My mother told me that as a kid, and it was actual years before I could parse what it was supposed to mean. My best guess even now is that most languages in use are read top to bottom, left to right, so people to whom the saying makes inherent sense are starting from an invisible point on the top-left of the knob.

I mean yeah I guess most people start at the top, especially since 12 (which indicates the beginning of a new set of hours/day) is at the top and moving 'past' it is the way time moves naturally, to the right.

Just remember "clocky locky" instead and trust that to everybody else, the direction the 12 o'clock is moving is more important than the direction the 6 o'clock is moving.

Like I've talked to people who didn't understand the saying specifically because they didn't use the northernmost point looking from above as a reference point. Thinking about it now, I also remember having to actually think through the saying in high school auto shop because sometimes I was reaching towards a bolt from the underside of the fixture.
