Sorry, can’t hear you over the active sonar.

Those things in close proximity to a pulse can cause physical damage too, as it’s essentially a shockwave in the water

Can't remember, was it the OG Cosmos that had a segment about how whales used to be able to communicate over extreme ranges until the age of sail ended, and we've basically been ceaselessly harassing the gently caress out of them since?

Whale: OoooOooOooooOo?!
Humanity: Haha ship goes brrr

we started TNG with our kid recently and you know

the first episode of that show has the year 2075 as a post nuclear wasteland populated by dirty idiots patrolled by drug addicted thugs with machine guns. that is canon

2075 seemed further off in 1989 than it does in 2022 :rubby:

that was the best liberals could dream of, even in 1989: that nuclear fire would burn that carcass of the old world but leave enough people and knowledge to somehow build space socialism in 300 years

quote:

Good morning. I'm A Martinez.

Ever been to a club or a loud party with friends? You wind up leaning in and screaming at each other just to be heard. Researchers say that's what it's like all the time underwater now, thanks to human-made noise pollution. Whales, seals, porpoises and other marine mammals need their keen hearing for communication and also for finding food. But it's being damaged by a wide range of constant, loud sound. So the next time you're in the ocean, make good choices and (whispering) use low-pitched voices.

It's MORNING EDITION.

it's really a small thing compared to the unfathomable death and suffering we cause, but i live next to a park full of frogs and birds and insects and other small animals. the last few years, there have been music festivals two-three times a year, and when I think about what that must be like for them, it makes me loving seethe right through my all-but-utterly-disassociated academic brain.
