Mmmm. Negligence of safety is a real motherfucker. Especially if they live in a state with strict laws around fireworks.

I look at the neighborhood in the background there and I think, yeah, they can afford to pay higher insurance premiums for being morons while also not being paid out for repairs to their property because they neglected to take any safety precautions, possibly illegal fireworks, leaving that child next to a literal pile of explosives even briefly, probably alcohol involved, etc.

It's one thing if a fire from like, a neighboring property or a wild fire of some variety catches your poo poo on fire. You have no control over that. If you cause the fire, then lol, accept the responsibility and don't post pictures for your insurer to find on the interwebs proving your stupidity to increase your premiums.

E: part of me really wants to agree with you, but a bigger part really just wants dumb people on that scale to pay for their own stupidity. I'm dumb too, but I'm not set cars on fire with a pile of fireworks dumb.

This. gently caress being able to deny claims. They’re no better than a casino because the house always wins and they get to make sure it happens. gently caress them.

I started a claim on my roof 5 years ago. The deductible was $500 less than the cost of the roof so I just paid out of pocket. Guess what still shows up as a claim as I’m looking for homeowners insurance now? Luckily it’s just outside of the mattering timeline.

Yes, I think *at worst* an insurance company should be able to set your initial rate higher if you have documented cases of claims due to negligence. None of this corporate bullshit of taking your money and penalizing you for life for any claims you ever do use, let alone the authority to deny claims.

Roofs are a bit different because age is a big factor. Older the roof, the less they pay out, but a year old one would be bought out in whole.

Put a metal roof on and watch your rate drop. Cheaper to replace, longer warranties, higher general durability outside of hail, but noisy as gently caress in the driving rain.

I mean, I kinda equate this level of stupidity to drunk driving. An insurer isn't going to cover your rear end if you DUI your car into a pole at 0.2 on the breathalyzer. If you're operating outside the boundaries of what is expected of you, that's on your rear end, and they'll gladly get a judgement against you after paying out everyone else first.

E: maybe make negligence claims similar to credit, where it falls off after 7 years of not accidentally burning your home to the ground or flooding the subdivision because you didn't call to have lines marked first. Part of learning is making mistakes, sometimes people have to learn by paying for their previous drunk or irresponsible fuckups.

While I agree with you in cases of stupid is as stupid does, or gently caress around and find out (lets watch the fireworks from 5 feet away instead of 50???) the problem is:
