to do representational games.

I picked this up, and played past the first real boss. Very fun so far, the controls are smooth (though you end up having to use so many different hotkeys, game seems designed around a controller for sure), the pixel graphics are neat, the game is decently challenging, and the three characters you can choose between seem fairly different in playstyle, and have their own upgrade paths.

Can definitely recommend from what I've seen so far.

I was pretty skeptical when I first saw Glyph, it has a very plain and common look and generally looks a lot like a million other games in both aesthetic and gameplay. After playing however I am feeling much more charitable. They've just nailed the movement skills in this one, they are all interesting and fun to use, and must all be used in concert to truly do well. I love how much air control you get, and it is necessary because you will be pulling off some pretty complex maneuvers. It's broken up into little levels with collectibles like coins and relics which are used to unlock new areas, as well as different skins. It gets tricky fast!
Reaching waaaaay back in the thread to say that I've been loving this game and heartily recommend it to anyone who likes difficult 3d platforming or "marble games" even a little bit.

I bought Card Shark this weekend. I have put about an hour into it and beaten two of the early scenarios and I'm really liking it. I love the hand-drawn chalky art style, I love the music, and I love the cheeky, mischievous plot about cheating French elites out of money.

The gameplay seems to combine both rhythm games, memory games, and thumbstick patterns to, say, improperly shuffle a deck to make sure certain cards fall in the right spot. It's not fully Wario Ware levels of minigames, but there's a decent variety so far. I'm playing on Medium difficult and so far, I'm doing pretty good even with bad memory and bad reaction times and sucking at rhythm games. There's an easy mode and a hard mode and it looks like you can change difficulty at will. I may have to bump it down to Easy at some point but for now, even my bad brain can hang. YMMV!

Hopefully that gives you enough info to know if you're interested in it.
