If any of you haven't read Grace Paley you should. She makes total sense as an Allison touchstone.

Time for Lottie to move on. For Claire, we must imagine this is a feeling of relief, tinged with regret, garnished with stray long black hairs. Overall, it’s probably for the best. Don’t worry, it will take more than the distance between Broomhill and Woodseats to rend this partnership in twain.

other than moving out of her parents, which she arguably could not afford, all of lotties choices and influences have been straight downgrades lol. glenn is terrible at his job.

at the start of this arc:

lottie was in full time employment at what appeared to be a lovely coffee shop, being offered a management position presumably for decent money. she was living with her parents (perhaps improving her salary would have helped there?) and a little listless, but the primary problem her mother had was that she was too engaged at her current position. kids her age wind up living with their folks an awful length of time now, it is what it is.

now, she's at an entry level position that she is explicitly overqualified for and she's being underpaid for. she's moved away from her stable living situation so, isolating herself in another town she can shack up with an older man she's met like four times, in a home that is explicitly violent and unpleasant before glenn comes into the picture.

claire is even worse! she starts at one of the most prestigious universities on the planet, loving impossible to get into and iirc she had some kind of ride or scholarship? she's not enjoying her major and is having second thoughts, boy it's every undergraduate ever. she has gotten over her childhood speech impediment and despite the fact she feels like she's surrounded by future hedge fund managers etc - you can do whatever the gently caress you want with a degree from LSE. i know a dude who is very high up in local government - it's like a fuckin harvard degree you can probably use that social capital to go more or less anywhere you want that doesn't require a specialist degree. she's experiencing some mild existential angst, hey being 19 is fun, but she's skyrocketing up in the world. two more years of pantsuits and the world would be her oyster.

now, she's transferred to a much much worse program - fine whatever we need sociologists in this world i won't give her too much poo poo for this, we all figure stuff out even though her parents reacting badly were pretty objectively correct. her speech impediment is back, in fact she seems to have massively regressed following lottie reentering her life and glenn's intervention. she went from complete adult independence, if slightly unhappy, to this loving mess in a month:

on one hand, true, you have my fullest agreement, &c.,

on the other: Allison already did the whole "crowd of undergraduates managing to graduate: some to high-flying careers, some to middling comfort, etc." comic, though. That was Giant Days

now he's back to the happy treadmill of self-destructive personifications of chaos (and foil), so bad decisions are par for the course

It turns out people making good decisions is often a very boring way to start a story
Plus they are exactly at the age to be restless and rash and not appreciate a boring-but-stable job
