At least they waited until Afghanistan was over so we didn't repeat the M16 while repeating Vietnam.

Senate Defense Authorization Bill Halts Half of Navy’s Planned Ship Retirements House Appropriators Want Navy to Save 5 Littoral Combat Ships From Decommissioning quote:The bill “directs a report on alternate uses of these vessels, such as missions in the [U.S. Southern Command] and [U.S. Africa Command] areas of responsibility; and permits the decommissioning of four ships, which would also allow the Navy and the Defense Security Cooperation Agency to explore the possibility of transferring them to partner nations,” according to a summary from the committee. Looks like the US Congress will force the USN to keep the LCS among others.

Yeah its the same reasoning we keep building tanks despite the army not wanting anymore of them than we have already, politicians just want to keep milking that MIC cashcow on behalf of defense contractors.

quote:In comparison to sport parachutes, military parachutes have very little maneuverability. The 82nd Airborne use two models, the MC1-1B with vents controlled by toggle lines that allow 360 degree turns and some forward motion, and the unvented T10, which can only be directed to a small degree "by spilling air out one side of the canopy or the other." "Airborne students make two jumps with [the MC1-1B] parachute, but they are not likely to use it much after that. Almost everyone in the 82nd jumps with the good old T10" (Halberstadt 1988:125-126). I was told the use of the less maneuverable T10 was considered the best method of minimizing mid-air collisions, although it obviously puts severe limitations on the paratrooper's ability to pick the landing spot.

Our drat generals keep loading our troops up in heavy armor, and they’re fat-rolling all over the place. Shameful.

I watched Top Gun Maverick yesterday and there's something almost Ur-Fascist in the way that the movie tries to drive home this point of 'a piloted plane is still better than a drone because of the human element' as well as 'a better pilot can overcome a technologically-superior plane' as part of the fictional mystique of the American military... ... but in the real world of Ukraine they're hyping up these Memeraktar drones and those smaller switchblade drones and HIMARS and all this high-tech poo poo that's supposed to win the war against Russia, which is constantly portrayed as being the more primitive force
