The Tories had the first, second and to date only female PMs, they're almost certainly going to have the first BAME PM too

Right wing people actively stamp down on people who aren't "like them". They have no particular framing for what counts as "like them", they just instinctively know and often race or skin colour is as important as anything else.

Plus (as mentioned) the unparalleled joy of being able to say "First woman PM, first BAME PM...Party of Equal Opportunity" to the lefties, which a non-zero percentage of the Tory party membership will hold their blatant racism in check to achieve, and a bigger portion will blunt their more unconscious prejudices with 'one of the good ones' and 'this brown-skinned man says racism doesn't exist...he talks common sense' thoughts. The worst thing is that they have a point about that first bit - Labour has a pretty shocking record of promoting and voting women and BAME members to the upper levels, let alone as leaders or potential/actual PMs (all besuited white men). And the ones that do get to the higher levels seem to get treated especially shittily, on a spectrum from outright abuse to the 'Blair's Babes' patronising girlboss stuff.

Cimber posted:By the way, why do conservatives have the nickname Tories? Does Labour have a nickname, or don't they because their name is already one syllable? The other, non-Tory party was known as the Whigs back when the nicknames were being handed out, which is a good couple of centuries before Labour or socialism had been invented. The Americans had them for a while too (their Tories meanwhile were associated with, well, us, so stopped being very popular around 1776).

He ate a bacon sandwich in a slightly ungainly fashion and was photographed doing it, which was considered a terrible thing because clearly a man who cannot eat a bacon sandwich in a dignified fashion could never be prime minister, I say, in 2022, putting on the clown makeup. Also, I note, he's Jewish, and this is back when antisemitism was considered cool and good by the rightwing press rather than a massive stain upon the Labour party and only the Labour party, so y'know, there was a big ol' wink and nudge there in a 'bacon sandwich' context. Think he also got criticised for having two ovens? Which, again...

There aren't enough Boris loyalists left to get her past the first round, unfortunately. PM Dorries is exactly what this country deserves, IMO. PM Braverman would be almost as funny, though, and she's in with an outside shot since she has the ERG behind her and is sufficiently psychotic to win over the membership.
