There was that translated quote a page or two back from a guy in the DPR about having to break out the ancient 152mm guns and ammunition, that went something along the lines of "you'll know by the tenth round" [if it worked or not]. I wondered if this is what they meant. I'm not wondering anymore.

I'm in Berlin for a study abroad tour and it's pretty weird reading about the actions of the German government and their lack of genuine aid for Ukraine and comparing that to the Gen Z/millenial Germans I've met through this program that are very much in favor of helping Ukraine. Might just be because the organizations we've met with are full of socially conscious and civic minded folks though, half of them are non-profits.

https://www.proekt.media/en/investigation-en/names-of-the-russian-military-officers/ A reminder of how much casual brutality is a part of the normal SOP of the Russian military, even towards themselves. quote:“Mlechnik” is considered a hellish place among conscripts. Parents of soldiers who served in the 64th Brigade in 2017-2019 say that the food in the unit is poor , it is cold in the barracks, and the uniforms issued are old and out of size. “Before some inspections, some of the soldiers are hidden in the baths, forests and other places for some reason. Maybe they don’t want to frighten the inspectors with the soldiers’ appearance since their uniforms, boots and physical condition leave much to be desired, » says the mother of one of the conscripts.

Except both of the PoWs are married to Ukrainian citizens, moved there before the war, are permanent residents (one is actually a dual citizen), and have been in the Ukrainian army for like 4-6 years. I've never heard of the British government prosecuting people for serving in the FFL, and God knows there's plenty of Brits in that.

Every country has fringe career politicians who find a niche constituency and stick to it, there's nothing special going on in Ireland there. Also everyone in Europe has far more recent experience of aggressors trying to stamp out their culture than Ireland has. Ireland today has small neutral country privilege like Switzerland and Austria. e: by which I mean they have no military threats and no reason for 'what about the war in x' to ever be a dominant part of the political conversation. It’s quite hard to reconcile English language nationalist fiction to other language nationalist fiction because the US and UK collectively won the 19th and 20th centuries; their flavour of dickwaving fiction isn’t revanchist. Most countries have tons of “no actually this is how we won” popular fiction because nobody is immune to the seductive lure of feeling like a military winner. It’s equally dumb in every case.

The fiction about demonizing and destroying your neighbors is bad but the other thing is just a take on “A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur’s Court”. Wasn’t there a US series about a military unit that goes back in time from around a decade before that and does similar things?
