I guess I should say it was one of the most enjoyable films I've seen this year, but I don't think of it as high cinema. It was basically a toned down Rick and Morty. I just loved the cinematography.

I've seen a lot of comparisons made between that show and the film, but I've never seen an episode of Rick and Morty so I don't have any base of comparison. The movie was just too wacky for my personal taste.

I also don't enjoy Wes Anderson films for similar reasons. Like they're very self-aware of their humor and what they're doing, and that's not a style I'm usually particularly in to. [edit] That probably doesn't make sense, but I struggle to articulate how I feel about movies a lot lol.

That I'll agree with. I never got into his movies, just don't draw me in. I did enjoy Bottle Rocket and Rushmore, but the rest I just feel bleh about.

Just watched Dual on Amazon Prime.

Boring and I'm unsure what if anything it was trying to say. Every character's flat affect and bluntness made it feel like a worse less interesting version of The Lobster.

Sweet jesus, Joe Pera Talks with You is giving me feelings I've only felt with Nathan for You although they're very different shows. Deft mix of the funny and the earnest. Just finishing the first season now but it'd have to take a major dump to sour my opinion, drat. That The Who ep had me loving dying laughing, big recommend!

I hope there's a fourth season eventually

Adult swim's stuff is wild, I downloaded the app on my Roku a couple weeks ago and watched the whole The Trial with Tim Heidecker and it was way funnier than I thought it would be considering the length, I guess it's on youtube too. I love Tim but I didn't think that whole thing would be as entertaining as it was the whole way through and goddamn was I delightfully surprised lol

You should watch How To with John Wilson if you haven't yet. It's a pretty perfect blend of Joe Pera and Nathan for You.

Joe Pera is better because it's perfect but How to with John Wilson is the only show I've seen that gives off a similar vibe.

They are both amazing and well worth a watch. Strongly suggest not bingeing. Small doses so as to be savored.

gently caress. Ahhh. It's always gonna be a King Hu film even tho he was pioneering this poo poo in the 60s. His all-around best film may be A Touch of Zen but if I had to pick one my personal fave of his will always be The Fate of Lee Khan.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEwZK9AJgmo
I dunno if it's on streaming tho. Most King Hu is scattered on either the Criterion Channel or Arrow Player.

(But for more modern stuff, any of the ang lee or zhang yimou flicks of the last 20 years are solid, hero, crouching tiger, etc...even like the more recent yimou one Shadow on Netflix was a lot of fun)
