Story Musgrave flew his last shuttle mission in 1996 at the age of 61. So I don't think that Ed flying is outrageous or anything.

And I feel like a crazy outlier that I don't hate the Karen/Danny storyline. I mean it was definitely a what the gently caress kind of feeling when it happened, even tho it had been well telegraphed. But I feel it's in character with Karen at the time and Danny is just carrying on the tradition of Stevens hosed uped-ness.

Optimistically, the continuation of the Karen/Danny storyline could have some positive outcomes. It's a sign that the writers aren't limiting themselves to what's "safe" or "good". The show might be free to make bolder statements if they don't have to cave to the audience's expectation of being "fun to watch" or "comfortable on the stomach"

on the other hand, it's not great that they're keeping on with it because it truly blows rear end

Worse, this is the early-90s with the rise of Rush Limbaugh and Pat Buchanan getting regular guest spots on CNN. I wonder if they'll do an analog of Rush's idiotic "America under Occupation" or whatever his schtick was during the Clinton Years. With an outed Ellen I would guess it would make "Shrillary" look mild.

Space CEO turns out to be evil,
Soviet, NASA & Helios missions all run into issues and have to cooperate to complete the mission with a joint 'first' landing
Margo gets revealed as a soviet spy and has to resign in disgrace
Ed and Danielle's skills are needed to compliment each other and the relationship repairs after Ed apologises for being a racist old man

Yeah, my bet at this point is that Big Love Elon will turn out to be some combination of over-confident, callous and moronic about things like celestial mechanics. Season 2 wound up being a bunch of disasters that they managed to wrap up together into a sort of package by the season finale, so hopefully (?) they're aiming for something similar with the Mars missions. Though it doesn't have to be the finale necessarily, they have to set the stage for season 4 :haw: Venus? Jovian moons?

I have to say I don't hate the way the Karen/Danny storyline is turning out. It's quite clear that Karen isn't into it (which was my biggest concern because that's very... ew), but Danny is - and more importantly they're putting physical distance between the two so it'll become more of an Ed/Danny thing.

I see the private trip being more "Nasa/the Soviets have prepared for years to do this and you've thrown this mission together" than anyone being evil. Nasa and the Soviets have been (quietly) working together to try and avoid any disasters, but Helios hasn't, so I suspect that will be what goes wrong on the way to Mars.

That'd be an interesting way for Margo to get outed actually. Some massively obscure engineering problem crops up on the Helios mission and nearly kills them all - NASA flags the problem as being why Helios should not be up there eg "This took the best NASA scientists working on this very specific problem and only this specific design avoids that issue" and everyone realises that the Soviets also have that very specific design.

Not to mention they've decided to go years before the establishment have decided it's a good idea. Nasa/the Soviets are either going to have to cut a lot of corners to go up sooner, hope the Helios mission goes wrong/is delayed or straight up sabotage it, which I can't see Nasa doing but certainly the Soviets would.

I thought the point was that NASA and the Soviets would have to build (even design?) their 2+ - year craft for the Mars voyage, shoot all that crap into orbit and assemble it etc., and they'd decided to aim for the launch window 4 years away, but Big Love bought the hotel which he at least thinks can be made into the ship itself, so all that's left is bringing their super methane cannons into orbit and bing bing bong, next window is 2 years away so suck it NASA?

The Danny/Karen/Ed thing is real lovely and I’m not stoked on the inevitable Danny/Ed Mars drama. The show needs to invest in developing new characters each season so we don’t have unrealistically old people running around forever. Even Danielle is 48 at the start of this season, which is appropriate for her role but she ought to be among the oldest astronauts in the show now. Three decades into the shows timeline we have exactly two youngish astronauts, Aleida who’s story is good but she’s mostly an engineer who gets to go to the moon cause it’s routine now, and Danny who’s only here for the worst plot line in the show.

Also, I demand more Wayne Cobb! Did they just decide to graft the “concerned spouse” vibe onto Danielle’s husband and call it a day

Aleida's introduction was great because it demonstrated how new characters could be added to the show each season, of different backgrounds, driven by the impact that previous seasons' characters had made.

Unfortunately, they haven't done that this season yet, nor has Aleida had much to do. Hopefully we'll meet a young Helios engineer who has to learn some lessons the hard way, or someone on Ellen's campaign who makes it through her tragic downfall emboldened.

Instead so far we've gotten many minutes of man-pain with the World's Oldest Astronaut. One upside is that the chances of Ed Baldwin dying this season are increasing.

Yeah Valve is what I had in mind when Afro Musky started with that nonsense. Good luck with your Half Life 3 Osprey engine, I think I'll rather go work on porn satellite subscription technology. Also lol that their offices are just straight up 2020 tech offices :effort:

That said, slapping some engines on an existing habitat is probably a good way to go here. It's already beta-tested so just make sure the engines don't blow up.

I’m no spaceologist but it strikes me as probably a terrible idea.

I’m assuming the station was built pretty much in place, and not designed for long-term translational acceleration.

It’s in Earth orbit which I would guess offers some protection against Space Stuff that won’t be there during interplanetary flight.

But I don’t really know what I’m talking about.

It's probably fine? It would need to be sturdy enough to handle the rotation so it's not that delicate. It would mostly depend on the g forces from the engines. And there's no reason to do high g acceleration, a plasma or nuclear engine that can do lower thrust for a longer time is better for traveling long distance. The fun thing is that if it's rotating while accelerating your direction of gravity is going to be angled instead of directly into the floor. You'd probably want to leave the interior set up for rotational gravity so everything would be pretty funky under acceleration.

Rotation also lets you gradually slow down the spin as you go and have a less abrupt transition into 0.38 g. Even more helpful on the way home.
