Always remember that sea walls are utterly useless. https://www.technologyreview.com/2021/12/13/1041309/climate-change-rising-groundwater-flooding/ quote:Unlike rising seas, where the dangers are obvious, groundwater rise has remained under the radar. Hydrologists are aware of the problem and it’s all over the scholarly research, but it has yet to surface in a significant way outside of those bubbles. Groundwater rise is only briefly mentioned in the most recent edition of the National Climate Assessment, released in 2018; it’s absent from many state and regional climate adaptation plans, and even from flood maps.

The amount of times we almost obliterated civilization is really distressing when you remember that we only survived because of the courageous actions of someone in the right place at the right time or dumb luck, and how we're only loading the dice to make the next lucky roll less and less likely as time goes on

lollontee posted:russia is the largest producer of fertilizers on earth And? Ok let me amend my statement. You can't take the thawed out bog and rocky shield formations, then haul in several billion tons of fertilizer , and call it farmland. The thawed permafrost is useless. It may be decades before you can drive a tractor on it, nevermind lay down roads and rails to haul in a billion tons of fertilizer. It took millions of years of natural processes to lay down the super fertile conditions you find in places like the American Midwest, The Mississippi Delta, and the Ukraine/Russian breadbaskets. They idea that those zones will just shift north with rising temps is shockingly ignorant. Just a complete lack of any knowledge of what is involved in farming or what farming even is. What about soil composition? What about rainfall? What about solar intensity and planting seasons? When, if ever, does the ground dry enough to get a tractor in the field? Now don't get me wrong. The Russians will farm Siberia because they'll have no choice. It will be hideously expensive and per acre yields will be a fraction of what it is now. While some people will survive the country as its currently organized does not survive a halving or worse of its ability to produce food.

I'm looking at them right now and getting upset.

homo-sapiens has a non-zero chance of continuing on in some way. homo-economicus/collosus is already functionally extinct. is how I'm rolling with it at least. the exact timing of the collapse of the world system matters hugely. tomorrow? fantastic for future biosphere outcomes. but if 50 years from now it's still limping along in turbo-fascist mode while we breach +3c then loving lol.
