Most of what people like about Rogue One are the Vader scenes, which admittedly are cool but the rest of the movie is pretty forgettable and dull. Rogue One is good at recreating the ANH "aesthetic", though.

I felt like The Last Jedi was two completely different movies that had been edited together. I kind of liked the movie with Rey and Luke and Kylo Ren, but for some reason they kept cutting back to the other movie, the stupid one, with Finn and Poe and the casino planet.

The final Vader scene is definitely the cherry on top of Rogue One, but the movie has its own merits. Yeah, the first half drags a little, and the only really memorable character is Alan Tudyk as the droid. But once they go to steal the plans from the tropical atoll, the whole "WW2 commando squad in space" thing is plenty fun enough to carry the rest of the movie.

Oh yeah, I always forget about the casino planet. But it felt fitting enough in a Star Wars movie to have an extended silly scene with adorable droid slapstick.

I will say that Rogue One is probably the best and most successful at what it's trying to do ST movies. The others seem to suffer from 'written by suits in committee' syndrome to sell more toys, but RO sticks to a single set piece - "right before the events of ANH" - and pretty much nails it.

To elaborate on what I meant, Josef Bugman, here’s the blurb for Her Majesty’s Royal Coven

quote:

At the dawn of their adolescence, on the eve of the summer solstice, four young girls–Helena, Leonie, Niamh and Elle–took the oath to join Her Majesty’s Royal Coven, established by Queen Elizabeth I as a covert government department. Now, decades later, the witch community is still reeling from a civil war and Helena is the reigning High Priestess of the organization. Yet Helena is the only one of her friend group still enmeshed in the stale bureaucracy of HMRC. Elle is trying to pretend she’s a normal housewife, and Niamh has become a country vet, using her powers to heal sick animals. In what Helena perceives as the deepest betrayal, Leonie has defected to start her own more inclusive and intersectional coven, Diaspora. And now Helena has a bigger problem. A young warlock of extraordinary capabilities has been captured by authorities and seems to threaten the very existence of HMRC. With conflicting beliefs over the best course of action, the four friends must decide where their loyalties lie: with preserving tradition, or doing what is right.

Why would a witch during Elizabethan times know the word “intersectional”? Why would a witch from then care about intersectionality?

I haven't read the book, but it sounds like it's set in the modern day? It says HMRC was established by Elizabeth I, not that she's still alive. The "decades later" refers to the decades since the four girls joined HMRC, not since Elizabeth I established it.

I mean we don't have many accounts written by secular authorities or people from that time period, but I suspect there is a reason that "corrupt monk" was such a popular character archetype.

Probably people back then hated the church, they just also had some level of belief in divinity as well.

The fall of Jerusalem happened after the second but before the third crusade. The people there were possible pilgrims but they may not have been crusaders at all.

It's important bear in mind that holiness was not solely something centrally directed from the Church and, in many instances, excessive piety was looked down on if done in the "wrong" way.

What church, cuz it sounds like you're specifically talking about medieval roman catholicism, almost as if your worldview isn't secular at all but entirely coloured by one specific brand of one religion doing things a thousand years ago you happened to grow up with.

Medieval Roman Catholicism is the one I know the most about. However I do think that most faiths will always see people critiquing their structures because they are made up of people.
