As a contrast to this particular freelance nightmare, I recently listened to this interview with Keith Kappel about his work on the FFG's Star Wars RPG. He spends a lot of time talking about the process and how he interacts with the leads on the books he's written for. He does mention that the pay isn't very good, but otherwise seems pretty happy with how everything is handled. The Star Wars RPG is about as corporate as an RPG can get, what with a company like Asmodee in charge and everything having to be run by Disney as well, but it definitely sounds like a more professional environment than whatever was going on in DnD streamer nightmare land.

Isn't the peak of the Maslow pyramid stuff that's nice to have in a fulfilling manner but not actually foundational and which you can do without if you must? Putting yourself at the peak means you're the least important part of the person's life if the pursuit of that peak is compromising (or compromised by lack of) the lower tiers.

I mean, it's worth stating that Satine, in five years, managed to go from a byline to the chief guest of honor at Origins. She worked in a very public position for the biggest company in the industry (and a big media company, period), and constantly gotbroadly boosted in a industry--that while still small--has definitely gotten a lot more cultural reach. Whatever you might say about her (and people sure have had a lot to say, as it turns out), she's extremely good at self-promotion. Of course, we're learning a lot of that promotion was on the backs of people she managed to exploit and hurt, along with Jamison. She took over his GM advice show at Geek & Sundry, they've worked together, interacted extensively, and been very publicly friends on social media. I don't know if I'd say he was her big break, but his promotion of her is probably a big part of why we're talking about her right now. How much he knew about her behavior is another story, of course, but it's trivial to find numerous pictures and posts with them being intensely friendly with each other.

She was pretty well known before all of that, Probably a like implicit cosign from being around Mercer and Co in the mid to late 2010s , but yeah I was hearing about Satine before she even started getting to like the Geek and Sundry stuff. Like she was a name I would hear online in gaming/comic circles in like 2011/2012. Mostly in the form of the dumb loving "WOAH GUYS PORN STAR IS INTO NERD poo poo", but yeah. I think she hosted a D&D game with porn stars that got a fair amount of press in the early 10s.

It’s hard to say what Mercer knew or didn’t know, but 99% of the time, people like Satine and Jamison will kiss the rear end of people who can help advance them in the nicest way possible. It’s not coincidence that all of the stories out there involve people who don’t really provide opportunity of advancement for them.
