My experience with DHL was that it was delivered a week EARLIER than the date they originally gave me, but that date was over a month out anyway so it just changed to being a bit less than a month. So yeah, that's what you're paying the extra $25-30 for if you buy from Amazon.

DHL got the package to me fine, just their notifications are useless. For 3 weeks it said it had left China, then the notification said it was delayed in China, 4 days later it was suddenly in New York and a week later I had it on my door. The process was fine, but you're not tracking your package like with the other carriers.

Anyone know of a way to run RPG Maker games on an RP2+? I imagine it's powerful enough to run them. There's quite a few I wouldn't mind trying out, and it seems like the perfect platform for them

I think there’s an Android RPG Maker runtime though I’m on my phone at the moment. There’s also EasyRPG for playing older RPGM games like OFF and Space Funeral

Yes, I did find that while searching these forums for "RPG Maker", but that's mostly about RPGs in general, not specifically ones that will run on my portable, and the last mention of "RPG Maker" is on page 3292 out of 3315. But I suppose I could go ask there. So thank you, weirdly aggressive and overly sarcastic goon.

I..have no idea how you read "weirdly aggressive and overly sarcastic" out of six words, I suggested that because people often ask that question in that thread, but go off I guess.

In any case here's EasyRPG's official compatibility list, which is as good a starting place as any I guess: https://community.easyrpg.org/t/compatibility-list/283

For Android/JoiPlay things are a bit harder as some games use weird nodejs clases or Windows APIs so those are out but generally RPGMXP should be fine and VX/Ace stuff would be on the trickier side depending on the game. Uh, they do have a compatibility page but it won't load for me. I also found an image of a bunch of games someone tested but whoever made it seemed to be exclusively interested in porn games ..though it seems the Lisa games all work but Hylics doesn't do so well.

I'm months away from having my Odin and have some trips coming up. In terms of a larger form factor I can order in a reasonable amount of time, how bad are the RG503 and 552? Reviews poo poo on them for their higher end performance on newer systems, but if I'm only going as high as a GBA are they decent enough?

If you need to get them shipped to you fast, the RG503 is like $170 on Amazon, the 552 is $250-260, it's a lot to pay for ultimately what amounts to not that much power (but their screens are very, very nice and fairly large).

Meanwhile the RG351P and V are $110-130, the Miyoo Mini is $70-80, and the RP2+ is $150, and all of these are fine for going as high as GBA.

I like the 552 so far.
I haven't played with the non-android side of things yet, and have sat down to play a few GBA games on it and some Sega Genesis stuff.
I personally like the heft of it, since it feels more substantial. I played on my kids' switch lites and they feel really flimsy by comparison.
I keep on forgetting that I need to sit down and play through Rastan.

Miyoo Mini is kinda hilarious, it’s small but it’s cheap and it’s handled the PS1 games I’ve tried so far (SotN, FFT, Front Mission 3) well. SNES, GBA, Genesis all seem fine.

I installed Onionos on it and it’s been cool.

This is where I've settled - I've had the 552 since the start of January but these days use the Miyoo Mini a lot more. The 552 screen is amazing but I just find it really uncomfortable, especially when trying to use L2/R2 and sticks (admittedly that's more a problem for Xbox Cloud than GBA). It feels a pretty expensive stopgap if you have an Odin coming - I do too (been waiting since Feb) but I had the 552 first and had real buyers regret once the early Odin reviews were rolling out. I plan to sell my 552 as soon as my Odin arrives.

The 351p is an ideal GBA device but the screen really isn't great for scaling much other than GBA. The Miyoo Mini is an great long-term companion to the Odin IMO, cheapest to pick up as an interim device, and the resolution is fine for GBA and others, but it's really a personal decision whether that screen is too small.

FWIW my progression has been V90 (cheap gateway drug) -> 351p -> 350m (sold again) -> 552 (plan to sell) -> Miyoo Mini -> Odin (sometime). Miyoo Mini has definitely become by favourite/most played.

Oooooooooooh!

This is a bit outside of the thread's topic, but after setting up emulation on the Steam Deck, I'd say it has a great screen for GBA games. The ratio is very close to filling the whole screen and it supports an LCD3x shader that adds a really crisp looking fake pixel grid so it feels like you're blowing up an GBA SP screen.

Basically everything is going to handle up to GBA just fine. As mentioned the 351p is the ideal size/ratio for it, but not great for everything else, and possibly a bit small for you.

With the caveat that I don't own a RG552, I'd definitely recommend the RG503. The screen is gorgeous, and it's just about the right size-compromize between too big to carry around and too small to comfortably play on. Its speakers are also very nice IMO. I personally also much prefer lighter devices over heaver because they're more comfortable to play in bed and suchlike - I think of my purchase of a 351mp as a mistake now mostly because of its weight.

I'd also recommend looking at the rgb10 max 2. It's slightly smaller than the 503 making it more pocketable (for coat or larger trouser pockets anyway), and the layout is more comfortable to play on, especially for long periods. The screen is just the standard IPS and the speaker doesn't sound as good as the 503, but those may be reasonable compromises depending on your preference for comfort and portability. The ratio is much wider than it needs to be for most of what it can play, but that's less noticeable for GBA, and honestly the lost space due to black bars isn't as much an issue on the larger devices as it is on the 3.5"-ers and smaller to me.

It feels a lot like there isn't much more space to dominate in the handheld world, if you want a small, cheap device that plays the old stuff there's the Powkiddy V90 and Miyoo Mini, if you want that in a landscape form there's the 351 devices and RP2+, if you want something more powerful for Dreamcast and up there's the Odin. So a lot of stuff coming out now is going to feel like it's just retreading when it's not actively driving down the price to performance ratio like the Miyoo Mini did.

zzMisc
Jun 26, 2002

I'd possibly buy it if it could switch to a 'bluetooth controller' mode and double as a regular controller for PC. I'd definitely buy it if it could also emulate a GBA connected to a PC running Dolphin. (There's no reason to believe it'd be able to do either of those things)

And I know I've already beaten this horse beyond death, but I would take the aptly named Retro Dodo and Taki Udon's automatic whiny response to anything Anbernic does with a massive hunk of salt.

In the case of Taki I’d take it more in the context of his status as the de facto English language spokesperson for Retroid and AYN at this point. I don’t think it’s deliberate but he does seem to be getting quite close to the manufacturing side and combined with English being his second language I think he’s being a bit too direct at times.

It’s interesting to see the small boutique industry of these little handhelds really explode and you can see where the strain between YouTubers and manufacturers is showing. The pissing match last week between Aya and AYN was a good example of how cut-throat it’s getting.

I think there are real power and size limitations to what you can put that rockchip in but the Powkiddy 10S shows it could be done in a form factor that is not too much larger.

And the Miyoo Mini shows you could actually put a good deal more power into something the even smaller than the v90.

From what I saw it ran some Gamecube in Dolphin MMJR but struggled with the harder stuff like Metroid Prime. Once AetherSX2 came out it apparently was even able to handle some PS2 as well.
