Not the first time he's been in a sex scandal if the Graun is to be believed:

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/jun/30/tory-deputy-chief-whip-resigns-after-embarrassing-myself-and-others

quote:

...

The MP for Tamworth previously stood down from the whips’ office in 2017 after he was reported by the Mail on Sunday as making an unwanted pass at the former Olympic rower and Conservative activist Alex Story. The alleged incident reportedly took place with Pincher dressed in a bathrobe at his London home.

He was later cleared in a Conservative party investigation. At the time, a party spokesman said: “Following an investigation, a panel headed by an independent QC considered the evidence and has concluded there has not been a breach of the code of conduct.”

There was disquiet among some Tory MPs that Pincher had resigned rather than been sacked, and been allowed to keep the Conservative whip. “That’s not going to last,” one MP predicted.

Another said Pincher had only been given his role because of his loyalty helping run Johnson’s “shadow whipping operation” in the spring to shore up support.

etc

Strike chat:

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/jun/30/uks-biggest-recruiters-warn-against-hiring-agency-staff-to-replace-strikers

quote:

....

In a letter to Kwasi Kwarteng, the bosses of 13 companies including Hays, Adecco, Randstad and Manpower called on the business secretary to reconsider plans to repeal a decades-long ban on using agency workers to cover for picketing staff.

“We can only see these proposals inflaming strikes – not ending them,” the 13 groups warned in their letter, which was sent by Sarah Thewlis, chair of the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC).

The company executives said they felt “compelled” to write to the business secretary as the leaders of the largest staffing businesses in the UK to express their “concern” at how the government was moving ahead with the proposals, which they described as “unhelpful”.

Faced with strikes by thousands of rail workers and staff in other industries over pay offers well below the 9.1% inflation rate at a time of soaring living costs, the government this week put forward draft legislation.

It would remove the restriction under regulation 7 of the 2003 conduct regulations “preventing employment businesses from introducing or supplying agency workers to hirers to replace individuals taking part in official strike or official industrial action”.

The prohibition to apply agency staff during a strike was first introduced in 1976 under the Labour government. The rules are separately enacted in Wales and the UK government intends to repeal them against the wishes of the Welsh Labour government.

The staffing agencies said in the letter: “We strongly believe it has the potential to cost our businesses – as we will be held responsible for sending strike breakers across a picket line and putting our workers in harm’s way. It will not matter if our individual businesses choose not to supply – the industry will be called into disrepute.

etc.

When your proposal to use agency workers as strike breakers is too lovely even for agencies themselves.

I worked for Manpower back in the 80s as a temp secretary and we had a handbook which prohibited strike breaking / crossing picket lines.
(And it also prohibited us using chairs to get things on /off high shelves which annoyed the boss sometimes!)

Right. You know how its really easy to lift things underwater because I dunno the natural buoyancy of water. We should flood all warehouses, keep them like aquariums and have either scuba divers or, more realistically, mini robot subs stack/sort/pick the products and deliver them to output chutes into waiting delivery vehicles.

There's a particular concern for agencies who would be sending staff into safety-critical roles on the railway, which is Section 34 Offences Against the Person Act 1861:

quote:

Doing or omitting anything to endanger passengers by railway.

Whosoever, by any unlawful act, or by any wilful omission or neglect, shall endanger or cause to be endangered the safety of any person conveyed or being in or upon a railway, or shall aid or assist therein, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and being convicted thereof shall be liable, at the discretion of the court, to be imprisoned for any term not exceeding two years.

There was a very weird prosecution a few years ago of a Merseyrail guard who had done nothing particularly unreasonable and had an old woman fall down the side of his train after trying to get on when the doors were closing; but I can see how the CPS might have thought there was a reasonable prospect of conviction based on how broadly the offence is written. If something like that happened with an untrained agency worker, a lot of eyes would be on the agency. Someone dies, and that could easily end in corporate manslaughter.

Yeah, it's pretty much been admitted that they would only be able to replace the cleaners and folks who push the refreshements carts up and down - the key personel like points operators or anyone who needs any real training will not be replaceable.

So there would be plenty of food on that train thats not moving anywhere.

This is 21st century Britain, they might have refreshment carts but expecting there to be food on it is rather optimistic

Interesting to see it quantified like that though, I think it's actually worse in Ireland. Every day I don't have a child is another win. Got my kids in the local outstanding nursery for 3 days a week and even with the 30 hours free it costs between £1500 and £1700 a month.

This is about the same as my mortgage on my 3 bedroom flat.
