That's because that one is a baby. Adult crested porcupines can get up to 60 lbs, making them one of the largest rodents in the world. North American porcupines are about the same length, but only half as massive.

I had no idea that species got up into Europe

Edit:

“Crested porcupines have been known to collect thousands of bones that they find at night. They are mostly nocturnal, and they may wander upon the skeletons of many animals. They collect these bones, and store them in an underground chamber, or cave.”

Alright this one’s stumping me. SW PA, under wood in mulch in my yard. Thought it was a roach nymph at first but I don’t think that’s it. Has chonky back legs. Seemed to be interacting with these ants, rubbing antennae with and all. Absolutely refused to stop moving for a photo.

They're out tonight in Pittsburgh! I think they're all the most common J-flight ones. A few have wandered inside the last few weeks, unless I'm confusing them with some beetle imposter.

(Is this finally the year the several Western PA critter posters go poke about some park together?)

There was also this thing hanging out in a local park's garden; guessing it's a ladybug nymph going by previous posts but not entirely sure, this is in the PNW US:

:actually: it's a laduybug larva.

The immature stages of insects that are hemimetabolous(no pupal stage, immatures look more or less like the adults) are called nymphs, while holometabolous insects goes through larval stages and a pupal stage before hatching as a winged adult.

A very widespread European species, Myrmecophilus acervorum, was described as a new species of cockroach in 1799. Later research showed that it belonged in the Orthoptera, with crickets.

That's an odd noise for a squirrel to be making. And I thought the ones in my yard were grating!

Nothing too exciting here lately, but I've run into a few neat critters.

This zebra jumper has been guarding my kitchen. Check out those chompers!

There was also a crab-like spider patrolling the bathroom for a few weeks, but my cat found it and that was the end of that.

Probably about to settle down for some metamorphizing.

It took me way too long to figure out what this mess of a former animal was. Thinking muskrat based on the tail.

I once went outside and as I walked out a squirrel was on the awning above my front door screaming at me just like that one is. I assumed it was being protective of nearby offspring, but it didn't move and just sat there yelling at me from like 5 feet away so it was kind of a weird experience.

Holy cow, I always assumed that was just a bird making a weird rear end noise. My squirrels do this often, and the 'chipchipchipchip' noise.

squirrels doing that HREH noise is a very common thing around here. they think they're so tough.
