I wonder if Chernobyl will happen on the Soviet flight and that'll be the kicker this season.

I love the idea that all the conditions necessary to make Chernobyl happen in a power station on the ground will be present on an interplanetary spacecraft, just because of its inherent Sovietness Like they'll shut off the power from the attached diesel engines to perform a reactor spindown test while most of the crew is in cryo-sleep

Mustache Ride posted:I wonder if Chernobyl will happen on the Soviet flight and that'll be the kicker this season. I believe the implication is that working on the space nuclear engines solved Three Mile Island ahead of time for the Americans and probably did the same for the Soviets wrt Chernobyl. We're a decade past where it happened in history and so far the alternate USSR has sidestepped all of the major reasons given for the collapse, like pulling out of Afghanistan.

SimonChris posted:The KGB just needs Margo to believe that they are crazy enough to kill Sergei, so acting like unhinged cartoon villains is actually a completely rational strategy. Yeah that was my take on it. Margo has single-handedly saved them millions and years of R&D, and helped them to keep pace with the US. They must have dozens of agents around NASA befriending and monitoring the top talent. They would know what books and movies Margo enjoys, and her idea of the KGB was probably shaped by spy films. So if she expects a KGB goon to throttle her friend they would be fine with matching that stereotype if they expected it would keep the info coming. The real KGB was talented at managing spies, they figured out that FBI turncoat Robert Hanssen was lonely so made sure his contact took the time to chat and be friendly with him.

Wayne will turn out to be stowed away on the Helios ship. Getting to Mars has always been his secret goal and he left Molly when it became apparent that NASA wasn't going to be the best way to get there. During the big confrontation between Ed and Danny he will crawl out of a Jeffries Tube and talk sense into both of them, thus saving the mission.

For what it's worth, I don't see how Danny and Kelly both don't survive, just in terms of keeping future astronauts around. I'm surprised that Aleida hasn't found her way on to the ship but I guess they need to keep part of the next generation on earth to replace Margo et al. The absolute worst time limeline is Danny and Kelly hooking up. God I hope that doesn't happen. If the Soviets need some sort of rescue 100% they'll have a new young up and coming astronaut involved as well.

looking at the promo art I do think there's gonna be a multi staged issue that fucks each of the missions and requires three way cooperation leading to some kind of breakthru... i think a lot of other shows would go very negative for drama (and I bet the middle of this season is gonna be messy as poo poo) but it's proved to be pretty optimistic so I'm hoping for the best (not getting this from star trek these days for fuckin sure)

I like where this season is going but the show is in desperate need of new blood. Particularly if they continue to lean into the 'Danny is a weirdo sexually obsessed with the late-middle-aged mother of his best friend who died 20 years ago' plotline.

When Ed is not on screen, all the characters should be asking, "Where's Ed?"

Oh, and the Soviet defector from last season, so that's 3.
