Regarding commercial use I'd be wary of any artist that would pop-up, claiming they drew the main character/ part of the "computer-generated" image ten years ago and now wants to be compensated. It could happen if the ai decided that artist's character/image fits best in a new composition.

Oh man I hope I get accepted into the real Dall-E-2, the dall-e mini isn't enough. This poo poo is insane

Here's something that I wonder if it has any significance:
I've got some kind of sleep disorder, leads to weird things like sleep paralysis and stuff. One thing that happens once in awhile, is my alarm will go off and I'll "wake" but I can't read. I'll be staring at my phone which has the alarm going off, and I can't make heads or tails of what I'm looking at. It looks like letters/words, but it's nonsense to me. I pretty much just have to sit there staring at it, uselessly squinting until the part of my brain that can sort out the visual information wakes up.

Anyways, the text that Dall-E outputs looks exactly how I see text when I'm in that state. It's a little unnerving

this is the just the beginning of AI disruption. What happens when AI writes code? And no one needs entry level programmers ever again, why pay salaries when the software writes itself. Not sure how anyone will get their foot in the door in that industry in the near future.

You’ll need a few humans capable of analyzing the code produced, at first, to herd AI’s in the desired direction, but that will get automated pretty quick too.

the people creating these AI’s are putting themselves out of business, it’s not only going to be artists.

Hell, AI/algorithm stock trading done on behalf of a corporation that doesn’t have to employ many people will min/max profits until it’s just 3 giant cpu’s in a basement somewhere rewarding each other with squirts of abstract financial data at light speed.

I don't think that's really a disorder, we can just kind of get stuck between brain states, you might not actually be looking at your phone physically, maybe. You might just be thinking about looking at it and dreaming. I dunno, can't read your brain. Brains are weird.

But it's a commonly noted thing that to determine if you are dreaming or not to look at the time, or some text, try to remember it, and recheck it, and it's either totally different or just gibberish like you describe.

I think maybe in those states the sort of linguistic/temporal/short term memory just doesn't really register or record right.

Same sort of deal with the sleep paralysis, you are just halfway between. Body is still stuck, eyes are getting some input, so there is some real visual but also still dreaming.

It's not really an issue for me anymore, I can usually ID it and forcibly wake then reset, but sometimes that involves unintentional incoherent yelling with a big jerk. Sorry person I sleep with.

I occasionally wake up not knowing who I am or where I am and with my phone completely undecipherable. I also have occasional sleep paralysis. I don't think it's a disorder or that uncommon.

The AI just isn't literate. Any kind of scribble that vaguely resembles English text is the same to it. It might even understand that certain combinations of symbols correlate with certain images, but that's still very far away from literacy. Like, if you asked me to write some fake Chinese text it would probably look like something the AI draws, if you showed it to a Chinese person. I have a vague idea of how Chinese characters look but you probably won't find a correct one in all the vaguely Chinese looking gibberish chicken scratch I will put out.

I been to a doctor and had sleep tests and I got other typical sleep disorder symptoms, like excessive daytime drowsiness, instant REM, still trying to figure it out. The weird poo poo that happens just tends to happen more often in brains that aren't getting proper sleep. I've considered the "maybe i'm actually just asleep" angle, but I've gotten out of bed to shut off my alarm, and have been standing there holding my phone trying to decipher the weird alien script on my phone for a minute before it stopped looking like alien words

It will be interesting to see how this will change the mainstream art industry as this is further developed for the Blizzards and Pixars out there that follow a very strict style. Once a concept artist creates a "fresh new" style for a project there won't be any use of artists to draw additional art in that style if the AI can just handle that.

One thing I've noticed is that DALL.E's text looks a lot like the sort of fake text you get in commercial art, where you have something like a Paris street scene but the artist doesn't want to put in real shop names. The sort of painting that gets printed for hotel rooms or jigsaw puzzles.

I'm wondering if that's a result of it being trained on that sort of art, or as you say just generating random glyphs that look sort of like English letters.

Also it's kind of freaky it "signed" one of those Dune portraits on the previous page.

I was reading about google's imagen AI and I thought this bit about the language training was very interesting:
"Our key discovery is that generic large language models (e.g. T5), pretrained on text-only corpora, are surprisingly effective at encoding text for image synthesis: increasing the size of the language model in Imagen boosts both sample fidelity and image-text alignment much more than increasing the size of the image diffusion model."
