Aye, it's just a matter of phrasing it properly.
With your example I, (and by extension at least one of the constestants), could probably get it.

As someone who has been watching NASCAR for over twenty years and worked in the sport for a few, I had no idea what they were trying to go for with the $1,000 clue in that category.

But I did get a good laugh out of the fifth clue in the Boroughs of New York category being a triple-stumper. They had already named four of the boroughs, there was only one left!

I had no idea what they wanted from me on that one. It felt like something I probably knew but no way I was parsing all that to figure it out.

I noted that. She pointlessly "clarified" each of the 4 other clues, but very deliberately avoided that one.

Last night had another few instances of my favorite dumb hosting habit of hers....

"This strait something something"
"What is Gibraltar?"
"Yes....the Straight of Gibraltar."

That alone should be enough to disqualify her from hosting, as it clearly demonstrates she has no loving clue what actually makes for a good game for the audience (let alone coupled with constantly commenting on changing of position or speaking like a kindergarten teacher to adults).

I didn't mind it in this category, tbh: it's essentially asking you to come up with two answers and only say one of them, so clarifying the other answer as well actually does help the audience figure out how the contestant got there, even if it's pretty obvious.

Chipping in with "Yes, George Washington" or whatever drives me up the loving wall though, my working theory is that she only does this when she doesn't know the answer herself

I think it's better when they flash the text up over the podiums, like they do for the anagram categories and other stuff like that. That way you have it if you somehow missed it, but it doesn't disrupt the game.

I think it would have been rejected- Genesis 19 is primarily about Sodom, Gomorrah only comes up as part of the phrase "Sodom and Gomorrah"

Cool, thanks. I have virtually no bible knowledge so I was curious. It seemed weird to me that the clue only asked for one city when the two are so intrinsically linked AFAIK.

Yeah, I went with Jericho for the same reason, and I pointed out to Mr Hookshot that if this was two years ago there was no way they would ask for a single city if it was either Sodom OR Gomorrah, but these days who knew and it was probably Sodom.

Hooray for lovely clue writing.

I knew that Jericho was later in the Bible (Joshua, I think?) and Babel was a little bit earlier, so I correctly guessed Sodom.
