their consumer-grade printers requires you to first connect them to the internet because gently caress you. the ink subscription is optional but of course HP will do everything they can to get you to click YES or whatever. after they get online you can change them to just print over USB. they even ship them with a plastic plug in the USB port and a warning sticker to not plug it in before getting the printer online.

for at least some of them you can still download a basic driver and print right away over USB without any bullshit but clearly there's a bunch of pitfalls and the conclusion remains the same: don't buy HP inkjets

where does windows, like, store bluetooth device data?

i'm having a problem connecting my dualshock 4 over bluetooth to windows 11. this is the same controller and bluetooth adapter i have used a lot on this pc and this win11 and everything, but i was using it with something else and now windows refuses to connect to it. it's a bt4.0 bcm20702 based usb adapter and a dualshock 4 v2.

if i boot into linux it pairs and works perfectly fine, and it works fine in macos, and on a ps4, but win11 refuses.

i've gone in and removed the controller from the "devices and printers" list, removed it from device manager, deleted the keys from the registry and searched the registry and deleted anything with the controller's address in it, but it doesn't work.

what happens is normally you go to add device, put the controller in pairing mode, it shows up on the list and you choose it, windows then connects. what is actually happening is when i go to add device, as soon as i get the controller in pairing mode the controller immediately pops up in the device list as paired, and it usually doesn't show up in the add device list, and despite windows claiming it's paired, the controller never connects and it doesn't work.

the few times it does show up and i can choose it, windows just almost immediately says some unhelpful poo poo like "please try to connect your device again".

like i said, i've used this controller over bluetooth on this install of windows many times before so i know it should work, and it all does work in linux on the same hardware. also, i am able to connect other devices over bluetooth in windows without a problem, it's only this specific controller, and i can confirm that this is a genuine sony ds4.

since the controller keeps coming back as "paired" when i try to connect, even though i've removed it from the device listings, i'm thinking windows still has something somewhere listing this as a paired device. i think some bt adapters save internal lists of connected devices (maybe?) but i don't think this one does.

otherwise i'm not sure what the problem is. any ideas?

computer problem success stories, sort of:

was never really able to figure out what was preventing windows from sleeping or how to fix it, but got a PCI USB expansion to get more USB C ports. plugging stuff into the A ports instead of the motherboard ports lets windows sleep vov

this isn’t really a solution to the problem you’re asking for BUT I was in your boat and I got an xbox controller (current gen but not the fancy one) and using it in windows is night and day. having native support makes life a million times better and the controller is also just extremely great

it was a good solution for me at least

i mean yea that would fix my controller needs, i already have a powera xbox one controller but i really prefer the dualshock 4.

xbox controller on windows is good. i went back to my ancient 360 era windows usb one cos i got sick of dealing with batteries and wireless issues (altho those were pretty minor) and it’s very needs suiting

i kinda keep meaning to buy a new gen xbox controller, they seem slick and are bluetooth and i like the blue one, but what i have now is Good Enough

poo poo yeah i got it working

at some point windows detected it as "unknown device" and after removing that, it started pairing properly again. i have no idea what i did to fix it, tho

it does suck that you need to fork out for the battery pack for rechargeable but once you’ve done that you’ve got an extremely nudes suiting controller

try the xbone “elite” controller… once I got over the l337-ness of it (and the price), it’s by far the best controller I’ve ever used. The 4 paddle buttons on the back are a total game changer

I dunno I like the dualshock layout more myself

Also I couldn't get the pairing to work for months on win 11, then I tried again last week after reading this thread and, well, it worked? Huh.

hmm

I have been toying with a second controller so maybe me and kids can play game against each other. can two controllers join to the same bluetooth dongle?

its worse

once I was using the xbox controller and I was moving my character around with the left stick (which isn't on the same back-front plane as it is with the playstation controller) and I needed to use the d-pad, and right then I realised the genius of the design, because I could keep left thumb on left stick, and use right thumb on d-pad effortlessly. this move is awkward on playstation controller

git apologist
Jun 4, 2003

it’s not genius design it’s exceedingly obvious design

the ps controllers are just like that cos sony rushed out an original psone controller with analogue sticks bolted on after nintendo proved analogue controls were good with sm64. for some reason sony has not moved the primary control to the resting position of the left thumb in the interning 25 years
