i agree that it's very uncomfortable, i just think the intentions of the creators were a bit more basic than the nuanced reading you're taking from it here.

i wish it was like you're saying but in the context of the show, i just can't agree.

So you are saying it should be uncomfortable, it was uncomfortable, but you don't believe that was intentional and therefore it was bad?

What’s with people acting like The Deep is some sort of Gimli level comic relief character? He has plenty of funny moments and tends to get ragged on a bunch but I think ‘this scene can’t possibly be non-comedic cos it features Professional Clown and Laugh Machine The Deep’ is a very strange take.

Yeah to say that everything involving the deep is “supposed” to be hilarious is a bit much. Tragicomic maybe. The Timothy scene I think most people cringe in horror rather than laugh. He is “a joke” in the sense that he’s brought low all the time but that’s not the same as being a comic relief.

Martman posted:

I dunno. It'll be worth considering on a rewatch. I think the show is about trauma at its core in many ways, and I think there is actually some value in emphasizing that trauma can have a meaningless quality to it. Like, you say the scene is the show being cruel, but I think the show is about characters being subjected to (and often propagating) a cruel world; the frustration of not being able to derive some character arc purpose out of traumatic and violent events is interesting to me.

I agree with this too, if there was a turnaround of “now I have been raped, I understand my actions and repent” that would have been very trite, like he just needed a taste of his own medicine to set him straight or something. Instead it’s just pointless and cruel within the narrative, but portraying the pointlessness of cruelty has its own merits.

how is saying that it's not played for laughs trivializing it? we have already had this discussion and most people agree that the scene is constructed to make you very uncomfortable

it's not meant to be funny, it's meant to make you think they're going for the lovely "haha the rapist is getting raped thing" but then it's played for the actual uncomfortable horror of being sexually assaulted

it's a scene about how rape is horrifying and never ok, even when a beautiful woman is doing it to a rapist

the scene works as a refutation of both the "hey I wouldn't mind being raped by her" and the "haha it's good that rapists get raped in prison" terrible attitudes that are much too common among people and media

go watch the scene, I revisited it during the last discussion of this scene and it's incredibly uncomfortable

This was my takeaway from it on first watch and a recent rewatch.

I'm gonna get flak for this view:

I think any subject, as horrible as it is, can be laughed at and made fun of.

Whether it was played just for laugh, or with a deep hidden meaning, the scene is good.

Some of you are way too sensitive for this show and dark humour may not be for some of you.

Ehhh I don't disagree but there's a difference between "can" and "should". Make comedy about whatever sick poo poo you want but there's a good chance it won't be good or funny, especially if you're not speaking from experience. Most comedians who take this approach spend their whole career punching down at vulnerable people.

That said I don't mind that the serial rapist got raped in the show.

Yeah but "lol look at the rapist getting raped" is gross. "this rapist got raped, but is too self centered and awful to understand and gain sympathy from it" is edgy as hell, but there's something you can at least attempt to defend there.

Best line of the episode was The Deep angrily retorting "So then why did Dave Eggers say I had 'a formidable intelligence'?!" which is one of those references which will age terribly, but it's such a wonderfully super-specific burn on Dave Eggers and book-blurb culture thrown in out of nowhere.

look at the scenes around it and the way the deep is portrayed across the show. this is a really dumb take and your pushing for trivialization of this sort of thing is shocking.

e: also, just to get it all out there - what exactly are you implying about "[my] perceptions" exactly? be specific.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86K6PdeFr9A

Hello, roomtone and Lady Radia. Can you please do me a favour and rewatch the scene for me, please. I have linked a dog poo poo version of the scene on Youtube but you can get the idea and I'm sure you can both go on amazon prime and watch the scene in better quality.

I don't really understand how you can watch that and think they are going for comedy rather than trying to make you incredibly uncomfortable. I can see how you might interpret the role reversal, with the assaulter being a woman but saying traditionally male things as funny. Now, I wouldn't say that it is slapstick high hilarity to watch a gruesome assault

I do fail to see how I am the one trivialising sexual assault when you are the one laughing at it though, and I don't appreciate being accused of it. That makes gently caress all sense to me and is an incredibly unhinged thing to say.

"yes, the scene IS deeply uncomfortable, but my dispute here is that it really doesn't seem to be, especially in context with the surrounding scenes and the character involved. i would like the scene to work as the refutation you describe, but that isn't how it comes off - it just comes off as unintentionally deeply, deeply horrifying." :iiam:

Think you might need some help wording your posts (this agrees with me).

If you see something suspicious, bomb it!

No but you see if you imagine the benny hill theme over it then clearly the filmmakers intended it to be comedy. But since we all agree that it isn't funny, they obviously failed.

The Deep's story needs to be viewed in parallel with A-Train's, and that parallel is at points made explicit by their reunion briefly within the Church of the Collective.

Both committed a transgressional act, but A-Train had it covered up even though his was objectively more serious.

Both had to work through self criticism to try to become better people.

Both got their hands on blackmail material to destroy one of their abusers, but where A-Train pulled the trigger Deep meekly gave it up and then went back to being abused.

Both got booted from the Seven, but worked their way back in very different ways.

A-Train's story is objectively superior though and he sucks up a lot of Deep's air.

I feel like a lot of people are conflating the idea of a scene containing jokes and a scene being funny. I don't think anyone who's claimed that the scene has humorous construction has said they've actually found it funny -- in fact, I think everyone who's claimed the former has said the opposite.

So all this "you're telling on yourself" stuff just isn't true, and it's the worst kind of lovely internet argument.

Look, if I'm wrong, maybe I've missed it, someone quote the post. But I don't think that's the case that anyone actually found the scene funny at all. Just that they noticed it contained jokes.

HA! HA! NICE! WHAT A TOOL!
The scene set up deep's arc for the next few episodes where he gets high and his patton oswalt gills talk to him and he joins a cult. The implication is that this kind of thing happens a lot, like he knew where it was going when she makes him take the vest off. It's a fairly important narrative scene for a lot of reasons, and I don't think it's taken lightly, and it hints at a lot of stuff like supes feeling exploited by normal humans for being freaks, why deep likes his uncomplicated fish friends so much, how the fame that Vought manufactures can turn out, etc. Most of his scenes are comedy but that one really tells you the most about why he is the way he is.

Again, the way it's portrayed this kind of thing has happened to him before so I don't think it's some kind of random bad thing happening to bad person.

I may be insanely beaten but he DID actually briefly get the ability to walk when he lost his powers. After the Starjammers cloned his body and put his consciousness inside it due to his original body being impregnated by the Brood, he had a completely functional body AND powers. Eventually the new legs got crushed again and at one point he was shot with an assassin's bullet that nearly killed him. While he was recovering, he had no powers and it turns out he could walk without them, because they were psychosomatically preventing him from walking.
