The origins of it date back further than AEW, they used to say the same thing about indies in general, then later NJPW, and the funniest was when they said it about NXT which was a WWE product itself except that wrestling fans also loved it.

It's funny because I watched wrestling regularly through the 90's until around 2005 and then sporadically until like 2010ish and the reason AEW appealed to me is that it reminded me of what I grew up with with a lot of the stupid poo poo cut out. It feels way more like the WWF/WCW/ECW prime years than WWE does.
