It's funny how "look at all the different kinds of potato chips we have" is such a high profile fallback in praise of Capitalism. This is the crowning achievement, this is the threat of what you'll lose out on if you change to Communism or Socialism: 140 kinds of marginally different flavors across 16 brands all owned by the same 1 conglomerate company. Hmmm yes, I could have universal healthcare, reasonable income, and human rights, but then I'm pretty sure I would only have one or two kinds of potato chips. I think we know that's not worth it!

Historically the self-proclaimed "Communists" didn't provide those things either, especially human rights. EDIT: This statement is in no way a defense of capitalism.

If you ignore what happened to the people that fell through the cracks. Which was a lot of people.

Not to continue the books we read in high school derail, but I had to read Der Vorleser for my last year of high school German. Except I was the only one taking that class so I just had to read it all to the teacher, out loud, in German, and as bad as that was for me, I cannot imagine how grim that was for her.

Like half way through and I was like wow this is A LOT of introspective whining about not getting closure on his first relationship in his teens and then it almost turned to outright comedy when he just offhandedly mentions that he's now been married and divorced and has a kid and he's still not quite over how she just left him like that.

I’m sorry, why did your high school German teacher have you read a novel about an older woman sexually exploiting a teen boy? Surely there are other short novels about recent German history written in fairly simple declarative sentences she could have chosen for this uncomfortable tête-à-tête

My German teacher had the bright idea to have us all read the entirety of Wilhelm Tell with roles, with the amount of text you got to read depending on how bad you were at reading. So all of us has to sit through the worst readers stumbling their way through page-long monologues, which I'm sure made those kids really interested in literature and reading.

Heath posted:(brain firing on all cylinders) what if we put the homeless underground. They technically won't be on the streets if they're under the streets. But yeah, it comes with such fun issues as: Everyone dies if there's a fire Good luck with your plumbing lol Radon More radon Having to dig out a hole rather than just moving air aside People like seeing the sky every so often Plus it's not like building underground conjures up free real estate. You can't just build your own Homeless Vault(tm) under other people's already-existing buildings.
