Some Guy TT posted:

the main reason i was so pessimistic about bad guys is that despicable me and minions did a lot to pigeonhole badness as an aesthetic rather than an actual moral value so i was genuinely surprised to see bad guys deal seriously with relative ethics

i always liked megamind more than despicable me when those two were the competing versions of the concept because megamind does have a strong ethical component were practically told straightout that megamind is the bad guy because he has blue skin while the superman analog is the good guy because hes the physical embodiment of white supremacy even if theyre both aliens and its only by accepting the inherently arbitrary nature of this conflict that megamind is able to act constructively and even socialistly to improve society

but this is why socialism in mainstream film is a fools errand because even if megamind is the technically superior film to despicable me there just wasnt any way that a story with a coherent self contained arc could compete with nakedly commercialist bullshit like the minions

While I get ya about badness as an aesthetic, the aesthetic of badness is awesome. And that's what the minions are all about

Megamind is also v good yes

Also aren't the Bluth family based on the Bushes? Gob is Jeb.

Gob specifically is a Jeb reference but otherwise they're a more general parody of the great american family, a mish-mash of the bushes and the kennedys and more generally any family that have been the richest people in the same place for several generations and their stupid family bullshit can make the local news

It isn't 1:1. It's mostly just naming conventions (like constantly using the same pool of names with Michael, Oscar, and George), and general detachment from reality. Rampant criminality too, but even there the comparison falls apart because the Bluths tend to get caught, while the Bushes lol

How It's Made shows you how things are made. Unwrapped shows you long segments of commercials with short commercial breaks inbetween, and the longer commercials show you about one- to two-thirds of the process in how things are made. I love the How It's Actually Made series on Youtube, but the Fully Unwrapped series may be doing more good in exposing just how much bullshit Unwrapped was.

Literally one of the best living English-language writers is making a Star Trek show that’s terrible, so it seems to be impossible.

its ok. not aggressively bad like Discovery and Picard. guy playing Pike is cool.

also a return to one-shot episodes instead of one gigantic convoluted mess of a plot

I think a good compromise between VotW and One Plot is to have 10 2-parters. but since networks don’t want to pay to produce 18-24 episodes a season anymore you kinda have to pick one or the other

We had been thinking of dropping Hulu and picking up paramount+.

SNW feels like a 21st century take on the original show. outside of ongoing character development it’s episodic weekly adventures telling moral tales with a pretty strong cast

while there’s been nothing particularly memorable yet about it, it’s not great, SNW is simply a better crafted show than discovery with none of the embarrassing garbage

Evil is very good, and I like The Good Fight. They're both, in the thread's terms, "catnip for liberals", but they're funny and weird. It's interesting to see the people behind The Good Fight become more and more left as they go along (though not, you know, considerably so).

But yeah, Evil is my recommendation -- it's kind of like the way people talk about Strange New Worlds, in the sense that the show is made up of a bunch of standalones tied to an evolving plot and character development, though IMO unlike SNW it's actually quite good. The lead's a loving smokeshow, and the cast is great. It's popcorn, but it's the good stuff.
