A cryptocurrency lender backed by Peter Thiel and Coinbase Global Inc COIN 4.30%▲. suspended withdrawals, trading and deposits on its platform, citing volatile market conditions and financial difficulties facing key business partners.

The platform, Vauld, said Monday that it froze the operations after users pulled almost $200 million over the last three weeks. A sharp decline in cryptocurrency prices that began with the collapse of two cryptocurrencies in May has spooked traders and caused knock-on effects in the digital asset world.

if for some reason you hold cryptocurrency and don't want to sell it then it should be held in offline wallets as every exchange can potentially just tell you to gently caress off and steal your money from you

Binance /Bitfinex and most of the other big ones have halted withdrawals before. Coinbase has periods of instability that keeps people from doing anything for hours.

This was what I was getting at. An experienced programmer could pick up a game engine and start building out game systems within a few days, but all the skilled programming and artistry in the world won't make a terrible idea fun.

Conversely, there's been a number of 'bashed out in a few days using stock assets' games that have been very well received because the underlying ideas are novel, well executed or just generate loads of dopamine when number go up.

Being an ideas guy gets a bad rap because all the worst ideas guys never stop to reflect on whether their ideas are needed or good (or even executable). Which is really how we ended up with bitcoin nerds turning a proof of concept into a staggering financial hazard in the first place so I guess QED?

Ed: If it makes you feel better, you can rebrand 'ideas guy' as "Games Designer" or "Senior Systems Lead" or something like that.

Reading the comments over on Reddit about people’s crypto.com visas (that now include a 1% fee to add money to them, on top of normal fees) not working over the weekend with customer support saying they won’t be back at until the 6th.

Some folks contacted support and had new cards issued in an attempt to fix the problem except the new cards didn’t carry over their existing balances, leaving them with zero money over the long US holiday weekend.

For added hilarity, a lot of users are reporting that their cards are not just failing to be authorized, but being flagged for fraud, which … lol. lmao

Crypto Crash Halts Plans by Statehouses to Accept Bitcoin Tax Payments

While a half-dozen states have considered following the lead of Colorado and Utah, a chorus of fiscal watchdogs, academics and crypto skeptics is now warning lawmakers against initiatives that might put state treasuries and taxpayers at risk.

“Anything involving crypto is less appealing in the wake of the massive volatility we’ve seen over the last month, and frankly the last six months,” said Lee Reiners, executive director of Duke University’s Global Financial Markets Center. “I don’t know if that slows momentum at the state level for payment of taxes, but it doesn’t help. And there is no financial benefit to the states to permit it.”

if its inflating at a steady rate, even if those %s are huge, it is not volatile. sharp direction changes are markers of rising volatility (volatility is usually mathematically defined using standard deviation)

Like Utah, Colorado plans to use a third party to immediately convert cryptocurrency payments into US dollars.

“We are working to make it similar to how we accept credit cards and other forms of payment,” Tanis said. “The state does not intend to hold a balance of cryptocurrency.”

I feel like blood is leaking out of my ears at the thought of state tax collection agencies suddenly jumping through hoops to accommodate people for the sake of crypto. Gonna petition the state to accept my old boxes of Magic cards as payment.
