In regards to acquiring a shotgun, it's leaving out a whole pile of details. While it is possible to get a shotgun, the licensing requirements are immense and difficult with periodic renewal requirements and are specifically only allowed for hunting/conservation or skeet shooting. Not sure about sawed off, but that person is also working with old news (they're not a journalism outlet, just bloggers afaict). Here is video of Abe being loaded out of a medevac helicopter. I am not a medical professional, but it looks like they may be using one of the fancy machines used in ambulances for what may be CPR, you can see his chest moving up and down pretty far. (The machine is a little robot strapped over a patient on top of a gurney that does compressions.)
