They think they’re saying ‘these workers shouldn’t be on strike’ but they might as well be saying ‘everyone else should go on strike too’

Train drivers may or may not be the highest paid transport staff in the country, but it's not just a strike about pay and it's not for the most part even a strike about train drivers. Adonis just has no clue what he's talking about.

StarkingBarfish posted:Nothing to see here, just an incredibly poo poo take from labour grandee Andrew Adonis: https://twitter.com/Andrew_Adonis/status/1535297937487585282 It's not even the drivers that are on strike - it's pretty much every job except the drivers. Which doesn't stop people rolling out steamy takes about drivers being paid £60k to 'sit on a seat and press buttons' and so on. Strikes really do bring out such a sewer outfall of reactionary and blinkered opinions. Like "it's not right that a few thousand people can stop working and hold the country to ransom " Gee, if not doing their job brings the country to a grinding hold it sounds like it's pretty important and key to a lot of economic production. They should probably be well compensated or something... Mebh posted:I never got the whole doubling down insanity poo poo people do when their chosen idol turns out to be a moron. As well as not wanting to admit their wrong, I think this also happens when people support figures, not ideas. Most of us ITT are happy to move on from Jeremy Corbyn as a political figure and can happily criticise various things he did and didn't do because we didn't support him because he was Jeremy Corbyn - we supported him because he was proposing things, ideas, changes and systems that we thought were good. We weren't supporting him because he wasn't someone else, because of his background, his life story, because of the way he spoke or the way he dressed, because he went to the right school, because he was Forensic or because he said funny things on a panel show once. If you throw your lot in with the person rather than their ideas you end up having to justify all sorts of their failings and shortcomings to keep up the illusion because there's no inner structure to your support.

I still put a lot of hope in the idea that the developments of the last couple of decades with LGBT rights, constitutes a technological change. In the sense that it has happened not just because everyone magically decided it was a good idea, but rather because actual technology and subsequently, organizing, has improved in ways that help LGBT+ people get together and create communities that are better than the hegemonic norm, and being part of those drives people to expand them into wider society. So, while obviously all the shitheads are organized too and try to use whatever they can to keep their control up, they are reliant on that approach to get anywhere. It is hard to really see why you would want to join the transphobe club unless you're already hosed up in some way, especially if you're LGB because it is so very much easier to just get on board with the more inclusive, comprehensive worldview, than to go through the mental gymnastics required for the alternative.
