Eyed Click Beetle. They play dead, but also have a modified joint between the thorax and abdomen that lets them **Click** several inches into the air, startle onlookers, and hopefully land down-side-down away from threat.

Thank you! Sorry again for the hasty uploads! They really wanted to know what it was and I thought (some kind of Click Beetle) but my entomology is worse than I want it to be.

I put him in a shaded area behind the bench so I hope he's happy.

I don't know if it's because I live in a different part of town now or if it's due to the ongoing decline of insect populations but I don't remember seeing anywhere near as many click beetles, if any, in recent years as there were when I was a kid. I love these eyed click beetles y'all have posted here, imagine seeing those big eyes staring you down and then launching at you! Our local (Australian) ones are plain glossy black, and when we were kids we used to use the clicking sound to locate trapped beetles to put them back outside.

In meteorology, vorticity often refers to a measurement of the spin of horizontally flowing air about a vertical axis.

Similarly it seems like I don't see fireflies anymore. Where I would see dozens when I was a kid, I maybe see two or three now if I really look for them. I've got a small hill in my backyard that I let grow wild, and I still don't see them.

The science says it's primarily driven by loss of habitat caused by deforestation, climate change, agriculture, and pollution. So while pesticide use is definitely contributing to localized declines in insect populations, a much larger contribution would be from something like plowing a meadow to grow a field of corn.

I was also up a mountain last week putting in a new section of trail and found out there is such a thing as a Hover Bee or Hover Fly when one carefully scrutinized our work crew during lunch. No pics because I didn't have my phone but they're pretty much just as advertised, just standing stock still in air eyeing everything.

Staying in one spot and not moving is how they attract the ladies. Wish it worked on humans. :(

Good guess. Those are some kind of leaf footed bug but their body shape does look quite a lot like our bigger assassin bug species.

A friend of mine sent me this today. I have no idea what the heck this bug could be. I tried insectidenfication.com but it didn't have anything close.

He said it's 1-2mm long. No wings or anything. And couldn't get a picture with more contrast because there wasn't any. It was just black.

In southern Ontario, Canada.
Any ideas?

And literally seconds after receiving that picture, I found this pretty moth

Looks like the ladybug nymph I just posted yesterday. Different species I assume since it doesn’t have the orange bits. Could be the one being discussed here, which would grow up to look like this.

Thanks so much for the ID! I know we both so I wasn't sure, but seems like the jagged legs are a giveaway.

I also just noticed some sort of leaf bug in the middle top of the pic I didn't notice before I uploaded this!
