The Rock isn't a "good actor", he's just good at being The Rock. And very rarely that works in a feature length movie.

Anyway, just finished rewatching Thriller. I don't know which release I "acquired" back in my college days but the uncut VinSyn release had some moments I don't remember. Like the scenes where she kills her johns or the ending where she kills Tony with the horse.

I think it's possible that the version I saw originally was a combination of the American cut with the eye stabbing scene and porn inserts from the Swedish cut.

If recall correctly the eye stabbing scene is part of the porn cut and doesn't appear in the other one. Well, specifically the close up because obviously her eye gets stabbed out in both versions.

It's a gnarly eye stabbing too. I don't usually get squicked about gore, but that one got me.

It wasn't as bad as I remember. I know it was a real cadaver, but I was all anticipating it and hiding my eyes, but I peeked and it was like two seconds and it's so uncanny that it didn't even register as "real". I think it'd be even harder to watch if it was just a special effect with fake gore.

I did not know that, that explains why it looked so real :rubby:

The eye stabbing in John Wick III was so much worse. Part of that's because it was so unexpected and it happened in the first five minutes of the movie. I was still genuinely shocked. A whole bunch of movies in recent years have surprised me by not being NC-17. Off the top of my head there's John Wick III to an extent, Mother!, and Midsommar.

All in all I think I have a harder time watching the eye slice from Un Chien Andalou. It's a cow's eye but they really go for it, just showing that eye juice pouring right out of there.

I like pre-Fast and Furious, The Rock. He would play a bad guy, a dude who failed and got beat up a lot and didn’t look like an action figure from the 90’s. Now he sucks and is probably going to be president one day.

I hear my liberal friends say they would like him to be president, then I point out that he's a republican and that they clearly know nothing of his politics, and they all look a little dejected when I say that.

That Young Rock show has done wonders for his already sterling public image and was based around being a “tell-all” interview for his presidential run sometime in the 2030’s. Inevitability has never felt so true.

~Bad Opinions~

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a complaint about VS’s transfers. They always do an amazing job, especially considering how crusty some of the source material they get is. Maybe the only complaint I hear is sometimes a release is a little bare for the price, but usually their editions are the definitive ones. They try to produce something for every release, or at least scrape together as much archive material as possible.

:pwn: :pwn: :pwn: :pwn: :pwn:
Speaking of VS transfers, please note that the 101 Films release of Tammy (available here) appears to be entirely the VS edition; the feature and every extra has the VS tag, and a quick comparison to the extras of the VS edition shows the same lineup. So if you have a multi-region player (it is locked) and want a more sumptuous release in a slipbox and a booklet, give that one a consideration.

I meant to do a writeup back when I got and watched it, it was fun, I can't complain. It definitely leans into the absurdity, though the guy who plays the jerk was quite emphatic about how straight he and Paul Walker played their roles.

Edit: Only complaint about the edition was the lack of inner print/reversible art; it's remarkable how much a blank white interior really sticks out in a Scanavo case, and how rarely you see that. I don't think I have any other Scanavo case release without an inner print. It isn't a dealbreaker or even really a true negative, just noting it. I don't know if the VS edition has an inner print but even if so, I would go with this one, for the slipbox and booklet alone. And again, it is Region B locked.

I watched Scared to Death over the weekend. Interestingly enough, it came with a bonus disc that wasn't listed on the back. The bonus disc clearly states that it contains a restoration that was not done by VS.

I watched the VS restoration, but I am curious how the other one stacks up, but I'm lazy and have too much of a backlog to watch the same movie twice in the span of a couple days.

Amazon sometimes has them in their boutique buy 2 get 1. I think that's how I got Day of the Beast (which is a must buy IMO)

EDIT: I watched One-Armed Boxer from Arrow and really enjoyed that. I've been trying to track down Masters of the Flying Guillotine, I know 2 is coming, but is the first available anywhere? Doesn't appear it is.

Day of the beast is exactly what I'm eyeing (saw it on DVD decades ago)

I ended up grabbing it at DD, with a promo code it came to 30 shipped, vs 35 + shipping everywhere else.

I try not to go over 25 but I'll make exceptions sometimes and I doubt I'll do any better waiting

It also helps that I haven't gone to a theater since feb 2020 and discs have replaced tickets as deductions, so I have an excuse
