It's occurred to me that I should really give System Shock 2 another playthrough at some point. I have the GOG version. Are there any good mods that can be recommended?

Mysteries of the Sith is for people who thought Jedi Knight was too easy and any future games were for babies. There’s some fun and cool levels in there and it’s the only other game which uses the JK engine (which I love), but holy poo poo they were determined to make you suffer for playing it.
Not true, actually! Star Wars: Droidworks also uses it. Unfortunately, Star Wars: Droidworks also doesn't work properly on any computer past like a Pentium !!! 600EB (physics calculations break down with faster processors, which doesn't do crazy poo poo like Skyrim over 60 FPS (motion sickness warning), but does bork the game's "only certain droid designs can go up specific inclines" calculations and prevent any robot from moving on anything short of perfectly level ground), and it doesn't offer 3D acceleration like Jedi Knight does. Give and take, I guess.

I wanna say Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine uses the Sith Engine too - a quick cursory Google search seems to imply it does. As does Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace, apparently? Huh, never knew that. Guess I have a complete Sith Engine set then.

Can't recommend any mods other than the texture/model ones, but going for a huge gimmick run can be very satisfying. I've done "all energy guns marine, all the time" who carries like 3 energy pistols and picks up the psi skill that stops weapon degradation for "free" ammo when it's active, and the "no skills purchased other than psi skills and core stats", which was rather fresh not having any access to hacking.

edit: also with the gift of foresight, stuff like the mod skill actually becomes a good investment for very specific optimizations. Maybe even Repair, god forbid.

If you know someone else who has played through System Shock 2 I encourage playing through co-op. Co-op immersive sims are rare and it's unfortunate, the mechanics are perfect for it. Make sure someone picks PSI and turn the difficulty up.

It uses a heavily-modified version, naturally renamed Jones.

A few bits and pieces of Sith, particularly the 3d model system, were also incorporated into the GrimE engine used by Grim Fandango and that one bad Monkey Island game.

I much preferred Action Half-Life over AQ2 just because the sniper rifle was so dominant in the latter but it's cool that this is getting a new release.

Did Action HL ever get a stand-alone release or is it still needed to "mod" Half-Life?

It's still tethered to Half-Life IIRC. They also tried to make a source port but I haven't followed in years so I don't know if that went anywhere after its initial release.

I picked up Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem because I saw I could get a little off since I already own Serious Sam 4, and it definitely shows that it was made by the fans. There are a lot of great situations like the end of the first map, with a multi-story building and "anti-gravity" pads shooting you up to different floors while the room gets flooded with enemies. General combat and level design is much improved over Sam 4 and they throw skill points at you like crazy (since this is a shorter game). This time around I'm taking greater advantage of dual wielding which is still really powerful. . . that would've made a lot of Sam 4 much easier for me.

Has Not Actually Done Cocaine
So Postal Brain Damaged just got released and since it was being offered at a slight sale I figure might as well give it a shot and so far it's actually pretty good, it's got an interesting aesthetic, controls well(it even has bunny hopping of the "can achieve ludicrous speeds" type), and the weapons I've found so far have all been good too(even if the shotgun is blatantly stolen from Doom Eternal's Super Shotgun*) and does a surprisingly good job of welding together standard "Boomer Shooter" gameplay with aspects of the standard Postal open world shenanigans

*they admit as much in the weapon description

The latest patch definitely fixed a lot of the performance issues but it still needs a lilbitta work. Definitely worth 20 new ones to support some hard working, passionate indie devs. It's a fun few hours.
