I mean, to me, the ultimate band would be Gore/Gahan/Wilder/Clarke again with someone else to ground them.

It's never going to happen.

Pretty sure Clarke is happy being an unemotional DJ in Erasure. The story I heard was that Depeche Mode blew up big time when "Just Can't Get Enough" went crazy during the Speak & Spell era. Interviewers were asking Vince what sort of socks he liked to wear and he just noped the gently caress out.

I'm not sure why Wilder left. My head canon is that he was miserable during the Faith and Devotion tour when Gahan was eyeball deep into the H, but I think it may have had to do with the perceived lack of respect he got? Who knows. I'm surprised he never tried to patch things up with the other three. It's not like Recoil did much. I liked that first album with the track featuring Toni Halliday and the cover of "Faith Healer" wtih McCarthy but yeah ... not much going on. I think he played piano on "Somebody" at a benefit Gore did. That's may be the last time they did stuff together.

A fifteen month tour would probably cause most people to lose it. I watched some interview with him when I got into Recoil and he seemed extremely disenchanted with the modern music industry. “If I wasn’t already successful, I could never do this” was the basic gist. I liked subHuman at least

Just had a surprise Pig EP drop (at least a surprise to me), and I cannot stop listening to Baptise, Bless, and Bleed from it. It starts off a little slow, but once the chorus starts it seems well paced. Also, just realized that Raymond Watts and others with early 80's starts are likely older than 60 by now. It is on spotify, but here is the song for ease of clicking:

Ahh this is so good. I'd absolutely lose it if I heard this live. Raymond is such a gem and a real sweetheart. When I met him, his first question was asking me for input on his show and what I'd like to see. What can i say? He's a real artist who decided to let loose and have fun in his old age. "Umm... I really liked Wrecked..." (half his set was Wrecked already, but he was nice about that)

Old age, he's only 60!

Raymond is amazing. I met him at the VIP thing back in 2018 or so, and then a year later was wandering around near the venue trying to find a snack before the Killing Joke/PIG show and heard someone yell my name. It was Raymond! We chatted a bit before he had to go off to soundcheck. He's delightful. I did a shirt design for him too, and it brings me delight whenever I see a photo of him wearing it.

There's so many great acts hitting up festivals this summer. I was supposed to go to Mechanismus but just had surgery last week so no travel for me. And then the Terminus lineup came out and also loving rules. IAMX headlining! Some of my friends are playing both festivals so I'm bummed I can't go out and support them.

i don't think there were many, but this seems to be the most notable one for getting on the dark city soundtrack

definitely more of a rock thing here

for their first album i can tell they were listening to a lot of the mission, fields of the nephilim, sisters of mercy, etc.

A polite little mouse!
This was one of my favourites: A Terminal Posture, from Perth in the early 1990s. They had three tapes and I was shocked to hear stuff this well produced come out of our local scene. I interviewed them in my indie rock zine at the time: p1, p2, p3

The original recordings are thirty years unavailable, but the singer put up a pile of their tracks on SoundCloud.

Norway had Zeromancer, Apoptygma Berzerk, Icon of Coil and a few imitators of those. All very poppy, none that local to me. I think Icon of Coils third album, Machines are Us, is pretty close to peak futurepop, and much better than anything Andy Laplegua did as Combichrist, but aside from that not much for me to love.

I need to give Machines Are Us another go. It felt like a bit of a letdown after their first two, but if other scene bands are a barometer, a lot of the later stuff I didn't like new, aged really well. But yeah, wow Combichrist is a colossal disappointment.

I think if you're doing the goth rock / metal thing and want my respect, there should be bats positively flying out of my screen when I watch the video and the musicians crawling out of haunted tombs. This is a tradition that operates on the level of aesthetics and I gotta feel it to believe it. Welcome to my hall-of-mirrors funhouse of madness.

INTERESTING. I've only heard live cuts from late era Coil live thing, which I think was released just prior to Balance passing. This one is also late era. 06/11/04 and he did in November.

I'm deeply curious as to what their live sound was like (if they even did that) in say the Love's Secret Domain era.

Saw Front 242 on Friday and Saturday night.

Now that JLDM is all better, they're back to doing live shows and it's legit great. I first saw them in 2008 as I was too young for the early days and then not hip enough to have figured out they were a band to see in the 90s or early 00s - but it was definitely the best show I've seen them put on of the ones I've caught from 08 onwards, just super tight. Setlist is really solid as well. Some pretty clear old-school choices, along with three actual new tracks (!). Two of the new tracks are real good, one I wasn't as much a fun of but YMMV. To me, the setlist choices very much felt like a deliberate statement of acknowledging what made Front 242 as influential and popular as they were/are. I guess sometimes people see detailed setlists as spoilers so just in case there's a very very clear focus on the earlier stuff. There are no tracks from Up Evil/Off or Pulse, but tbh I had no problem with that, even though I like those albums.

Appreciate their tour has been postponed and dates cancelled multiple times due to covid and then JLDM's health, but if it comes near you, definitely worth catching.
