Yeah but this stuff was played for drama or horror, I can think of plenty of examples of this; it's recently come to be more "erotic" in line with the rise of the step-porn dominating those websites.

There are cave paintings that are designed to shift with the flickering of firelight --possibly an early form of animation. Or, anime, if you will.

I mean if you look at smut novels from the 70s it’s possible a majority of those are incest themed. As to the why of it, I dunno.

It's a fetish that if it's present and you're into it, it does it for you, and if you're not into it, it's easy enough to ignore and you can just enjoy the attractive people. That is most certainly not true of all fetishes, where if it's there you either love it or are actively repulsed by it.

the thing is, before the internet there was no such thing as weird fetish porn. you couldn't have it mailed to you, you didn't see it at the back of convenience stores, there certainly weren't jokes about it in popular media

There is a case to be made that mainstream media had more coded fetish poo poo in an era when there were fewer channels to just revel in it openly. I’ve been reading Chris Claremont’s X-Men run and have been shocked a few times at the displays of bdsm stuff. The weird horny of old science fiction is probably sublimated fetishes seeking expression to some degree.

I think another reason that fetish seems so common is that producers can just tack it on to any existing video for free by just adding some words to the title of the video. You don't actually need to get your actors to perform anything differently

I don't know how true this is, but I read in an article critiquing the monomyth that in a load of versions Oedipus never actually slept with Jocasta. It's just that we got the play as our primary source and it features the incest plot.

I think it’s about the idea of just finding your mother attractive. That idea is stupid though because Oedipus A) didn’t know she was his mother as you mentioned, and B) she was the previous King’s wife. So Oedipus was pretty much flexing where he was like “Wife of previous king? Sure this makes things easier” It’s more like whoever created the Oedipus Complex idea didn’t think it through very hard and these days everyone knows to toss out all their ideas.

Yeah, I've been reading a lot about folklore in the past few years and that's true of most stories and myths - there are a lot of variations, but only a few/one got written down and given canon status. So any arguments about inherent human traits that are based on particular instances of these stories are extremely suspect. Freud came up with his ideas in a time in European folklore research where it was still popular to think of folktales as degenerated remnants of a truer initial myths.
