The local climate also has a huge impact, note that all the "stealth" performance model 3s are the older version without heat pumps. I don't believe any more stealth performances have been made since the batch I got mine from in mid 2020. My lifetime is 284 Wh/Mi (only 8000 miles though) in the upper midwest, but in good weather around the 70s to 80s I can easily get consumption down below 240 Wh/Mi and in some cases as low as 200 Wh/Mi, but in winter it ranges from ~280 on a good day to 350+ on a bad one. The EPA rating for this particular configuration is around 242 Wh/Mi.

I was thinking I was going to put 265/40R18s on the 3 but it seems like that may be a pretty large range hit so I guess 235/45R18s may be the way to go. Gotta be the right 18" wheel though apparently some have trouble clearing the brakes.

Well after 4.5 years and 76k miles my Volt has lost about 1kWh of usable battery capacity.

It generally cuts over to hybrid mode between 13.1 and 13.5kWh used now. When new it was 14.4kWh every time. This is inline with what other Gen2 Volt owners report.

I can also say by experience LRR tires do make a noticable difference. I made the mistake of getting a non-LRR set this last time. On my typical driving routes, my efficiency went from 110MPGe normally, to 90-100. And gas mileage went from mid 40s normally to 35-38. Interstate speed driving was the most negatively affected. With the non-LLR tires I am lucky to see better than 85MPGe or 35mpg when going 70mph+. (Note: the above picture is an exception, there was a lot of low speed backroad and city driving in those figures.)

Hey that's some really cool information

How do you usually drive your Volt? do you generally drain the battery top to bottom in one day during your commute, then can you the rest of the way on gas? Does the battery cover the entirety of your commute?

My daily driving is only 16 miles. Which the battery covers fully. I actually don't go onto gas a lot, most of my trips are covered entirely on the battery. If I do go into gas its only for 30-40 miles. I've put gas in it 3 times since Janurary.

Before the giant pile of poo poo that is OnStar lost all charging statistics, I was at 77% electric lifetime miles.

Edit: OnStar really is a giant pile of poo poo.. The app no longer has charging stats, battery level, ability to change charging settings, etc... Many other Volt and Bolt owners report the same problem. I can send commands to the car and they work, but OnStar says they didn't work. Vehicle locate no longer works. I get the charge complete notifications, so its working somewhat. And they actually want people to pay for this? The cheapest plan is like $24.95, LOL.

I have a 50 or 55 mile commute and when I take the highway, I just go into 'Hold' mode on the highway on the way home so that I have just enough electric charge to get me from the exit ramp to home.

When I take surface streets to work, I just leave it in electric. In the summer with no A/C my estimated range is about 70 miles on a full charge.

Ohhh, so that's probably why my car started always charging ASAP, even though I tell it to only charge overnight and be done 15min before I go to work.

I gave up car shopping for now since everything is basically 9 months or more out (i4 M50 is Q1 at best now), if you can even get info (looking at you EV6 GT). Ended up reserving a Rivian last week because if I'm going to wait then it might as well be for something wild plus I don't trust locking in that far in advance with a dealership.

My normal commute is 6.5 miles of mostly flat and straight 2 lane highway that everyone goes a minimum of 60 on. So not the most efficient driving. I also have a heavy foot. The non-LRR tires still put a noticeable dent in efficiency though. I likely have about 10k left on this set and i'll be looking at getting LRR tires this time around.

As for charging settings. If I change the settings on the car itself, it will follow the schedule and work. But the settings are no longer even available inside the OnStar app to change. All of the EV specific stuff disappeared out of the OnStar app months ago for many people and a more than a year for some. Even if you have a paid OnStar account. Their customer support is useless.. they tell you either they are working on it, or that the app never had those features.

I'm still hung up on that Mach-E frunk food. Would there be a way to convert the entire frunk into an air fryer? Or maybe half is an air fryer, and the other half is for tossing buffalo sauce onto the wings. Various dips could be attached to the underside of the frunk lid. This is very important.

305 wh/mi here on a model Y-P over 2500 miles since feb, northeast. Much of it on the highway in winter. The EPA method must be at like 50mph, which makes sense because the government is full of old men who have learned nothing since they graduated were allowed to finish high school.

One thing about EVs in is you become really aware of what affects vehicle efficiency in general. Wind? Uphill? Rain? Go fast? gently caress you.

Yep. Look at my return trip from Idyllwild (6000 ft.) to Carlsbad (close to sea level):

On the way up the Niro did manage 3.1 miles/kw.

Oh I charged along the way back at a Chargepoint fast charger at some casino along the way (there are literally no usable chargers in Idyllwild except for some Tesla Level 2 stuff). I had my max set to 90% and when we decided leave at 82% we discovered that the STOP touchsceen button on the charger was non-functional.

Solution? Change the Kia's max charge setting to 80% so we could disconnect.

Unreadable or non-functional charging station screens seem to happen in desert conditions quite often.

Well don't you know I'm caught in a trap?

Non-functioning touch screens are also common in the rainy PNW.

Maybe design them with a weatherproof enclosure and stop putting the drat screens where they're exposed to the weather. Or cover them with a roof like a gas station.

There are a lot of sacrifices made to make chargers look cool and futuristic, and it bugs the poo poo out of me because they look like/are broken trash after a year of exposure to the elements.

Tesla gave us a free j1772 to tesla adapter with every car. Keep in mind, tesla level 2 chargers are like 5x more common than j1772s in the US - it follows that the tesla->j1772 adapter is 5x more useful, get one. We will 100% use your j1772 if the tesla plugs are full, the reverse is only fair.

Some of the destination chargers, at least here in Europe, only work if they read a Tesla ID. Hotels might have one Tesla-only and another free for all. Not sure if it's the same in the US, just something to find out before planning a charge on one of them

I'm driving my Niro 230 miles into the Scottish Highlands and back this weekend and it'll be the first time I've done any serious public charging. There's nothing at all at my destination, or really for the last 60 miles, but I should be able to fill up at home (5p/kwh) then again after about 130 miles, and somewhere similar on the way back. I'm time-constrained enough on the way North that it's tempting to use the Tesla superchargers in Aviemore because there are a decent number of them and they're almost guaranteed to work but they want an absolutely eyewatering 60p/kwh which even with the Niro getting about 3.8 miles/kwh and the crazy price of petrol is well over half what it'd cost to drive my stupid thirsty Skoda petrol estate instead and just not worry about fuel.

I know the economies of public chargers are different but there's no way anyone would consider using a petrol station that charged literally 4x the amount of another one 5 miles up the road no matter how good the service was.

edit: If I'd bought the diesel Superb estate it would be cheaper per mile than filling up a Niro at a Tesla supercharger.

I thought tesla showing it in wh/mi was a stupid move, but kwh/100km is somehow even more obnoxious. Miles or km per kwh seems like it'd be the intuitive way of showing this but apparently EV manufacturers disagree.

For the sake of comparison, this works out to 348 wh/mi.
