OK, wait. So the Pistons traded Grant yesterday for a lovely 2025 "first-rounder", a 2026 second-rounder, and swapping second-rounders in 2022 and 2026. Grant's contract had one year left at $21 million, all of which Portland took on. I definitely did not want Detroit to extend Grant, so I was hoping for more draft compensation but the cap space was nice. Today, the Kings predictably implode and the Pistons get Jaden Ivey to pair with Cade in the backcourt. Then, the Pistons trade the lovely 2025 "first-rounder" and possibly an unknown number of second-rounders to get Jalen Duren, likely a center but possibly a forward. In the process, they have to take on Kemba Walker, but he also only has one year left on his contract and his cap hit is only $9 million; also, the Pistons might buy out his contract and make him a free agent, so that would suggest a smaller cap hit. So, in exchange for the last year of Grant and possibly one or more second-rounders, Weaver effectively managed to land the center he wanted and cut at least $12 million from the salary cap. ...Could we still be going for Ayton? It feels like the moment has passed to take on Hayward, and I think we'll still have enough cap space to offer him a max.
